      I just wish they didn’t run the extended 125” wheelbase. They just don’t look right.

      @danmyers9372 same. I grew up in the mid 70s and watched the short wheel base cars running all nitro. My first love of drag racing. Cars were so sick, a pass was always pedaled 2-3 times. Every time they hit the throttle cars literally jumped off the ground. Header flames 30' high. Ran the same set up as the fuel cars. Hence the name Fuel Altered. AZ was the mecca for FA. The old Tucson drag way. Ride our bicycles 10 miles out Houghton Rd. Come home covered in rubber with bloodshot eyes.

    How cool are these, so much juice half the drivers get off the pedal quick. Love this event thanks for catching all this for us.

    • @danmyers9372
      @danmyers9372 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The biggest difference is the wheelbase. Modern Altereds run a 125” wheelbase which is the same as funny cars. Top Fuel cars run a 300” wheelbase (14.5’ longer). Back in the 70’s most altered wheelbases were under 110” which is what made them so notoriously squirrelly.

  • @mreckes9967
    @mreckes9967 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    If you look carefully just beneath the drivers seat you can make out the armored box that they rest those huge balls of theirs in. Fuel Altereds sure are a handful.

      Nah, the new cars now run a 125” wheelbase same as funny cars. The lack of downforce from a body does make them a bit more of a handful downtrack. Except the cars with the stupid looking big wangs.

    I Love the "Awful awfuls"! I've been a fan since the 60's. The modern technology and longer wheelbase does seem to make them more "manageable" No doubt they're STILL a Handful!

      People, teams on a budget make the show fun and exciting. The deep pocket guys drive the low buck budget guys out and lobby for rule changes to make changes to change the cars go faster but also increase the cost This is why the best years of nostalgia were the begining years. Nothing wrong with a fuel car then running 6.50 - 7 second times with updated safety requirements but keeping with the 60' 70's look and spirit including the CHOICE to wear a breather mask like many did. Look at a AA/FD from 1990-2005 and now. With the slower times came affordability until the abominations crept in and took over. Now it's big show wannabees that have brought in computers and high tech modern B S......😡

    Once upon a time a man said "Behold, I shall build a fuel car with a 1940's Fiat" The world laughed pointed and snicked at the man..... In his shop, after many months of grueling work, day and night, tormenting, welding, hammering, grinding and fitting, he declared "Behold, "The fuel car design that will live in infamy" The people fell to their knees, looked up to the man and said, "forgive us for doubting your wisdom, we have experienced the miracle" and so the 40's Fiat lives on, having a place in the history of man. @@fastracingandhotrods6891 When we were kids an would go to OCIR and Irwindale the burnouts were half the show. They would absolutely fry the tires and it seemed like they went halfway down the track. If there was no wind the smoke would be so thick the cars had to wait for it to clear before they could back up cus they couldn't see anything.
      I think in this day and age of drifting Nitro burnouts would be a big draw.
      Course thats easy for me to say cus i have absolutely no clue what it takes to run a nitro outfit.

      @@williambarry8015 Definitely would draw in the crowds. The heydays are the era I look up to. It needs to go back to the roots. Although it was on a run I remember Pure Hell a few years ago boiling the tyres and still running over 200mph! What a show that was and later running a 5 second run later. Heads up racing in Fuel Altered would be awesome based on the Late 60s/Early 70s era.
