Oh how I love watching and learning from you!! You’re just amazing and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. I wish to goodness I could successfully get logged in to your web sight. I have tried countless times. I have no idea why it doesn’t work. Thanks again. Patti
I just wanted to say that this is one of the best acrylic tutorials I've seen to date! You are a great teacher. I am really looking forward to the second part to this. Thank you so much!
I paint in oils, and wanted to make pet portraits for my family for Christmas, and this tutorial was incredibly helpful. The best one I’ve come across for myself. You’re an excellent instructor, thank you so much for sharing! Can’t wait to give these presents to them! 💜🙏🏻✨
A wonderful video full of learning information. It is presented with patience, understanding, tidbits of humor and masterful skills in teaching. Thanks so much David!!
Happy Fathers Day!!! (And grandfathers day) 🎉 You know so much about mediums and supplies, since watching you, I love understanding the chemistry of art supplies
Thank you so much! Had a great Fathers and Grandfathers day yesterday. Understanding the chemistry helps, especially if your developing your own techniques. Have a great day!
I would need a couple of coffee after that tutorial. I got a lot out of this. I like how you describe the value of tone up and down to get effect. Keep it coming.
I am so pleased I stopped by your channel. I felt really in tune with you. What you taught me was other colours to use and this was so important to me. The end result was very pleasing to see. I paint my husbands guide dogs and other people’s and I really want to learn more. Thank you.
I'm doing a commissioned portrait right now of an aged yellow lab, so I'm following this Video #1 closely and will look at #2 next. Since I have received two of your Fusion brushes, flats, I have to say that I am using both of those way more than any of my other ones these days. They are wonderful (your commenting on mainly using two brushes made me think of that.)
Once again, you capture my full attention! Bathtub ran over, dinner burned on the stove, missed the laundry cycle....oh boy, but I sure learned a lot. It amazes me how you speak to the camera as if I'm sitting right in front of you and you're talking to me. Sometimes I talk back, don't tell anybody I said that. Haha. What a fantastic lesson. Looking forward to part 2. Thank you!!😃
Coming soon! Actually this morning. It is uploading now. We render these as huge HD media files. Takes 3 hours to upload a video like this to youtube even with our ultra fast connections. You will like part 2. :)
David - thank you so much for sharing your in-depth knowledge and passion for painting - such generosity! I have watched many TH-cam tutorials on painting, but your tutorials are a cut above the others....you are a true teacher! I am inspired by your instruction and painting ability. Love that you describe "the calligraphy of the stroke!" and how you start with basics and keep building upon each stroke and tone with ease. I don't know tones, but from you I am learning. Again - thank you for your generosity of spirit and love of painting!!
Thank you for keeping the reference photo up all the time. Many tutorial video makers could take lessons from you on how to make good ones! I have a retriever commission and this has helped me no end.
Glad it was helpful! I think since we all see things a little different it is nice for the viewer to see what I am looking at. Especially helpful if I decide to alter a tone etc. Thanks so much!
You are a wonderful teacher l explaining the processes in detail. Much appreciate your generosity in sharing with us your technique. Love it. I would keep watching your tutorials. I would like to ask a question: to loosen up the paint, is there any reason why the matte medium is not used instead of water? Thank you.
Watson 😍 🐕 I love that you’re considering your students portfolio and potential customers! Thank you for uploading this tutorial I have two shepherds that I want to paint. But omg knowif my technical skill is quite there yet. Going to practice this 🤞🤞🤞
I would love to see what you do with a beagle harrier. This video tutorial is valuable to me. I learned a lot and had to watch it again and again. Helped me with my painting process that I fined tuned my process to follow yours. It's helped big time.
I tried to make canvas of my friend's dog portrait.... But the fact is I use acrylic 1st time 😂so when I starts that too much bad I feel I can't make it in my entire life.. But when I see your tutorial... Seriously you gave me hope...!! 🤗thank u...!! 😊
Love the blocking in with the fur, He looked great even at that point! ( well minus the eyeballs which you put in later!) Now I have to find the picture I have that looked like the dog my husband had, the coloring is the same! thank you!!
Wow amazeing lesson for an eye for tones...this is so helpful I'm complete beginner and it can look complicated and overwhelming but breaking it down and having fun..I will make a start soon ...thankyou
What a great lesson! Thank you for being so giving and sharing. I love these animal portraits and the comparison of approach between alla prima and premier coup. Love them!
besides being a handsome fun man, what you do makes sense! i so struggled making a very important pet picture for a nice lady. i am going to try your method and see if i can improve it.. takes Dave! how long have you been painting?
Every time I paint an animal, like you did I tend to blend and also dry brushing and I get some good results. I end up getting bored with the process and size doesn't make any difference. Your style of painting looks like fun so maybe I will try it. Are the paints you use heavy body paints?
Hi, no I don't. I normally go right to the painting because that is what most want to see. There are wonderful videos on youtube about sketching. Look up the graph method. It is the best way to start.
What if I want to paint my dog with oils, I don't have acrylics what would be the process and brushes for fur etc. I am not a professional painter I just paint for friends and family
I don't use oils any longer because of health reasons. You would be best to find an oil artist on youtube that you can learn from if you want to use oils. Thank you.
No they are not open. You can make them open with a mixing process with call "global". You can reconstitute them for a couple hours depending on the humidity.
I would love to paint this. I haven’t been able to find the reference photo on the website. Do I have to join a class to get the reference? Again, thank you so much.
Depends on the technique. Water is the solvent for acrylics. I don't use water to keep them wet. I use it as a solvent. You shouldn't use water to keep acrylics wet.
Do you have video's where you draw the dog first then paint it that's where i need help is drawing the dog that picture of the dog you'r painting looks just like my boy Moose but he has a white line in between his eyes a lot of people thought he was a Golden Retriever but he wasn't Moose was a Brittany Spaniel and Australian Shepherd mix
You paint like an oil painter, (very well I must add) also you use mediums to stay wet. Why don’t you just go back to oils? Why change your acrylics to act like oils?
I was an old oil painter. I got heavy metal poisoning from oils when I was 25, that is what really turned me into being a paint chemist for 30 years. 2 of my Granddaughters have a gene that can trigger cancer if they are around oil solvents. My wife is a cancer specialist and my son a surgeon who studies cancer genes. So I run a very non-toxic studio and use only non-toxic and environmentally green products. I have fun painting and don't have to worry about over exposure to what I have in my studio. It is all safe. It also looks and paints just like oils. WHY would I take any risk? Just to say I paint in oils?
@@JansenArtEducation oh I don’t know I just like painting in oils better. Also as I re-read my comment I certainly didn’t mean to be rude, for that I apologize if it came off as such. I just recently found your channel and I just honestly wanted to know. Thank you for these in depth tutorials!
What a delightfully humble person you are! Thankyou so much for your wonderful video.
You are so welcome Sue!

Thank Pamela. Yes, I find myself using less and less numbers of brushes and working more on techniques and various marks.

Thanks Kelly!!! Before you start part 2, Turn off the bath.... put away dinner, change the laundry. That should help you enjoy part 2 more... LOL...
Wow I thought it was impossible to paint like this in acrylic... I guess I have no excuse but to try it!
Really helps you make better tones and use less blending which for me adds more interest.
Very nice work...I've been doing animal pics for family and friends so your tips help❤️👍thankyou!
Loved watching you bring the painting alive. Looking forward to part 2.

No they are in-between a thicker and thin paint. I control with the mediums. They are heavily pigmented though.

@@JansenArtEducation ok will do. thank you so much
What was the medium you put on your palette before you mixed any colors? This is my 1st time watching you. Thanks!
Heritage MultiMedia Extender. It slows down the drying time. Does not work with all acrylics. Has to be a glycol based acrylic like Heritage.
You are just fantastic.
Wow, thank you!
The other dog in the background, the lab, do you have a video for that? Loved viewing this lesson. Thank you
Yes it is part of our online classes at JansenArtOnline.com
Thanks for the video it will help me understand
Glad to hear that Rene.!
Hi Mr David, I am in New Jersey these days for four months. Would love to know if you take in person classes please

Hi, That painting is part of my S202 Art of Seeing online class. I paint a couple of retrievers in that class. Thanks so much. 😀
Thank you mr David
You got it! Thanks!
Thank you, I learned such a lot.
You're very welcome! Part 2 will be posted tomorrow. Thanks Sue,
Which warm green is that? Thank you!
Pine Green. Thanks.
you normally need not water to paint with acrylic?
Depends on the technique. Water is the solvent for acrylics. I don't use water to keep them wet. I use it as a solvent. You shouldn't use water to keep acrylics wet.

Yes I do in my online classes. I am limited on youtube what I can show. Most only want to watch a video for a few minutes.
Can you please tell me the colors you used in this painting?
They are shown at the beginning of the video.
Superbe peinture !!! Je viens de m’abonner. Can you give the namevof the colors used please ? Thank you🌸🇫🇷
So adorable😍
He was a lot of fun to paint.
Bravo. Why the glass for colors.
I like the feel of the colors on the glass. It cleans off easily and doesn't waste paper palettes.
What are you referring to when you say "caligraphy"?
The brush movement and the marks you leave. In alla prima it is called "caligraphy".
You made me laugh when you said “but this is my painting!”
LOL.. Thank you! 😀
Yes, that was so sweetly said
Could you list all the Colours you use?
I talk about all them and name them at 6 minutes into the video.
Wonderful!!
Thank you Nora! Cheers! 😀
Nice
Thanks
Hi David
Can you list the colors used . You speak too fast and I can’t understand the yellow names that you’ve used
Hansa Yellow, Diarylide Yellow, Yellow Oxide.
是您養的狗狗嗎
是黃金獵犬吧⋯⋯超級可愛的
I have 2 Yellow Labs and a Tennessee Treeing Hound. I have always love the Golden Retriever. I painted this one as request from TH-cam viewer.
