    Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Gameplay Information:
    The standalone expansion to the award-winning Total War™: SHOGUN 2 explores the conflict between the Imperial throne and the last Shogunate in 19th century Japan, 400 years after the events of the original game. A dramatic clash of traditional Samurai culture with the explosive power of modern weaponry.
    Guide ancient Japan into the modern age, as the arrival of America, Britain and France incites a ferocious civil war which will decide the future of a nation.
    -----
    Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Features:
    Dramatic 19th century Japan setting
    Based on the backdrop of the Boshin War period, the new campaign starts in 1864, a time of growing resentment against Western colonial power and influence. As Japan begins to modernise and industrialise, the inevitable social and economic changes lead to increasingly militant nationalism and antipathy towards the Shogunate.
    6 new playable clans
    Play as a clan supporting the Imperial throne, or the last Shogunate:
    Shogunate clans: Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai
    Imperial clans: Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa
    New foreign powers
    The American, British and French nations play an important part in the story of the Boshin war, and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
    New 19th century Japan campaign map
    The new island of Ezo extends the SHOGUN 2 campaign map northwards.
    Fully refreshed towns and other campaign map features reflect the new time period, with railways making their first appearance in a Total War title.
    Campaign map railways
    Develop your own railway network to move armies and agents between your regions.
    Railways can be sabotaged and transport can be blocked by enemy armies who take control of parts of the line or stations.
    39 new land units
    Including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
    New units can also be recruited from foreign powers, including the British Royal Marines, US Marine Corps and French Marines.
    10 new naval unit types with a total of 21 ships
    New steam-powered warships, heavily armed with modern artillery.
    This new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port.
    The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
    New land and sea unit interactions
    During a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
    Conversely, costal gun emplacements can target enemy ships during port siege battles, when ending their turn within the range of upgraded coastal defences.
    Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
    3 new agent types
    The Foreign Veteran, the Ishin Shishi and the Shinshengumi.
    Each new agent has its own skill tree, and Ninja and Geisha agents have had their skill trees updated with new abilities.

      The Dude supported the Emperor but didn't like the direction the government was going with the advisors around the young Emperor at the time (pretty much wanted to go to war with Korea, even willing to be the excuse for Japan to go to war with Korea, IE force the Koreans to execute him to force a war between the two), so he retired. Then those of the Satsuma domain (most of the same ones that Saigo Takamori lead during the Boshin War), particularly in Kagoshima (his hometown), started to take positions in the government there and essentially dominating the government there. The central government, (most likely those that just didn't like Satsuma or Saigo Takamori [*cough* those from Choshu *cough*]) wanted to go and disarm Kagoshima, fearing rebellion. This ironically started the rebellion (other factors were there too, I just don't remember them, they did involve the samurai class as a whole, I believe, probably something to do with abolishing the Samurai stipend, would make sense). Then the Satsuma rebels asked Saigo Takamori to get out of retirement and lead them again. He reluctantly did so, I believe he also knew the end result, but didn't feel like he could abandon his fellow Satsuma region-men (if thats even a word).
      What differs from the movie, The Last Samurai, among a whole list of things, is that Saigo Takamori always supported modernizing the military, so when the rebellion was in full swing, they fought with modern guns and everything, with i believe one point at the end when they did do a final charge like in the movie, was due in part to them running out of ammunition, not because they wanted a glorious charge to their deaths (though they might have thought, "why the hell not? we are out of ammo anyways").

They're both part in the Battle of Segikahara till they're defeated & exiled. Now after 250 years, their revenge is complete & the Old Shogunate have paid the price for their clans humiliation. There is value to black/red/white bear infantry. If you plan on going republic, they will be your best infantry until realm divide, unless you're willing to lose all your best troops when you switch sides. Keep this in mind, because its certainly better to have black bears than regular line infantry if thats all you have. Especially when you're facing stacks of big bads like Shogitai!

    • @crusaderofthelowlands3750
      @crusaderofthelowlands3750 5 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      Except the movie/story of "The Last Samurai" is highly romanticised.
      Saigo Takamori didn't fight for samurai values or the way of life, he fought to maintain his social privileges.
      Like being able to kill a commoner if he felt like they had wronged him, not having to pay taxes and not having any job aside from war, because that was beneath the Samurai.
      He wasn't opposed to modernisation either, he used modern rifles and wore western outfits. He only resorted to more traditional weaponry when he ran out of ammunition.
      As a military commander, he wasn't anything special either.
      He lost most (if not all) of the battles he fought during his rebellion and he didn't particularly stand out during the Meiji restoration.
      In short:
      He wasn't a "legendary general", he was just in charge of a futile rebellion which marked the end of the Samurai as they were.
      And that's the only reason why he is famous.

    It's be great if you could make a video on FoTS agents. There are more of them in fots than there are in the Sengoku campaign, and the power dynamic isn't a simplistic rock-paper-scissors. Their abilities also sometimes overlap. It'd be cool to see someone else's perspectives on the best use for each of them.

    The westernisation trait is great for my style of play, I like to have a foreign veteran in my most expensice army (gatling guns, marines, shogun/imperial guard, Armstrong guns ect) and just before a battle you can send the agent out to harass the enemy force which inflicts some casualties and I think it affects morale, on hard/very hard it can be a life saver.

      If you wanna be authentic and form a republic you have to be pro-shogun and watch the shogunate get its ass kicked, then flee to Hokkaido and call your republic the "Ezo Republic"

    • @TheDirtysouthfan
      @TheDirtysouthfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I noticed that the Satsuma AI tends to turn pro- Shogun alot in campaign playthroughs, so I'm guessing that's the "Satsuma Rebellion". But as for the republic, that's a late game thing and is like Realm Divide if you also turned Christian at the same time. Like Realm Divide you should keep in mind how close you're getting to it and prepare. That means getting a good econ going. FoTS rewards you for specializing cities, usually either economic or military. I like making all of my island settlements economic as the AI will rarely attack them and it's not a good idea to ferry troops just to build armies. What you really need to do however, is build police stations everywhere. I built them in every city prior to RD. They are the highest level building which spreads the influence of the faction rather than emperor/shogun. That means that people will immediately start turning pro republic after RD. From there you can level it up to get one of the highest level, which prevents pro emperor or shogun influence from spreading in your territory.
      As for units, there isn't much. The Republican infantry are for the most part the same as Imperial and Shogunate infantry, where they differ is the cavalry. Unfortunately, Republican Cavalry are just Sabre cavalry, I think they have one less melee attack with improved morale. They're worthless and I'd avoid them, go for revolver cav or Yari Ki. Which is a shame, because Shogunate Cavalry are useful and Imperial even more since they're carbine cavalry which don't require the carbine research to unlock.

      I have seen the Satsuma turning Pro Shogun as well. But I think it's because they can quickly conquer any Pro Shogunate land around them. So, they find themselves having switching sides and attacking the Saga or whoever else borders them. Just a guess, I don't know much about FotS.

    i found the best way to level any general is to stick him onto a ship, preferable Kayo Maru and better, and hunt for ai ships, with proper positioning you can sink the enemy (when attacking) without them ever shooting back. Later on i tend to hunt for the other factions ironclads (best works by using autoresolve, since ships tend to blow up alot during manual combat) and end up with two fleets full of them easily

  • @Barrystue
    @Barrystue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My strategy was the one you recommended but with less brain cells. Instead of trying to conquer through the main island, I allied with the one clan. Of course just as I approach Kyoto, they break the alliance and I’m sent all the way back. I then just go after tosa and that’s how I got to the mainland.

    Bear Infantry are so pointless. I think Bear Infantry should have been made to have shooting capabilities between line infantry and Imperial/Shogunate/Republican Infantry while having the melee attack, defense and charge bonus of Vermilion Bird Force. However Bear Infantry would lack bayonets meaning they would be vulnerable to cavalry due to having no combat bonus to cavalry. Bayonets would be be a feature given to regular infantry meaning even line infantry will have combat bonus vs cavalry of 10

    wish that bear infantry have better melee stats so that they can handle anything below katana kachi but lack bayonets making them vunverable to cavalry

    I played domination with this clan on easy mode, but Tanegashima betrayed me at around late 1860's in the game

      Lmao they did it on me too and landed with a mediocre army to capture one province from me sadly I crushed them within 2 turns effectively.Plus the farm rate is actually bugged like I had almost 30k gold turnover which I never achieved in total war shogun 2 and I was like wow xD. I finished the campaign easy no sweat.

    FUCK are Carbine Cavalry worse than Revolver Cav?

    • @MrSmartDonkeyLP
      @MrSmartDonkeyLP  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Depends on what you value, but Revolver cav are absolutely insane at destroying units as fast as humanly possible.

    • @KyoushaPumpItUp
      @KyoushaPumpItUp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lion Reichelt advantage of carbine cavalry: they are good at melee (except spearmen, of course) when they run out of ammunition.

    • @samgoldstein1993
      @samgoldstein1993 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Carbine are more versatile. I treat them like the dragoons of Empire total war. You can use them to establish easy flanking fire. Also, they can beat a lot of cavalry (excluding Yari Ki) simply through taking out half a unit before it gets to you (great accuracy). They have good enough melee to then wipe out whatever cav is left. Revolver cav are really only good at flanking fire. Their range is too short to be effective against other cav, and when you want to use flanking fire they have to get really close to the enemy. BUT, they absolutely dominate if they are able to fire unmolested. I usually go with carbine cav because in a game like this you really need to pick and choose with army comps, and I like how versatile carbines are.

      And how come you said the carbine cav won't be killing as fast as revolver cav, don't they have faster reload ?

    I think that giving a bonus to melee at all units could be a Nice trait, being them the Shimazu heirs
    Or maybe an unique unit half modern half tradicional, like a Samurai only infantry regiment, that fights as line infantry but has armor and good melee skills idk

    Am I the only one that doesn't really care much about the Gatling guns? I'd rather have a couple extra Armstrong batteries and cause havoc that way.

    Is there a specific reason clans defect?
    I love choosing satsuma because it helps me focus on grabbing Kyushu first. But i always switch allegiances to shogun because I'm a pretty pro shogun player lol.
    But everytime i play, by the time the realm divide happens, whether I'm imperial or shogunate, I'm facing down half of Japan whos sided against me, and usually find myself the only supporter of my allegiance left by turn 50 or so.

    "Tanegashima is hardcoded to stay allied with you" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 DUDE, seriously... Tanegashima is the most treacherous bitch-ass vassal in the entire TW history!!! How did you fukk this up?! (It's a Hojo- rocket level of fukup, honestly) I think everyone Satsuma player is familiar with the "Threat of an attack" notification when Tanegashima puts all his units on a boat and decides to backstab you 1 turn later, despite having a 180+ relationship. And no, Tanegashima does not switch sides while attacking, it stays pro-imperial most of the time. (9/10 l would say).

      Hindol Mukherjee spam sir infrantry and Armstrong gun. A couple yari ki is nice but not needed since they are mainly meant for mopping of routing targets or sneaking up to enemy artillery. Otherwise the sir infantry is enough to wipe everything
