Also Aizu: gets really good and unique modern units like seriously they've got line infantry that inspires units around them and they don't have the unit cap of guard units

Historically accurate though: the Shogunate in general had many more modern weapons, ships and foreign support than the imperialists but at the same time were lead by hardcore traditional samurai and daimyo. The Aizu both had famous fight to the death in the castles samurai and distinct modern rifle armed militia
I know, I did a playthrough as them thinking I was gonna go full trad. But then I saw those units. Traditional playthrough didn't last long. Might do it with another faction.
@@Rynewulf Not necessarily. The Imperialists were more modernized even in the beginning at Toba-Fushimi. Part of the reason why the Imperialists won despite being outnumbered was due to their more modernized army. They had minie rifles, more advanced artillery and even gatling guns. Choshu was noted to be the most modern army on the field. The Imperialists came out of the war far more modernized than the Shogunate ever was. In fact, the Imperials tended to be smaller, yet more modernized, on their march to Edo. The Shogunate did have modern units, but these were overshadowed by outdated levies raised by loyal clans as opposed to Satsuma and Choshu who had fully modernized their personal armies. Imperial troops were even recorded to have used American repeating rifles and breech-loading rifles.
Aizu, in the beginning of the war, had way more traditional levies armed with pikes and spears and this was common in the shogunate camp.
@@Awesomeduud It's a complex subject. The Shogunate imported many more modern rifles and ships overall and much quicker than the imperialists, but absolutely failed to hand them out and train soldiers in their use. At the end of the war they had a mass saved up and stockpiled, vs the imperialists who as you say were quite adept at making use of modern military materials and techniques

Indeed. Even in the Sengoku Jidai they loved guns so much that there ended up being so many guns in Japan that they outnumbered most European countries per capita.

20:19 I love using cannons in FPS Mode it’s like noobtubing in MW2 and it’s really satisfying to land those shots on a group of enemies during sieges.
It's amazing how well Shogun 2 holds up to this day. Yet another reason why it's the best Total War game of the franchise.
The last game to not use battle tables to ruin physical engagements. The last one with impactful military charges and less blobbed combat.

I've never seen someone play fots so traditionally. What an honorable man, not to mention fighting for the shogun.
After seeing Aizu were victorious and the Tokugawa Shogun survived the Boshin War in an alternative universe, the loyal warriors of the Aizu domain, those last true Japanese can now rest in peace.
You dont know pain untill you do a traditional units only, republic, legendary campaign as the Aizu. All things aside, traditional units are crazy good as long as you know how to buff them up and utilize them. Ive sometimes been able to get almost 1000 kills on a single unit of fully armoured+melee defence yari kachi during a siege battle by sneaking it around the back of a castle and climbing in. Since most modern units tend to have low melee defence, you can just slaughter them in most cases, twas quite a fun experience.
I would give it a more challenging feel because most other clans just feel the same when doing battles, the aizu was a welcomed change

Aaah, attacking the Shogunate off the bat. Reminds me of me pulling a Winfield Scott in my Satsuma campaign and going straight for Edo. I easily wrecked them and they became my vassal. "Where's your Shogun now?" I asked.
I think one of my favorite parts of your videos would be the music you play at the end. It really confers the feeling of the end of a long and brutal struggle.

I used mods for Shogun 2 before seeing your work, but your vids made me really re-evaluate what a good mod order should look like for this game. I've had some of the best total war campaigns of my life playing on modded shogun 2 thanks to your inspiration. Even snagged that legendary victory achievement for the first time on a modded up campaign, which of course made it more difficult than if it had been done on vanilla. I dedicate that 'against all odds' to you.

I loved playing a traditionalist only campaign. The strategy I eventually landed on was to only fight during fog/rain, mass charge and surround with cavalry for an instant win. Very satisfying
Playing in Shogun after Warhammer is something - bullets work like a bullets, artillery kill like a artillery must kill, wonderful.

Pilps two things my man 1. Looting is always better than Peaceful Occupation and 2. Use your ashigaru and their FOTS counterparts like Levy Spearmen to run toward the enemy's gates these units have firebombs they'll throw the bombs at the door by hovering over the door where a fire icon with appear click on the door and they'll burn it down so you can easily get inside so no more wall climbing and losing men you can also use it to remove enemy towers as well. Also, you have to get pretty close to the door for it to work properly but once it's ignited move your men back from the door till the job's done then move in.
