    Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Features:
    Dramatic 19th century Japan setting
    Based on the backdrop of the Boshin War period, the new campaign starts in 1864, a time of growing resentment against Western colonial power and influence. As Japan begins to modernise and industrialise, the inevitable social and economic changes lead to increasingly militant nationalism and antipathy towards the Shogunate.
    6 new playable clans
    Play as a clan supporting the Imperial throne, or the last Shogunate:
    Shogunate clans: Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai
    Imperial clans: Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa
    New foreign powers
    The American, British and French nations play an important part in the story of the Boshin war, and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
    New 19th century Japan campaign map
    The new island of Ezo extends the SHOGUN 2 campaign map northwards.
    Fully refreshed towns and other campaign map features reflect the new time period, with railways making their first appearance in a Total War title.
    Campaign map railways
    Develop your own railway network to move armies and agents between your regions.
    Railways can be sabotaged and transport can be blocked by enemy armies who take control of parts of the line or stations.
    39 new land units
    Including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
    New units can also be recruited from foreign powers, including the British Royal Marines, US Marine Corps and French Marines.

      The Shogunate justified its actions by claiming that imperialists were trying to brainwash the emperor. In their mind, as with the imperialists, they were on the side of the emperor so the fact that the emperor lived in Kyoto wouldn't have bothered them.

    Just so you know, it is a huge misconception that the Shogunate was traditional while the Imperialists were modern. In reality both embraced modern methods and weapons. The misconception comes from the movie "Last of the Samurai" obviously. A hollywood movie that is historically inaccurate, who would would have thought?

    • @Striker345ify
      @Striker345ify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      While that may be true, the problem with pro-shogunate forces is that they are poorer than the Satsuma and Choshu Clans, thus unable to afford as many Modern Rifles as them. Therefore they had to often rely on pre-modern weaponry.

      In the revolt that the last samurai is based on they did acctually use mostly bows and swords. However this is mostly due to the fact that they ran out of ammunition ;)

    • @jevan1453

      Yeah The Last Samurai is based on the Satsuma rebellion rather than the Boshin War but the film does make it seem like the samurai refused to use modern weapons when in reality they embraced rifles and cannons but fought instead for their privileges in society.

      While Samurai did use guns (in fact in the 16th century there where more guns in Japan than in the whole rest of the world!) the Shogunates final battle did largely go as depicted in the movie weirdly enough. For a much more mundain reason than "honour" though: the rebels had run out of bullets...

      The last samurai was a French: Jules Brunet (not Tom Cruise). He refused to leave the last Shogun, when the french diplomacy asked him to leave Japan. He refused to leave in the name of honor, and with his team of diplomatic french military fought with the Shogun against the Imperialists. When the last Shogun was defeated on Honshu (the main island of Japan) and moved to Hokkaido. The last samurai was appointed as the minister of defense while his team served other minister positions. He ordered the construction of Vauban (Vauban was a french military genius of the 16th century, he was named by the court of the Sun King, and then became Vauban's nickname "the french Leonardo Da Vinci") style fortresses on Hokkaido, of whom are still there today. When the last Shogun was defeated he was forced to retreat to France, there Japanese Imperial's wanted him punished. However the French government commended him and let him take a year of break before he went back to his work. (All while that the French were "pretending that they did punish him" to please the Japanese).

    So I originally wrote this for your Artillery only play-through but never posted it. Better late than never eh?
    "Seeing how a lot of people don't particularly like or know how to play ship battles in FotS, I'd thought I'd write up a quick formulaic guide.
    Exploits/bugs:
    -Shoot & Repair: While in third person, you can still manually shoot even while repairing your ship.
    -Triple barrage: Your third person cannon shots do not force your non-third person (overview) cannons to reload. You can quickly send 3 barrages by firing: manual 3rd person -> overview & right click on target -> manual 3rd person.
    -Explosive shot: Not actually a exploit, it's just outrageously strong despite the range decrease. It can allow your ships to comfortably go 3:1 and still win. Rush this research for naval dominance.
    Matchups:
    -Solid shot vs Solid Shot (Atk/Def): Shoot & repair exploit. Nothing interesting.
    -Explosive shot vs Solid shot (Atk/Def): Sail directly to leftmost enemy. Take at least 2 solid shot barrages before turning (solid shot damage is insignificant). Triple barrage with explosive shot for instagib. Shoot & repair through everything else. Change to solid shot if they try to kite you.
    -Explosive shot vs Explosive shot (Def): Shoot & repair exploit with explosive shot. Try to set as many ships on fire as possible - this can prevent some from firing. DO NOT EVER STOP REPAIRING IF YOU ARE ON FIRE.
    -Explosive shot vs Explosive shot (Atk): Right click with solid shot on rightmost enemy. This'll bring you to solid shot's range limit. Fire with solid shot once and then change to explosive shot. Wait for them and shoot & repair exploit.
    -Ironclad vs ??? (Atk/Def): Doesn't matter. Explosive shot and go.
    Other tips:
    -The American military mission is the best mission to take as you can produce two ironclads from it. Each one alone can probably take a enemy full stack anyway.
    -Use as of a small ship stack as you can. This'll make enemies attack you instead of having to chase them around constantly. 1-3 ships is normal.
    -The weaker your hull, the more likely your ship will explode.
    -Auto resolve is garbage. You will receive 5-10x the damage from using it.
    -Start control early. You only need ~4 ships with explosive shot to hold off most forces.
    -The Kanrin Maru can one-shot some ships in a single barrage. This is the only ship to worry about excluding ironclads."

      I've posted on old videos of his and got replies. I don't see you needing to post stuff on a more recent unrelated video in order for him to see it. Also you failed to mention armor piercing and advanced armor piercing rounds.
      Lastly, Atk and Def refers to if you started the battle or if your opponent started it right?

    Shinsengumi are former masterless samurai who formed shogunate police so they are traditional unite but use both samurai weapon and modern guns
    .and specially playing Aizu would be historicaly correct because of Matsudaira Katamori was one of greatest patrons of shinsengumi. Funny think he was not against Imperor just was declered enemy of Imperor by his political enemies in imperial court, they where envy of him because he had brilliant plans and ideas to modernize Japanese in one army and use also masterless samurai in this process. Not like they did after this boshin war when lots of imperial sided samurai were lied to and basically rebelled again . He was traditionalist but he embreced modern type of warfare. To the end he never openly declered him self on the side of shogunate but he allowed parts of his army and samurai join shogunate and letter Ezo republic forces. He was spared and after war he became monk.
    P.S. Actually White Tigers is historical regiment of young samurai pretty much school boys who fought in denfse of Aizu , they all commited seppuku surrounded by Imperial forces and seeing that Aizu castle is burning , to this day in that place stands monument ofered by Benito Mussolinni in times of WW2 . He send orginal column from Pompei :) So it is traditional unit historicaly but in game lookslike modern

      @Zetarn Because that would make Shogitai utterly Overpowered. They already trashed anything in melee to the point that parking a couple of this guy in the castle was all you needed to repel a full stack army of Levies and regular Line Infantry. Add in rifle and then they'd likely trash even Shogunate/Imperial/Republic Infantry as well.

    The "zu" is pronounced, it sounds kind of like eyezoo. If the shinsengumi police force is acceptable since it is a samurai gun unit, then hypothetically the white tiger force could have possibly been acceptable. The Byakkotai was a unit of 16 and 17 year old samurai. They were originally meant to be for training, but through the events of the Boshin War they ended up being sent into battle. Almost all of them killed themselves with the fall of Aizu. Not saying you have to, it is your let's play. Just saying that technically, it is a samurai unit.

    Shinsengumi were formed in 1863 and the name loosely means "newly elected people", so they are a modern unit. Historically they were also made up of more than just samurai. For the record, I don't care whether you use them or not in this campaign, just out of clarity, they are a modern unit with modern rifles and modern concept of a diverse group. Saber cavalry are also a modern unit, using western-style sabers, bugles and uniforms instead of the Japanese saber (the katana). Use what you wish and have fun.

    I don't think at that point in time the currency was koku anymore. The koku was a measurement of rice that was enough to feed a person for a whole year, roughly 150 kg of rice. So, like, if a Daimyo wanted to have 400 warriors, they needed to produce at least 400 koku in their provinces each year, so they could feed the army. Officers took more, because they would give it to their wives, who would in turn hire servants and personal guards.

      The French were with the Shogun, but that doesn't mean they're traditional. I won't be using them, they're like the most advanced unit there is.

      It actually depends what regional dialect you're speaking to what extent the 'u' is audible - generally it's a voiceless consonant [ɯ̥] (IPA). That said, in cases such as "Aizu" it is definitely not a straight [u] sound as in "zoo".

    Just started this kinda challenge myself, im not allowing me to use ANY muskets or arty at all for now.
    Only trad units, without a musket, So either bow, sword or spear.
    I have no navy right now and I will try to avoid having one as long as possible, the only exception to some muskets I have are garrisoned units that I allow as its not really part of "my army".

    IMHO Aizu and Choshu are good clans for going republic because they each have unique units that are basically on par with SIR infantry, but don't disappear when you go republic.

    No matchlocks. Do something like Vampire counts playstyle. Yari levies as meat shield. Katana kachi and yari ki mostly. Just few yari kachi for defence from enemy cavs but you could do that with yari ki so not much needed.
    Ps. Those unarmoured melee katana wielders are also good(forgot the name, is it shogitai?)

  • @firefox3249
    @firefox3249 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pro tip: You'll need meat shield units. Matchlock Kachi are excellent since they can spread their formation, they have guns of their own and they're decent in melee.
    Now bonus points if you ban everything that gives you "clan modernization". Factories, markets, ships, shipyards, everything (you can use gunboats for transportation only)! It might even be more benefitial if you stay at modernization level 1.

    • @SGProductions87
      @SGProductions87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Staying at level 1 or 2, you're basically sacrificing tens of thousands of koku for the sake of some extra experience on your traditional units and the potential ability to use Stand and Fight with a general's hatomoto that is 60 strong. To begin with that extra experience is valuable. But once you have recruited your first full stack, it isn't worthwhile. And Stand and Fight is not as good as Ganbatte. Having 60 in your hatamoto is definitely valuable but becomes less relevant once you have Yari Ki.

    In my experience, traditional units only is not so bad. The AI is too stupid, so once you reach them you'll butcher them completely with your melee combat superiority.

  • @faceoctopus4571
    @faceoctopus4571 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For what counts as a "traditional unit" I'd go by the criteria of "if you'd get an experience boost recruiting this unit if you'd have low clan modernization". What building the unit comes from and if the unit was used in the sengoku period would be irrelevant. Sadly, I'm not sure where you'd get that info. Because Aizu get +1 experience with traditional units, that could be a way to tell assuming you are playing Aizu (which you are).
    As for the ships, I dislike the idea of you using ships, but based personal experience, having a navy is important in FOTS because enemies being able to costal bombard your provinces with impunity is not fun. So going without ships is impractical. You could limit yourself to unarmored ships. Looking at a Steam comment, it appears that some ships are unable to be in boarding combat altogether. So even if you wanted to limit yourself to only board enemy ships, you wouldn't be able to attack some of them.

    I don't think you would do Multi-Coop campaigns but I would really like a committed person to play with on Coop XD Rome 2 and Shogun.
    (Also I don't even use guns on the field but mostly just for defence since...Defence lol, My Aizu campaigns have gone well with just Traditional Samurai units with no guns other than the defences since its kinda needed and also unavoidable. I went last Samurai Build for my campaigns and its fairly easy until you reach end game somewhere.)

      I'm actually starting a mod spotlight series soon, but it won't be top 5's or anything, just spotlighting different mods each video. Can't really do a top 5 best mods, that would mean I'd have to try every single mod available to form a proper opinion.

    What's the story behind "the bitch goku"?

    • @MrSmartDonkeyLP
      @MrSmartDonkeyLP  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bitch Koku is basically a way to make another clan your bitch. Usually when getting a trade deal with another clan you ask them for some money, sometimes they pay a lot, other times they don't want to pay anyway. In the latter case you ask them for a single koku, if they're willing to accept that they're basically admitting they're your bitch because it's an even deal, trade for trade, but they'll pay a koku to make it happen, hence the bitch koku.
