Jerry and Jimmy knew each other since they played college ball at Arkansas in the 1960s. Their relationship was based on more deeply than owner/employee. Jerry micro manages, and they are both strong egos. Besides, Jerry totally disrespected one of the best football coaches in Tom Landry when he fired he and GM Tex Schramm as he bought the Cowboys.
I remember living in Dallas at the time Jimmy was the Cowboys coach. He made the games so exciting. The players were very talented, but I believe he brought out the best in them. The Super Bowls they won proved that. Jerry Jones was very careless causing Jimmy to leave. The Cowboys have never been that exciting again, sad to say.
He's a great coach, cost my team a couple of superbowls (49ers)......lol.....Cowboys should have tried to keep him 1-2 more years. Wasn't the same when he left.
Jerry was the problem. Still is. Wants to be the owner, GM, head coach, assistant coach, personal trainer, quarterback coach, janitor, and third string punter.
What Jimmy Johnson doesn't say here, although has said in other past interviews, is Jerry Jones' stranglehold over the franchise solidified his decision to leave the Cowboys. Jones would always place himself over everyone else, to be the most visible person responsible for the success of Dallas...not the coaches and players. After Johnson left, the dysfunction spread over the entire organization, despite winning a Super Bowl under Switzer with the Johnson built team. Since then, the Cowboys have been an underachieving ball club at best.
Exactly. Jerry destroyed the Cowboys just as fast as he helped get them to the top. It must haunt him everyday of his life knowing his ego was the cause of the Cowboys demise.
I think Jimmy leaving had to do with Jerry. Jerry wanted complete control and Jimmy wanted complete control and Jerry wasn't having it and therefore they parted ways.
Respect for any man who realizes that you work hard, make sacrifices and then you enjoy those sacrifices with friends and family. The differences are as he says is realizing when to stop.

Jerry wanted to be part of the “coaching club” with Turner and Dave W, but wasn’t allowed in. So essentially he fired Jimmy. The not having fun is complete BS, winning is fun. As Aikman said, both Jones and Johnson asked the players to sacrifice but in turn they wouldn’t do it them selves so it blew up.
Exactly. Jimmy’s full of BS here. He’s just trying to temper what everyone knows: that was the dumbest thing ever for Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson to have their little spat resulting in departure of the coach. Yes, it was mostly Jerry’s fault, but Jimmy could’ve stayed. now he’s trying to save his reputation, just like Jerry Jones is trying to save his. The only one speaking any truth on this is Troy Aikman. This was a complete shame, and it never should’ve happened. Jimmy and his fishing story is just another made up fishing story.

It's really interesting to hear some wisdom from Jimmy. But with the passing of his mom, he also realized that the people you care about aren't around forever so he gave it all up to spend more time with them. I'm glad he's happy and he seems to be at peace with how his career in the NFL turned out

Jimmy Johnson is one of the best coaches to ever come along. Jerry Jones is a narcissist that can’t get past his own self. Dallas will never win another Super Bowl as long as this narcissist is the team owner and President.
And Jones has never been able to build a champion team since. He bought that one. People blame the coaches quarterbacks, and other players but in reality it all falls on the owner that does not know how build a winning team.
Well, part of that is because a salary cap was put in. You people forget that it was Jerry who opened his pocket book to get Charles Haley. Did Jimmy do that?
It really came down to that both wanted all the credit and they didn't want to share it together. If they had been say what we saw with the Patriots with Bellichick, Bob Kraft, and QB Tom Brady, the Cowboys wouldn't have gone down 21-0 against the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship game after 3 possessions. I know Jimmy would have gotten the team ready. Yes, Jerry was trying to take over more of the operation and I can't blame Jimmy for that, but if the credit was shared and Jerry's ego wasn't in the way, the Cowboys could have easily won 4 or even 5 straight Super Bowls. Jerry is the single remaining denominator on the franchise, and they've won nothing meaningful since. Once the fanbase gets tired enough of pumping money in the Jones' direction things will change. This Cowboys fanbase has all the power that matters to Jerry...FINANCIAL. And you're mad at how he's fattened the pockets of NFL owners and teams? Look at Jerry World. Say what you want about that guy, but 'he's a freaking business genius.
Jimmy Johnson hair and voice vs. Bill Clinton Hair and voice. Jerry Jones fuzz and creepy sound win with the help of mainstream media profiting from creating a villain. Still mad that Jones fired Landry right before the end of the Cold War and is still with the Cowboys longer than Landry was who started the Cowboys. Who would Landry have selected to replace himself? The same way with Al Davis when he got rid of Gruden in the 2002 offseason. He could’ve captured that 4th trophy for his Raiders if he didn’t ship Gruden to Tampa. Big egos will cost you success so therefore you need to let it go.
They should have given the Vikings some of those SB rings for that ridiculous ransom they got for the Herschel Walker trade. Dumbest trade in NFL history on the Vikings part, and Jimmy knew just what to do with all of those picks. Jimmy Johnson was the greatest talent evaluator of his day, bar none.
"I wasn't having fun." Tell that to the tens of millions of people who WORK for a living to provide the basic needs for their families. No wonder it took 30 years for them to put you in the Ring of Honor.
That's not why. If you read the history, Jerry is the committee of one who decides who goes on the ring. Jerry's ego is the reason it took so long. The way he treated Landry was unconscionable. They could have come to an agreement. Landry could have retired or just decided to leave. Jerry wiped away Landry and cared nothing for him. Alabama won't do that with Saban. Successful former coaches are to be celebrated.
All these comments praising Jimmy and downing Jerry. Well, at the end of the vid here, Jimmy basically tells you what an a-hole he was back then , but because he was the coach and not the meddling owner, he get's all the love. So Jerry FIRED Landry. BIG WHOOP! It was time and I loved the Cowboys of Landry. Why aren't we pissed at Bum Bright? He HATED Tom. I love Jerry Jones' passion. He loves the hell out of the Cowboys. He hasn't won a Super Bowl in 29 years. Ok.
Jerry was acting like a meddling jerk. I never blamed Jimmy for wanting out.

I’ll never understand why Joe buck has a job
Who cares
All these comments praising Jimmy and downing Jerry. Well, at the end of the vid here, Jimmy basically tells you what an a-hole he was back then , but because he was the coach and not the meddling owner, he get's all the love. So Jerry FIRED Landry. BIG WHOOP! It was time and I loved the Cowboys of Landry. Why aren't we pissed at Bum Bright? He HATED Tom. I love Jerry Jones' passion. He loves the hell out of the Cowboys. He hasn't won a Super Bowl in 29 years. Ok.
he quit on the cowboys
💯
Don't blame him. He was the brains behind the team and Jerry couldn't stand it.
Troy still whining..
Lucky coach with a good team most of them are hall of famers with out them he didn't do 💩
Absolutely biggest mistake in American sports history.
