👀 The "non-runner" who won at the Cheltenham Festival! Binocular lands the 2010 Champion Hurdle

- A look back at a classic renewal of the Champion Hurdle at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival as Binocular ran out a commanding winner in the hands of AP McCoy.
Successfully transformed from non-runner to winner in the space of less than a month, Binocular (9-1) took the Champion Hurdle under Tony McCoy. Four weeks previously, a muscle problem was said to have been identified which would keep him out of the race but, after the six-year-old schooled well at Nicky Henderson's Lambourn yard on the Wednesday before the race, the decision was taken that he would run after all.
Blinkered for the first time, Celestial Halo set the early pace, stalked by Binocular's stablemate Zaynar. Coming down the hill with half a mile to go, McCoy eased his mount into contention and, from the third-last onwards, his mount appeared a certain winner.
When asked to quicken before the last, Binocular took the sting out of his nearest pursuer, Khyber Kim, and maintained a healthy advantage all the way to the line, eventually scoring by three and a half lengths, with Zaynar plugging on for third.
The winning owner JP McManus said: "I'd torn up my ticket a few weeks ago and it was only last week when Nicky got back in touch and said, 'I think we might just be able to do this'."
This was a fifth victory in the Champion Hurdle for Henderson, equalling the record held by Peter Easterby.

I was there this day in 2010 . I'd backed Binocular all through the season , £20 - £50 here and there and had about 15 bet slips with prices ranging from 6/1 dowm to 2/1 approaching Xmas. When he was " declared " a non runner his price went out to 7/1 , backed him more and on the day i stuck another £100 @ 8/1 on the course on the day . I was positioned at the final flight - when Mcoy jumped the last " jet propelled " I shouted so much my balls dropped off LOL . What a day and what a punt !!

No such thing as a a bad champion hurdle in my opinion. My fav race of the year. Can’t all be night nurse ,sea pigeon .istabraq but binocular pretty good

@gerrymcguire7382 Totally agree .They have to be quality horses to even qualify for the Champion Hurdle.Waa a bit iffy though him being backed at 999/1 then winning so easily. I do really rate Nicky Henderson as a trainer but can't help thinking he landed a touch here.
