I just had my surgery last week. I chose lumpectomy because of the less down-time I would have. And great news, my surgeon got a healthy margin around the tumor, and my Sentinal nodes showed no spreading. I did lose the nipple because the tumor was under it. But I'm 62, and I really don't care what it looks like. The general public isn't going to see me shirtless anyway!
Thank you for sharing! I'm so happy to hear that everything went well woth your surgery (clean margins and clear nodes!!!)🙏👏🥳!!! I love your postive perspective on the nipple too! Wishing you a quick recovery and continued health moving forward🌷
Chelsey, you made the right decision. I had a lumpectomy16 years ago and my cancer has returned. Now I have to go in for a bilateral mastectomy. I wish I had done it 16 years ago.
I'm so sorry to hear that your cancer returned😔. Sending many positive vibes your way tonight💕💫. Thank you for the resurrance in my decision, I also think it was the right one❤❤. Take care🌷
Tks so much for sharing! I’m trying to make a decision between the 2 options for myself and indeed it’s a hard one to make. I have obtained second opinions from other drs to gather as many facts as possible. Brave women such as yourself I thank for posting your experience!
You are so genuine in sharing your experiences and wanting to help others. I am so glad I got a chance to view your videos. Not only are they very informative and also very calming. You not only share your experiences but also your heart. I am very thankful to you especially during this time when I’m going through trials and tribulations. In my chaotic state, your calming voice was able to calm me down and your reasoning was able to make me stop and listen. Thank you
Thank you so so much for your feedback on my videos🙏💕. That makes my heart so happy that they were able to bring some calm to you in the thick of yhr chaos. Sending much love, strength and resilience to you💕💪💫
I found your video message on BC surgery. It is very informative and helpful for those who must under go the procedure. I myself am scheduled for a lumpectomy at the end of the month. Like you I had to considered my choices, I had come to the conclusion that a bilateral mastectomy would be the best option for "peace of mind". However the Surgeon (a very nice young woman) assured me that a lumpectomy would be best. As we know, with the lumpectomy, the recovery time is less, the chances of complication is less, but with cancer there are no guarantees either way. Now a week after meeting with the Surgeon, I'm beginning to have doubts about the lumpectomy even though my tumors (2 in the same breast) are very small. I must consider once again what is best for me. As I told the Surgeon "Medical patients are the most difficult, specially those us trained in pathology". As hard as I try to accept her recommendation, obviously I have not reached the "peace of mind" state yet.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I so resonate with the inner debate you are having with deciding which is the best decision for YOU. I'm so happy this video was helpful for you in some way. Sending positive thoughts and vibes for you to come to a decision that brings you the "piece of mind" you seek. Much love💞💪🌷
Thank you very much Chelsey! Your videos is a source of very insightful information, tips and advice, shared with so much love and honesty. I really appreciate all the information!! I'm faced currently with these decisions (unfortunately I don't have much time to decide), and I'm also quite young (
I went to ER with what i thought was asthma attack dr thought i had a blood clot so took scans found lung breast and lymph cancer. Given not long that was 7/5/24 just did the biopsy im praying im a candidate for mastectomy because i have had breast issues since 15 years old.
Great video! I'm in the process of making this choice myself. Do you think it is reasonable for someone to decide, even if the surgeon says he thinks one option is better, that they still feel more comfortable with the other option anyway?
I'm happy you found it helpful♡. I think individuals have insights into their personal body/mind that surgeons dont have. In the end it's your body, and a decision you'll need to live with. Another option could be to see a different surgeon for a second opinion, perhaps they will resonate with your needs more?
@@ChelseyTarnow yes, and I'm also seeing a female oncologist Friday. I'm going to just be honest and tell her what my fears are. Hopefully she can give me some guidance. Thanks!
@@stoogeswoman wonderful! I felt like it was so important to have a team that I was able to talk to and felt they listened. I hope your oncologist is a great fit and all your fears/concerns get addressed♡
I just had my lumpectomy 15 days ago. I didn't get the option for mastectomy and I worry every day. I live in a little tiny town in Idaho and I used a local surgeon. I am having all my records sent to a cancer center, because right now I just had the surgery, no treatments, and I have been so ill informed about what is going on with me. Surgeon told me a few things but said the surgery would be enough. I think it is because I have no health insurance. Sad 😢But hopefully the cancer center will take my case and put all my worries to rest for me. Thank you for this video.
Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for your message and sharing where you are at. My heart goes out to you in a big way, I can remember how scared/frustrated/helpless I felt the beginning when wanting to know and understand what was going on, or the treatment I would need and the information never came quick enough. In my experience the cancer center was so helpful, very knowledgeable and if they needed to do more testing to see if I needed more treatments they did. I felt comfortable in their care and I hope you feel the same. Sending so much love, strength and positive vibes your way. xo
I would have done exactly as you did if I'd had a 5cm tumour. I was offered a third option which I accepted. Being a large breasted woman with a 1.2cm right upper quadrant tumour I was given a therapeutic mammoplasty which entailed removing the tumour with a MUCH bigger margin (300gms in weight) around it and reconstructing the breast using healthy tissue from the bottom of my breast. This naturally reduced my breast size considerably so a normal reduction was performed on the other side for symmetry. I knew that if my sentinel nodes were clear I would not want radiation therapy or other adjuvant therapies. I feel I have achieved the best of both worlds. No need for further invasive treatments with side effects/ good outcome with peace of mind/ aesthetically pleasing/ breast sensation unimpaired, apart from one "dead" nipple. I also have much more comfortable breasts with less neck, shoulder and back pain, no more chafing below. It was very major bi-lateral surgery and recovery is ongoing (5 weeks post op) but altogether happy with my decision.
Thank you for sharing! I'm so happy that this third option was available to you and you are feeling so good both in your body image as well as physically. Wishing you continued healing and enjoying getting back into your regular activities and life 🌷🌷!
I'm so confused, i have Triple Negative stage 2 MY surgery is March 7, 2023 im so un decided trying see my Option Having mastectomy vs Lumpectomy Im 45 my first cancer journey Please help
I'm so sorry for your diagnosis😔. Honestly, this decision was such a hard on for me and it is such a personal decision. My beat advice is to gather all the information from your medical team you can and based on that make the best decision for you. I hope very soon, you feel confident in the path you will take🙏. Sending much love❤
Thank you Chelsey for sharing and making this video. I made what I call a gut feeling immediate decision and skipped a step. I chose to have a surgical biopsy without having a core biopsy which was done June 27th 2022. My tumor was about 10 MM and the surgeon removed about 2 CM . Thankfully he got it all and the margins are clear but it was positive invasive carcinoma grade two I don't know what all that means as I have not meant with a oncologist doctor. Something just told me I had to get this thing out asap. I had multiple ultra sounds and a Breast MRI with contrast and the Lymph nodes looked fine. Those were not biopsied I asked the surgeon to do that but he said there can be consequences. Can I ask you how did you discover your tumor 5 CM seems large did you have symptoms?
I am so sorry to hear you have a postive diagnosis, my heart goes out to you💌. But I SO LOVE that you followed your intuition and skipped to the step the felt right for you which ended in you finding it sooner ans getting it out🙏! I explained my story in one of my videos, I'll tag it below. But I ended up finding it when checking in with my breasts one night while lying in bed. I had a feeling a few years prior and requested some testing from a doctor to which I was denied saying I was too young to be worried about breast cancer. After my diagnosis I realized there were a few signs my body was giving me that something was off, but at the time it never clicked as "I was too young to worry about BC". One of the many lessons I learned through this journey. Stand up ans listen to your body and gut.
@@ChelseyTarnow Yes I am very big on following your gut because anytime I didn't I was sorry. So now because I skipped that step. My surgeon that did the lumpectomy can't seem to get over because he does everything by the book. I think he knows I was right and I was okay with doing the Sentinal Biopsy at the time but he said there are consequences without having any diagnosis. I guess part of that would be right for the insurance as there is no justification for doing that procedure. So I am having another surgery this Weds. 7/13 to do the Sentinal Lymph Node Biopsy but I do not like the part where they inject that radioactive dye in you and what are the consequences of having that put in me. What is that going to do to the lymph nodes in my right breast? Is it going to cause more cancer? They got it all and the margins were clear and it was so small I do not understand why I have to have it done. Even my mom who is a cancer survivor feels the same way she is wondering why haven't they done a CT Body Scan where they can also Zero in on the Lymph nodes. That is terrible about that doctor if he had listened to you it could have been addressed earlier. Doctor's find me to be a pain because I question everything and if they are good they should not have a problem with that. Did you have to have this kind of biopsy ? and if so did it hurt when they injected that dye ???
