I’ve watched a bunch of inferior videos on hub/lug centric before finding your vid. For me, it’s by far the best explanation on TH-cam about how the friction/clamping force works! Thank you for finally settling the issue for me. The others championed the use of hub rings and then you read the comments and people argue back and forth. One guy even claimed to be an ase certified mechanic and claimed w/o the rings, all of the weight is on the lug studs. Which makes 0 sense because of what you said about plastic rings. Thank you again for finally giving me peace of mind that my wheels aren’t going to fall off 🤪

Just spent $1700 on new wheels and tires for my truck and never thought of lug centric/ hub centric. After noticing the bore on my new rims was dramatically larger then the hub on my truck I started freaking out. U explained this perfectly and it makes perfect sense. Thanks so much for sharing . Maybe I can finally get some sleep after 6 days of freaking out

Hey Will, enjoying the series....question, would tapered lugs make the hub rings somewhat redundant (obviously tightened hand tight then torqued in a star pattern)? I've got new wheels for my WRX (daily driver) and totally overlooked the possible need for hub rings.
North Vapes It depends if the wheels you're fitting are hubcentric or lugcentric. As a general rule I suggest just fitting them anyway to be 100% sure you won't have problems. If you're not getting any vibrations at all then chances are your wheels are lugcentric and you're totally fine.

The common misconception with that is that the studs are carrying the weight of the car where in fact it’s only there to hold the nuts and therefore holding the wheel in place. For a while back I always thought that way, now I am informed.
bro i have cadillac ats its bolt pattern is 5x115 and i want to change alloywheels but all alloywheels has 5x114.3 size. can i use 5x114.3 size with hub centric ring?

I want to put 17 alloys wheels ho was made from the factory (original seat Arona) to fit with M14 bolts with an R14 radius. I want to put it on a Subaru with M12 x1.25 lugnuts with R12 radius.

Hello, i have a question. My car's wheel hub is 67.1mm and and aftermarket alloy wheels bore size is 67.5mm..Do i need a hub ring to fill such a small gap?
Tire shop uses pneumatic gun with stick to initially set lugs hopefully in star pattern. What torque is normally used for the gun in this initial setting ? I have never seen the tire shop adjust the torque wrench for final tightening. I purchased after market rims about three months ago - vehicle has been vibrating since - I had all suspension checked by Buick - having new after market rims sent this week - shop uses Hunter balancing machine but wonder about the cone they use - never seen them change out the cone for different size rims - vehicle has hub rings - what do you recommend for installation procedure of lug nuts ?
Them plastic hub rings ain’t gonna catch fire 🔥 endless ur cars on fire lol and the tapper lugs will work jus fine on a lug centric wheel vs a non centric what I’ve learn so far from theses hub rings is if you have a gap/space between ur bore and wheel probably not a bad idea to use ring’s…. If the wheel centers Jus right on your hub/rotters you should b fine with out either one☝🏼
I have mag lugs on my Lexus and they are shortish, can is use acorn replacements, can I switch without any safety issue. My mags are also short compared to rim pockets holes so hard to feel the thread when screwing in without tool (Dont want to x-thread)

Hey, great video. I have a 2017 f-250 and would like to put on RBP glocks 20 x 10 with a -12 backspace 8 x 170 . They have two center bore options they say will fit. 125mm and 129 mm. My hub size is 124.9 . Which center bore size would be better or does it matter? Would the 125 be hubcentric because the diameter is close or does it depend on the wheel itself?
Thanks! With the 124.9mm centre bore you shouldn't need hub rings. :)
I know the video is quite old but it’s a brilliant video and explained very well what I needed to know. Although I have one question if possible. My car has m12x1.25 studs and am trying to fit a wheel from a car that is m14x1.5 so of course my m12 lug nuts were too skinny for the new wheel that almost got through the whole on wheel. Finally my question is how can I find the right lug nut for this situation?? I need to buy it online and not sure how to do it right. Thanks for the help

Apparently clamping force is a difficult concept.
That may b but ur wheel may not b centered right causing vibration there is a right way to center the wheel when installing using the tip of your foot to even out the center of holes on wheel then tighten lug nuts 🔩

Jermain Matthew yes. You'll need to get some rings to fit them safely.

If the rings are custom made is it better to make them by steel for more strength (or stainless steel) than aluminium?
So if the taper on the lug nuts matches the taper on the wheel lug nut holes, you dont need hub centric rings? The lug nuts takes care of centering the wheel?

The lug nuts I have now are too wide and dont fully fit the rims I have. I've tried going to autozone and walmart to find thinner lug nuts but I cant find any because I dont know the exact dimensions of what i need. Think you could help?
What about mag type lugs? They center the wheel as well if I am not mistaken..

Thnx for the reply. So you had vibrations even though you had conical nuts and therefore the hub ring wasnt necessary? Cause according to this video hub rings aren't necessary when conical nuts are used. I'm trying to find out if I can mount my new wheels without the hub rings, since the nuts and nuts holes from the rim are both conical and the wheel would centre perfectly without hub ring, in theory at least.
@@uwtab6898 I just installed my wheels without hub rings and using conical nuts. I have had no issues with vibration. The trick is you have to make sure you securely tighten them down and the wheel itself has to be lug centric. You can’t use conical nuts on a non lug centric wheel and expect to have a smooth ride. Each wheel is designed for its purpose. To either fit securely on you hub or to fit securely only when conical nuts are used and torqued down.

So is it safe even with out them? I bought 4 rimz and had to put on only 2 at a time. The first pair the mechanic never mentioned any o ring for the rims too fit...

Got a set of Miro wheels for my 2016 wrx. Says I need tuner lug nuts, how do I know which size I need
Not sure why, but I have some wheels for my daily and the normal lugnuts were too thick for the lug holes so I ordered aftermarket ones. They match my thread pitch, fit in the wheels, etc. Only thing is they dint allow me to tighten all the way almost as if they are too short but they aren't. Help!
Sounds like you need lug nuts that fit.

I have a set of old OEM SVT wheels that came off a 1998 Ford SVT Contour, and I got them powdercoated to Cardinal Gold and I had put them on my 2010 Ford Focus, and I have a lug centric spacers, but I was trying to find the right size for the hub centric rings, do you have any idea what is the right size for the ring of my SVT wheel?
+SPM easy to figure out. Just measure the inner diameter of the hub bore on your wheel and the outer diameter of the hub on your car. :)
Hi, serious question. The place I bought my wheels from says I don't need a hub rings. The new wheels I bought has 73.1mm and the stock is 67.1mm. Do you think I need to buy hub rings?

I got a good deal on a set of 2010 Challenger wheels with tires 225/60/18. I was thinking of installing them on my 2010 jeep patriot. I've test fitted one on the Patriot and it fits nicely. I'll have to get different lugs as the Jeep lugs are not long enough for full tightness. The wheel hub is 71.5mm Patriot is 67.1mm. I think rings are a good idea for safety and ride comfort. Also the Patriot is not four wheel drive. I would appreciate your input! Got the set for 80.00, and the tires are like new.

Can you put washers on your hub studs.? If lugnuts leave a thread gap of one or two threads Et lugnuts came up short,deep rim wheel holes.

I bought some wheels I really like online. Both are 5 x 1 14.3‘s however I have a 66.1 bore and these wheels are 63.4. Everything I’ve seen including your video shows how to make a larger hub fit on a smaller one using the rings.Is there a way to make a smaller one adapt to fit on a larger one such as wheel adapters or spacers? I do like the look of a wider stance. I hope this makes sense, I’m just learning this stuff. Thank you.

Great video! I have a 1975 Camaro I am trying to take the wheels off of my 2017 Camaro. The lugs line up perfectly but the center doesn’t seem wide enough to fit over the dust cap or bore. Every time I try it pushed the center cap off of the rim. Please help lol! The 1975 is 5x120.7 and the 2017 is 5x120

Your explanation makes good sense. Basically lug centric wheels only need the rings for those who are either too lazy, or don't know how to properly torque the lugs down. It would help however to have good quality lugs and studs for tighter torque, instead of 100 lbs, 150 lbs would give it more friction force between the hubs and wheels using quality studs ans lugs, not some cheap aftermarket china crap that could break... just sayin.
Higher torque spec is not always better. Over torquing the lugs can be problematic. Just follow manufacturer spec
