I definitely fall into the camp of preferring Zero Mission. However, and it always feels super weird plugging my own stuff, if you haven't watched my video on Fusion I'd be really curious to know your thoughts. There's a lot about Fusion that is often ignored, overlooked, or underappreciated. Playing through it with a more critical approach made me acknowledge so much more than I ever had done previously.

Metroid is the absolute King, or maybe Queen would be more accurate, of "learn through gameplay". It so wonderfully impressed me just how well this philosophy was executed upon the entire series, even with more narrative departures like Fusion.
Man I wish I could've fully played this game as a kid. Friend of mine had a GBA with it in elementary school and he'd let me play it on the playground sometimes.
It's still an absolute blast to play through. If you get the opportunity to give it a shot again somehow it's well worth it. It's definitely one of the best.
Man...the moment I saw Samus in a blue and white suit, time stopped and I thought "holy shit this is after fusion, this is METROID 5" and then the text flashed on the screen. My jaw was on the floor. Dread was not perfect, but damn was it fantastic.
There are slight variations but only very slight. Until Samus Returns that is. That's definitely got quite a bit different from the other 2D encounters and borrows some mechanics from Prime as well.

Great stuff! I'm playing through Zero Mission right now for the second time. My first was back in the 2000s. I'm staying up way too late playing an adventure platformer, but the exploration and rewards just sucks you in. You really should give Metroid II: Samus Returns (for the 3DS) a whirl. It is a totally different experience compared with AM2R, which is brilliant in its own right. For me, both were wonderful 2D Metroid experiences that examined the same events (Samus's metroid extermination) in different ways. Edit: Oh. You already did... Well played, sir.
LOL, happy to see you found the Samus Returns video. I'm very happy I played both different versions of Metroid 2. VERY different approaches to the classic and it was a cool experience. That's cool to hear you're revisiting Zero Mission. I really do think it holds up insanely well. While it's not Metroid, I too am getting kept awake too late with a game right now that I tend to start up as I lay down for the day. Greak Memories of Azur is the game. It's pretty neat.
I've always felt Zero Mission to be like a semi-prequel of Super Metroid (particularly in Crateria and some parts of Chozodia having references to the Wrecked Ship) even before I read the interview where Sakamoto said that the R&D1 team initially wanted to remake Super but he thought it would be better to introduce the new fans to the story of the first game with an extra surprise after Mother Brain. The Zero Suit and Chozodia parts are kind of a midquel to Metroid II (or Prime) in a way.
I think the reason zero mission has the chozo statues is because its on the game boy advance, so your mean to go somewhere and do something before you put the game down
You definitely have a point. I don't always touch on platform specific design decisions mostly because that's not how most people are going to experience them today. The other side to this though is that Zero Mission came out during a time where games did just start to throw you the waypoint on where to go. We saw this within the Metroid series at the same with Fusion, and even within the console Prime series. I do agree that the decision worked well on a handheld platform, but it was also just becoming a common design choice in the industry at that time. It's hard to know which of the 2 reasons was the primary one but I'm leaning towards it just being a combination of the two.

People seem to prefer this to Fusion but I’ve never felt that way. I like how fusion has a story and unraveling mystery / world
