Miyamoto saying he's proud of you is like Kermit asking how everyone is doing.
It unlocked some stuff A LOT of people were repressing.
    Lotta emotions there 🤣

Excellent video! Kingdom battle is one of my favourite games and one of the few I bothered to 100%
Can't wait for the game of the year sequel to come out later this month.

Thank you so much! I also can't wait. Sparks of Hope looks like such a substantial improvement over Kingdom Battle.

The Miyamoto paper Mario thing is incorrect, that’s actually intelligent systems responsible for that, he’s perfectly fine with that, plus he didn’t even work on the other games in the series

I'm not sold on that. Between previous interviews such as the famous one from Wired that started the whole "Miyamoto hates story" bit, and the interviews surrounding previous Paper Mario entries from Intelligent Systems themselves, and previous interviews with people such as Jez San of Argonaut, and comments from Rare themselves, Miyamoto is/was typically incredibly involved in a lot of dev cycles, especially Mario game development especially with 2nd and 3rd party games. The Origami King interview with Int Sys for example is a wonderful insight to Miyamoto's design influence on that series, both for the better and for worse. Nintendo's influence on Paper Mario, specifically Miyamoto, has been stated directly by key players like Tanabe.
There are also a load of interesting comments made by Miyamoto himself, as well as other sources such as "Iwata Asks" about how story even in the core Mario games is continually pushed by Takashi Tezuka while continually being resisted by Miyamoto.
Intelligent Systems definitely deserves a significant portion of the criticism, but Miyamoto's design influences aren't hidden and until very recent years it has been well documented how involved Miyamoto made himself in countless 2nd and 3rd party endeavors. This video even discusses that slightly but something I left out is that Davide Soliani reported that he and his team had to give weekly updates to Miyamoto to have verified and approved. Mainly since around 2015 - 2017 it appears Miyamoto has taken a significantly looser grip on development production, but his influence on Intelligent Systems for example is hardly nothing.
That was way too long winded of a response. Sorry for the wall of text lol! I tend to just start talking about game stuff and don't quite know when to shut up.

From what I know, your perspective of Nintendo's allowance with their IPs seems to be misguided. Nintendo has ALWAYS been fine with letting other people handle their IPs to make games. And nowadays, that's even a really big part of their business. Intelligent Systems makes Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, and WarioWare. Retro Studios makes Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country. Next Level Games makes Luigi's Mansion, Punch-Out!!, and Mario Strikers. MercurySteam makes 2D Metroid. Camelot makes pretty much every Mario sports game, and etc. Very few Nintendo games nowadays are actually made in-house.
Nintendo's problem is sharing their IPs for multimedia. Mostly because they were so scared since the Bob Hoskins movie. It scared them enough to never do anything of that scope ever again, until of course, they announced the new Mario movie with Illumination, together with the new Super Nintendo World parks (not before cancelling a whole amount of projects they had with Netflix because of a single leak, really putting into perspective how scared they still are).
Nintendo especializes in video games, so they're totally fine letting other companies use their properties for that purpose, as long as they're exclusive to their consoles of course, because they're confident that they can assure the quality of these projects. They don't have the same confidence with other medias.

Umm, so perhaps I didn't state this correctly, but I was in no way referring to 2nd party development. The relationship between 2nd and 3rd party development is VERY different to licensing out properties. The examples you gave like IS, Retro, and Rare aren't licensing deals, but development contracts in which Nintendo has an immense power in that deal. Licensing out likenesses and properties was my primary point such as the Fatal Frame and Tekken Tag examples.
I tend to like to assume that I wasn't clear in my delivery, since that's just the most constructive viewpoint for me, so I'll totally own that I wasn't as accurate with the point I was trying to make, but hopefully the above clarifies a bit.
Also, in terms of nowadays, you're absolutely right. That was another point I was trying to make but this massive shift in just how open they are with their properties didn't come until the Wii U and 3DS era. Since then, we've had amazing titles from other developers that would normally never be involved, and I think it's awesome. I mean honestly, still just the idea that Mario and Rayman can coexist in a way that is entirely developed by Ubisoft with only approval handed by Nintendo is a pretty fascinating reality! Though it's also important to note that many of the properties they own are because of acquisition and investment rather than originally in-house creations like Kirby and Fire Emblem.
I really interested in the new movie. Teaser trailer for the movie comes out Thursday I think? I'm also glad to see Nintendo be more open with their properties in the multimedia space. I think you nailed that their fear is in that far more than anything else. Given the success of the Sonic movies especially, and the fact that "video game movies" are viewed and handled so differently, I think we have the capability to get something incredibly unique with the new film.
Love the discussion! These are easily my favorite parts of making videos is chatting like this with people. Thanks!
