I’m one of those folks who watched the video to the end (even though I had to take a break and come back). I also posted a comment. What drew me in was the title. What kept me watching was the story (even though the delivery was painfully slow and the mosquitoes 🦟 made me itchy). It validated my beliefs about healing to hear a highly trained neurosurgeon explain that some patients recovered without surgery and others continued to suffer despite surgery. My experience as an energy healer convinced me that all healing is self-healing. Sure, sometimes meds, surgery, or an energy clearing helps but it is up to us to do the work to heal. I found his story inspiring ♥️ You make excellent points, George, that a great video doesn’t need flashy editing and punchy content. A video made from the heart, that touches other hearts is gold.
I watched the whole thing because Dr. Goobie is real and authentic. I’m so happy for people who break free and are doing what they love and who want to really help people. I’ve been an RN for almost 30 years (not a neurosurgeon) but I can relate. He speaks the truth regarding the health care system. IMO
People liked it because it was RAW and authentic and unedited and people found it refreshing listening to this man talking from his soul!! Plain and simple!
I agree completely with Dr. Goobie. The "healthcare" system has become a death trap for both patients and providers alike. I am a Nurse Practitioner. Worked in "healthcare" since 2008. I have taken care of patients from the White House to top Generals of our nation at Walter Reed. I've worked in Primary Care, Psychiatry, and Neurology and it's all the same every where I go. I had to leave because you cannot be ethical or moral in our system today. Only GOD can heal us. This is happening for a reason, but we all have a choice. I choose to tell the truth. "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." Psalm 107:20
30yrs of being abused by my father for being a loser because I was a nurse aide ,very low pay. Hard work.I love Goobie because nobody needs to be told what makes a person a winner in life. Because we can not be approved by or judged by people, I always was judged. Still judged. My Father never cared for me or even acknowledged me. 😢 what a hard life to try to meet others approval. 😢❤
Goobie, MIT neurosurgeon is an honest man, calm, questioning, loving mankind and nature. He gives hope that wars, power, lies , corruption are not the essence of life. It can be simple and calm to give you the opportunity to reflect on the essentials
Agree that it was refreshing to see a video like Dr. Goobie's blow up and go viral due to his vulnerability and personal storytelling, versus the big, flashy, scripted, and highly edited videos with all the bells and whistles that we might typically associate with virality. His story really is fascinating and I'm glad he shared it-so many people are resonating with his message and journey of awakening.
Beyond him, his experience, his credentials, his achievements, his story, and his heart is the pure beauty of nature (view & sound). Many factors to consider in the success.
The important thing is he was doing the video naturally. I meant he wasn't aware of anything that you have stated. He just made the video and shared his thought literally, nothing else.
This video went viral because it was unedited, raw, as real as it can get. The majority of videos on youtube are hyper edited, filtered, with the goal of attracting as many views as possible. Dr Goobies video had no intention to go viral but it did because so many people can relate to his situation. Feeling empty at work doing jobs that don't serve out highest purpose is a major problem humanity is facing at work. The difference between him and us is that Dr Goobie had the balls to quit. Unlike the majority of us who continue to work our unfullfilling jobs even though we want to quit. HE also shares some very disturbing inconvinient observations about the medical profession that has the potential to harm the established order of the medical field. Very courageous for Dr Goobie to share his observations and his life so openly.
Guts, yes, probably. But he would have the luxury of presumably a huge amount of savings/investments from neurosurgery, maybe more than most people might save in their entire lives.
I went to the video half way and watched to the end. I agree, it was sometimes painful to watch him stumbling for words and repeating himself. But clearly his sincerity, authenticity and courage to let go and his evident happiness in not being a prisoner to a paycheck hating every minute of it struck a nerve and I'm not surprised. "A man and his dog alone in the mountains" is also a kind of myth - maybe an American one or also a European one, maybe universal. The fact that his independence does not include obligation to children and even his wife - who is doing her own thing - I think is a male ideal. The loner, the independent adventurer, the freedom of the wild. All of that is actually baked into the American male mythos. At first I thought what people were responding to was his critique of the medical system but I now think it's the male who broke free from "domestication" and returned to his Lone Ranger nature. Hiyo Silver! But he is not macho, he's very sweet and sensitive and I like him a lot.
Sharing to others and especially other social medias must be a huge boost in the algorithm. I could see a lot of people wanting to share his story. Also, we always have to consider help from "click farms" could help any video to take off initially. I'm just guessing, of course. It is a great story that makes sense of the horrors that are the modern "Healthcare industry". I hope your video does great as well 🙏
Because, so many of us, growing up from child to teenage to adult were told by my father I was a loser, I would not amount to anything in my life, I picked the worst career and he never wanted to talk to me when I visited my mother and father, than ,Father told me I was a lousy cook and I lived off of my twin sister. Called me munner. How could I be a loser when I worked age 16 on up and became a nursing assistant state certified and been doing longterm care skilled, subacute rehab, alzheimers, dementia, aids, glioblastoma patients, hospice , quadraplegics....?I worked hard with moody coworkers, RNs, DONs,some combative patients , that kicked me in my throat or strangle me, pull my hair
I doubt many of those 7M people actually watched the entire video. Can a video go "viral" as long as people watch more than 7 seconds? Maybe I'll make a 48-minute video about why I gave up a successful teaching career. Sorry, I'm feeling cynical today. I'm glad he found himself and loves nature but I'm not sitting watching a 48-minute video about it. Good luck to him.
Agree that you might want to make that video too Michael! It would certainly be more interesting to watch you. As for whether people watched this other boring video, maybe not 7 million but my goodness it's got 400k likes alone, so at least that many people watched enough to like it. (And about 52k comments!)
Thank you for this video, George. Interesting to hear about the other options on TH-cam besides from super hype videos (ones I don’t care about, but that I think are the new alternative for “watching television” - which I never really did either. It’s just entertainment to not have to think about anything).
He had maybe a hundred subs prior to that. Those hundreds or 1k views are likely from the 7 million viewers who wanted to see what else he put out there
Great points. Here are mine to add: 1) His title creates a ton of curiosity 2) In the intro, he keeps building this curiosity loop ("I did it for 20 years, then I quit, and nobody could understand", etc.) - he intentionally or unintentionally sucks you in with dramatism. 3) The mountain and sound of water stream are not to be underestimated. We are hard-wired to stare at beautiful scenes. It's literally linked to our survival. 4) At the 1:33 minute mark he's saying he's "still trying to sort out his thoughts". People LOVE that stuff. From my experience, when I share in real time what I'm going through and how I'm figuring out in my own life, people pay attention. This means his video's intro has more retention than average, which means the algorithm 100% gave it a push. I didn't even get to the 2 minute mark on his video, so this is what I have for now. IF I do watch the whole thing (I doubt it, but heck, maybe I will as a case study 😅) I will come back and add my thoughts.
Thank you for this! Very good observations. About the natural scenery -- since that's what his channel is mostly about, it is on brand. I've experimented with pretty backgrounds for my videos, and although maybe it pleases the eye, I wonder if it takes away from the potency of my message and/or attracts some of the less-right-fit crowd.
@@GeorgeKaoCommunity You're absolutely right. Although it would be great for views, it's not necessarily the best approach to attract the right people. Great breakdown, George!
Constantly comparing Asian to other minorities got old quick in this video. ASIA is a big continent plenty of medical opportunities especially for American Asian therefore Asian actually have way more opportunities. I watched the video and it was a great video. Coming from a medical man myself
It was jaw-dropping. the content was jaw-dropping and I still cannot wrap my head around it because we all want to just be off worrk so bad and just be a good mom and be there for important events but we cannot because we have to still keep working or where are we going to live with our kids. Yes, we are all so envious and we are all so shocked. Contrast this with PBS American FAmilies over 30 years--two families that lost their well paying factory jogs when the plant went out of business. they did not have an education--struggled endlessly and worried about their kids living in poor neighborhoods with gangs. they kept working, working working at low paying jobs without benefits--one lost their house. I still am in shock from both programs. He could find a rewarding career in something like public health and, indeed, help may folks but i think there is more to his story. I feel like he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Also, I want to go hiking in some of those beautiful areas. I am still in shock.
George, agree. He IS boring & repetitive. It was challenging to finish the entire video, but I did. He didn’t say anything spectacular. He was honest and authentic, and was able to take a big leap to leave his esteemed profession. That’s admirable. It seems with so many views that there’s a lot of people craving to do or to be simpler in life. Perhaps this is why it caught so much attention. Honestly, it wasn’t a fantastic video. 🤷♀️
I disagree. I recall the video popped up in my TH-cam feed and I was curious about it so I clicked. I did wonder why he wasn't getting to the point sooner but I was hooked and ended up modifying my plans to watch the entire video in one go. And then I shared it with multiple people. And watched it again while sharing it with my brother and mom while we ate dinner.
I saw quite a few comments with Christianity references. So maybe an older, very US centric (because of your high level of Christianity), empathetic audience? Be nice if it is possible to get a demographic breakdown of audience. The 'quitting' story is the powerful one, and resonates with probably most of us (who doesn't want to quite their day job?). The sincerity creeps through, although he is obviously neurodivergent. The male loner in wilderness would have attracted another audience segment. I am on the hunt for authentic narratives, and getting away from steriod and boxtox infused influencers or videos polished to the nanometer scale. But while I had a very positive response to this video, I could not watch much of it at all.
I guarantee many people watching him and following him have been victims of doctors. People can't hear truth, they need entertainment. The comments about his video being boring is the problem with people. They need excitement. People are broken and don't know it.
Another one from him that is unbelievably viral -- and boring -- compared to most YT vids! Here it is-- th-cam.com/video/27_EQbVnhiE/w-d-xo.html
I Don't see Dr .Goobie's videos boring ,it is very inspiring and authentic
The doctor gave us raw emotion no pretence. His honesty was refreshing
Because he spoke from his heart. There was no pretense, just raw emotions unlike anything we ever witness even in real life.

He is sincere , smart and very likeable

Sincerest is awkward for some, Doobie did right and all it matter to the individual. He is and still a good neurosurgeon compare to others
I agreed with Dr Goobie and Doobie

Very good point! Yes after watching his recent video story about interbeing, my wife and I are fans now: th-cam.com/video/lMXbg_0Ee9U/w-d-xo.html
Dr Goobie said that MIT was full of Asian students which made him feel very comfortable there

Good content!!👏 I agree on your take
It’s because it has value and there isn’t much of the same topic that can be found

Goobie.... is relatable, yes he has some boring ones, but the one where he is on the couch on mushrooms. Loser.
Human-interest story in the context of our health care crisis, presented in an unadorned style, and he is honest, which is rare in our time.
