  • Florence Pugh is a revelation. That's the tweet.
I love this movie so much. It's a beautiful story with an incredible cast. And I wanted to watch it again. So I'm doing a reaction/commentary.
Little Women is a 2019 American coming-of-age period drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig. It is the seventh film adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. It chronicles the lives of the March sisters-Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth-in Concord, Massachusetts, during the 19th century. It stars an ensemble cast consisting of Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, and Chris Cooper.

This movie truly made me understand why Laurie belongs with Amy and not Jo. Jo never truly felt a romantic connection with Laurie, she simply confused her desire for companionship with love. Amy truly cared for Laurie in that way, despite her preexisting cynical view of love.

What's interesting about Jo and Friedrich's combo about her stories is that it shows how he is the first person to actually criticize her work knowing that's what she needs to become a better writer. He is being honest, not rude, he knows these stories do not match her talent. She gets mad because someone she likes scrutinizes her work (also Laurie wouldn't have ever done that). Loved your reaction and commentary, you're very lovely!

Okay no, when I watched the first images of this movie I was really excited for the cast, specially Saiorse Ronan, but I wasn't expecting THIS. I was shocked at the end. Greta did a great job with the structure and the pacing, and I'm in love with that final scene, with the making of the book and that sort of epilogue.

I don't think the criticism over Jo's work was an asshole move of his part. He was honest and he's an foreign, which in itself can complicate communication. She bothered me so much in this scene. I know critics are hard to receive, but if she wasn't willing to hear an honest opinion she shouldn't have asked for it. (She reminds me so much of myself I got annoyed with her most of the time, seriously.)

Yeah, English as a language is hard to make more polite if you're used to be able to just use a polite pronoun and now everything's polite. "U heeft gelijk" vs "je hebt gelijk" in Dutch both mean "you are right", but one uses "U" which is a pronoun for one you want to be polite. I can't do that in English, change one pronoun and be done. You have to add modal verbs and extra sentences, you have to dress up a request with a whole conversation to make it polite. Just let me slap an "U" on it and be done, damnit!
In the books I'm pretty sure he's German, which would have a formal pronoun as well, "Sie". :)
And that's not even talking about how you do critiques in various languages. In English it's all "very interesting, different, I love your enthusiasm" which if someone said that in Dutch they would most definitely mean that positively and there wouldn't be a veiled "this is terrible and I'm being very polite about this" meaning underneath it.
All of that combined with him wanting her to actually be a better writer and not write the sensationalist murder/kidnapping/drama stories that she was selling means he's earnest, honest, and in her eyes not a bit polite about it. 😁

  • @Callmekatielee

I adore both this version and the 1994 film. To me they both evoke so much emotion, and serve different purposes in their adaptation.
1994 is my childhood storybook version that’s more classic and historical. The 2019’s reconstruction of the plot is the modern adaptation and viewpoint of this story we needed, brilliant emphasizing the emotional beats of the story in a new and poignant way.
I’m so glad to have both Winona Ryder and Saoirse Ronan’s Jo March in my life. And I’m glad to have seen Greta Grewig’s beautiful vision brought to life with such passion.

@@thebestofstephx What I liked about Florence In Outlaw King is how she can take a role that's normally glanced over, such as the loyal wife, and give it more dimension, such her relaxing by the staircase settling in or bonding with Roberts daughter.
I Also liked how we see an arranged between her and king Robert, but both characters do show genuine respect for on another despite being total strangers. Unlike other arrange marriages onscreen like lady Macbeth.
She's actually alot like a young Cattlyn Stark in game of thrones, even resembles her abit.

In 2019, I saw this movie with my friend, thinking it was gonna be a remake of the 1994 version (which my friend hadn't seen). I was shocked at the storytelling technique that they used and I felt bad for my friend because she was not familiar with the story and the movie expects that you already know the story. So a while later, I showed her the 1994 version and she asked, "Does Laurie make a dramatic entrance in this one?"
I grinned and said, "Oh, YES!"

Burning the book means she burnt the only existing copy of that book. There isn't another version to use. Jo will never get that book back.
That shawl is often called a capelet, or pelerine and you can make them very easily if you can sew, and they also still exist, you can buy them.
So, sitting in hoops is pretty easy, they're flexible, and collapsible, so you can just sit down no issue. Same with going through doors, or past people, the hoops just bend out of the way, or they swing out of the way a little.
The epilogue is more or less the sequel. Jo has a school full of children, they accept all students, adopt a few too. So the other versions end where the book ends, more or less. This version ends with a scene that's basically from a different book. So it's not so much that L.M. Alcott intended her book to end differently, more than this movie adds things from the next book.

I’ve only seen bits of the movie but let me tell you Amy and Laurie are not soulmates like- I just personally think for Laurie and jo it was right person wrong time. I’ve never seen the end of the movie so if anyone go married or anything but I like to imagine that jo and Laurie get together but this is all my opinion
