I agree, alliums are fantastic. My favourite, by a mile, is Purple Rain. It has the best qualities of both it's parents. Allium cristophii and purple sensation. Tall as the latter, and huge heads with metallic sheen as the former. Love it!
Sarah, I grow scallions, shallots, many types of onions & garlics to sell ... if I plant ornamental alliums, do u think they will cross pollinate n make the other edible alliums inedible? I once planted an inedible gourd beside a squash and I couldn't eat the squash!
I've had many alliums for about 3 years now, and I now also have allium leaf miner devastating my onions and leeks when previously they caused no problems. Is that a coincidence, or are the alliums the attraction to the pest?

Humph! Here in South eastern Australia I spent a small fortune (relatively speaking) on various Alliums (I love them) BUT ne'er a one appeared! Humph! This Autumn I planted Elephant Garlic!
I'm in Perth, can't get allium bulbs or seeds cause of the agricultural restrictions that apply to WA. But I just found some seeds from a guy that sells on gumtree. Hopefully will they will sprout for me and flower in the future😂
Good Luck! You could always try elephant garlic too. I think Allium seeds will need to be cold stratified (I think that is the term) to assist with germination. Good Luck!
