I totally agree with your ideas about gimbal use: use it when you need it and learn to do quick things handheld. A tip to do pan and tilt: I use my body to move the camera, the torso in particular. That leaves the arms to just stabilize the horizontal shifts, and it gets even better if you use the viewfinder. For tilt, you can sit your elbows on your stomach and move just the forearm. If you do your movement with your arms it isn’t gonna be straight, because you need an anchor point. I don’t know if you were doing it, it’s not very clear by the images, but I suggest to try it.
so does it have active follow ie lock onto a person and follow them around ... I read something about smart follow ... is that like active track on the DJI??
Lumix's IBIS is fantastic, but Gimbal is a gear just for stabilizing footage. This video is a great example of both "the need for a gimbal" and "the impressive stabilization performance of Lumix cameras".

I went from a S5ii to a fx30 & a6700 & zve1 and then back to lumix with the S9 😅

What is the crop factor on the highest level of s9 stabilization?
Different tools for different needs. If you are a filmmaker, you will need both gimbal and a handheld rig, you can't just use one for everything.
Exactly!
Knowing the essence of products is important!
