    EDIT: I've clarified with Audiio that my copyright claim was a mistake. That claim, along with the FAQ for Lifetime members and OTT services, sent me in the wrong direction, apologies to anyone for the confusion I created!
    My Original message below for reference:
    Here an Audiio lifetime member: BE AWARE that Lifetime subscription doesn't cover TH-cam content, they nicely hide it away at the bottom of the page. Very shady.

      Appreciate the heads up. So are you saying that if a royalty-free track from Audiio is used in a TH-cam video, there's a risk that in a few years it could be a copyright infringement if TH-cam changes its rules?

      That said, where possible, your personal recommendations of what to consider and what to avoid are really appreciated.

    The one thing I bring with me on every shoot (almost as much as I bring a camera) is my wind up extension cord reels. They come in SOOOO clutch and have saved my butt on so many occasions when the location doesn't have power nearby and you need to power more powerful lights that don't use Vmount batteries or even for splitting one outlet into many outlets to charge gear during lunch breaks and such. I almost never go to a gig without bringing 2 extension cord reels. They see more use than everything other than my camera.

    I can vouch for Osee monitors, affordable, super bright and color accurate. Set up is a bit of a PITA since it doesn't have a touchscreen but you really only have to set up your presets once. The Megamon 15" is also the best bang for buck for 1st ACs or Director's monitor.

      Likewise! I have the Osee T7 and boy what a difference from my cheap AndyCine. Agree, the touchscreen can be a bit fiddly when setting up but otherwise it's a great monitor. I just wish there were better options for cages. Tons of options for Feelworld but the only option of seen for Osee T7 is the one by Nitze and the cheapest I've seen it is $140 CAD

    I appreciate your content. I've been making documentaries for 20 years, specializing in nomadic tribes in West Africa. When shooting, I travel with my backpack and 15 kilos of equipment, plus my tripod. It's hard for me to carry a lighting kit when I'm traveling in the middle of the desert without a 4x4 car and no electricity supply. The only lightweight option is a Westcott-type flexible LED panel and flexible solar panels to recharge the V-Mount batteries.

      really great option is ziyun molus x100 it is compact and powerful, the only downside it needs an adapter to be able to use it with larger modifiers and it is not weather resistant but you can power it from a power bank which could be useful for your type of work. I pair mine with aputure mini dome and you can create a solid fill light in most of conditions. I can fit in the small carry bag that comes with mini dome reflectors a small light stand and the adapter to mount the moles x100 to the octa- box.

    Just bough a BMD G2 (and an alt cine back 👍) it is amazing. My camera rig (including ssd batteriescand screen) cost me 1500€. And for me that is amazing.
    Last time I used a professional camera it was a.sony with huge tapes that we rented for a shoot. That was way bigger, heavier, cumbersome and with way less picture quality. And renting it for a week cost more. In that sense it is a great time for creators.
    If a video has a good story and good sound it will be watched even if the picture quality is a bit below par. If the audio is beliw par people will leave asap.
    Also bought a few godox lights, no complaints.. yet. But still setting up. Also not the brightest ones by a long way, bit they will get used in a controlled environment. I do wish that not only DMX controlled lights were Home assistant compatible. That would make automation so much easier.

    Luc, I'd really love to see a comparison or just your thoughts on the laowa S35 17-50 vs the Fuji 18-55 zooms. The form factor of the Laowas are pretty crazy, but I've shot a lot on the fuji 19-90 cabrio and really love the way that lens looks. The laowas seem a bit clinical?
    I know your channel covers larger filmmaking ideas but would be great to hear your thoughts as I'm in asia and there's no where near me that stocks cine equipment, and there aren't many doc shooting fuji owners on youtube with your expertise :)
    Additionally just your thoughts on the C400 and canon in general. Im an ex canon shooter and have moved to sony, but still own some canon glass and honestly quite miss the canon IQ and general shooting experience. Do you think canon can make a comeback in the doco world? I'd love to grab a C400 (my A cam is currently an FX3 while I waited for the next big release), but I know most doc style productions strictly hire sony shooters these days.
    Thanks a bunch :)

      I’ve never used the S35 laowas, but based on the FF Ranger lenses I would agree with that they’re on the more “clean” side. Maybe the s35 are different though, so don’t quote me on that! The cabrio is a beast, but a bit heavy - the MK version are perfect in my opinion as long as you’re ok with s35. Unless they break/get stolen, they’re going to be my go tos for a very long time. As for canon, they’re great. The camera looks fantastic, but I’m so deep into the Sony ecosystem at this point it’s unlikely I’ll change. Maybe I’ll get a chance to use it on someone else’s project though, and if so I’ll share my thoughts!

    Buying gear on credit card debt it's insane, but you can take a personal loan at the bank that with a decent interest rate will allow you to acquire what you NEED and keep renting the rest. But for traveling gigs renting isn't always convenient, so take your time and don't get into unnecessary debt.

  • @WhySteve

    Talking about how some of the gear is more accessible than back in the day makes me think how crazy it is that a small 4k cam with a fast 35mm, wireless mic pack, gimbal or tripod and molus X100 will be good enough for most scenarios. A good laptop with Davinci Resolve free, hell even studio is cheap, in the right hands can make for a professional end result, even for big productions. And it all fits into ONE camera bag! I mean that's really stripping down an entire production crew with gear rentals and studio space and turns an entire $500000 production into a $5000 guerilla MACHINE haha. Oh yes, and then there's AI doing some of the work too! Again, keyword "IN THE RIGHT HANDS", but still, just that it is possible, is a crazy thought.

    Meh. I'm still figuring out what side of my Pixel has the camera on it, so I am lightyears away from some of these tasty things you wave around, Luc. I walk away with gems of your information, and may not have/get some of this, its important to be familiar with it. As you pointed out, tech always gets cheaper, and I know that the less I have to work with makes me stronger. I may piss and moan, but it makes me resourceful and sharpens my vision to possibilities.
    I'm also completely sold on buying used equipment. I go to KEH because they are so good at hold handing and teaching me things rather than just mailing me my purchases. Have you talked about those possibilities? I'd be interested in your thoughts about buying used equipment from rental dealers. I am all about cheap and cheap as wise as I can buy it.
    I would love to take advantage of rental services like Audiio, but since I am still working on how to open a new project and save it on Resolve😁🙄 that's still down the road for me.
    An audio/copyright issue that has me stumped--I've been told not to even attempt at writing your own music, somehow it will be made into a copyright litigation. OK, fair enough. But could a creator make one's own single tone sounds manipulated, to add or to denote the action/feelings of a scene?
    I'm sure you sensibly don't answer questions about law, a wise move, but on the odd chance I might catch you in a moment of weakness: some thoughts on a purely imagined action such as this? I used to work at Kinkos, back when it was relevant, and I had no choice but to play the copyright police with sly businesspeople. That's when I learned how to use my Adult Voice to get customers to listen to me. "Who's your boss?!"
    "God. Next?"

      In a pinch, I can use my Rode NTG3 indoors, but I generally use that 416 clone outdoors. Half the price of the MKH 416.

    Hey, Luc, if I could I would love to join on your trip to East Africa if you need another AC, PA or grip. I grew up in East Africa (my family lived in Uganda for 10 years and the last 4 I spent at a boarding school in Kenya 45 minutes outside of Nairobi). However, I doubt I could afford up and traveling rn. I also am a third year film student who is trying to get on as a PA for local feature film that starts filming at the end of the month. Meeting the line producer in a few days.

    With TV still mostly in HD, and 4k still new and broadcasted in low quality because of low bandwidth internet that most people have, I think the days of needing new cameras is coming to an end. We're getting close to the parity of the 90's. You buy a betacam for 5 to 8 years and thats that. I mean, does anyone need more than an fs7? No. Do we need to replace an a7s 3 or a gh7? No. Theres just not much to gain anymore, and half the industry still uses HD cameras. I am hoping I am not wrong.
    But like, outside of 6k, 8k, 9k, 25k resolution what on earth is there to add? Really? Were at a plateau and my friends in TV say we've been there since 1080 60p was standard on all cameras lol.

      I'd stear clear, honestly. I tried them and was really disappointed. They might have changed this by now, but when I tried they didn't even have an interface to white list a TH-cam channel and instead just gave you a PDF to email TH-cam if Audiio sent you a copyright strike. There was a form for your company name and stuff but that was for generating invoices. Epidemic Soumd is the way to go imo.

    Luc, I'm wondering if you have any advice on whether or not the 5" monitor or the 7" monitor is best. Any others who know about this, I'd also love to hear from you.

    • @LucForsyth
      @LucForsyth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      for me 5” is the way to go for on camera, but that’s because I travel a ton and need minimal weight. I also have a 7” for studio shooting, but I don’t take it internationally. So it depends what you’re doing with it!

    Hi Luc, anything you can offer as to what you find problematic with Andycine monitors? I'm ready to upgrade to a new monitor (or two) and I don't want to buy the same Andycine(s) I have if you have a few words to talk me out of it, would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @LucForsyth
      @LucForsyth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      my main complaint on the Andycine I used was the poor focus peaking. All the other features are fine, but for me if the focus peaking isn’t good then it fails its main job - to help me frame and shoot better. As a doc shooter all the other stuff is nice to have, but not essential. In a studio environment it might be fine, just not for what I do!

    For monitor part, if you have limited budget, just buy a video capture card and use your cell phone as monitor.
    Monitor+ is a decent app for camera monitoring.
    Cell phone usually have larger screen than 5 inch monitors and don't require external power.

    Filming making gear that's actually a good investment??? Monitor, audio, lighting, tripod, these aren't good investments. These are things you NEED to make a video. Sounds like the title for this video is incorrect. Not trying to be a D, but what if I had a video for painting and said equipment that's actually a good investment and then I went on to tell you about paint brushes, canvas and paint.

    • @FilmLover-u2n
      @FilmLover-u2n 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are being a D, because all you NEED to make a video in reality is a camera and lens. These items he reviewed compliment the procedure of Filmmaking and makes the results better if you know what you’re doing. People like you are negative and live on being negative, if you don’t like something don’t watch it especially if you’re going to comment nonsense smh.
