    • @dragonreborn56789
      @dragonreborn56789 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Even the "powers based on gods" argument is pretty flawed. Mercury was god of travel, not bubbles. Uranus was the sky, not the god of earthquakes, Mars is the god of war, not fire... Apparently there WAS a Sailor Saturn, who held "power over life and death", which, I guess you could argue is an extreme extrapolation of Time, which is what Saturn was, but that's kind of a stretch.
      It seems much more like it was a combination of the two things. Sailor Venus having love-powers makes sense from the godly perspective (unless you're Captain Planet, in which case "heart is the fifth element"), but Mercury being associated with water was just pure elemental stuff.
      And then, of course, there's Sailor Moon, whose powers were... "Let's call it 'moon-something'. Or refer to whatever magic item she's wielding this episode. Or both".
      It's pretty safe to say that "elemental powers" is a reasonable facsimile of what was actually going on, though. Lightning, water, fire, earth, those are all elemental powers, so it's not unreasonable to call them so.

    • @ellaser93
      @ellaser93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Um actually...They are elements. They are based on the Asian elements with Jupiter having Wood based powers (because lightening = wood for some reason. And Pluto is the supposed element of Time.

      To be fair there are multiple references to Cho and other Asian characters speaking, they just aren't in quotes, but are being paraphrased or spoken of instead. Also, 7 lines is not accurate at all and a gross exaggeration even if the Asian populace is still largely underrepresented. In book five on 2 pages alone Cho Chang has 9 separate lines during the mistletoe scene and at least 42 lines in the book that I found.

    • @Peter_Cordes
      @Peter_Cordes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@stephenrhoades8686 - "lines" sounds like it's talking about the movies. That's how you measure dialogue in movies, and it matters even more whether a character is speaking their own lines, or other characters are discussing a conversation they had. On the page, everything's just text. On screen, a different actor will deliver the lines.
      It makes sense that condensing a book to a movie needs to leave some things out, and Harry's relationship with Cho was always sort of background scenery for the main story even in the books. With only a bit of character growth / development for Harry coming out of it. (Been a long time since I read the books, but I think that's accurate). So it's depressingly easy to see how Asian minor characters get reduced to even less significant in the movie version.

    Um, actually, the "Deckmaster" tag served a legitimate purpose when it was first created. When Wizards created MtG, they planned on making several different trading card games, and "Deckmaster" was the brand they would put on all their games to unite them and identify them as Wizards of the Coast games. They included it on MtG cards, Net Runner cards, and Vampire: the Eternal Struggle cards. Over time, they decided it wasn't necessary, but MtG is very popular and people use cards from all the different sets in their games, so they can't change the design of the back now without opponents being able to tell what kind of cards you have in your hand (without opaque card sleeves). Uhm actually, the "Deck Master" tag at the bottom of the cards was supposed to have a purpose; head designer Mark Rosewater explains in a 2009 article*:
    "The original idea when Wizards created Magic was that they would produce a whole bunch of different trading card games (TCGs). To identify Wizards of the Coast TCGs they came up with a brand they planned to put on the back of each Wizards TCG. Deckmaster was that brand. It was, in fact, used on numerous TCGs, such as Jyhad (later Vampire: The Eternal Struggle) and Netrunner. In the end, the branding never quite caught on and Wizards stop using it on their TCGs. So why is it still there? Because we wanted the back of every Magic card to look the same and thus were unwilling to change the back."
    So in a way it's a vestigial feature of the Magic card back these days.

It was a little tongue-in-cheek, but based in the general lack of anxiety seen in male students, who didn't mind being wrong in front of others as much as they may want to participate. Once the pressure is relieved, the female students would generally not be as worried about sharing their own thoughts.

    This isn't a correction, but rather an addition of knowledge:
    The "Deckmaster" thing was an umbrella trademark that Wizards of the Coast was using for their various card games. They eventually dropped the concept, but the design for the card back on MtG was locked, so it's still there despite being effectively pointless now. The problem is, if they decided to drop it, it would narrow down, even slightly, what the card could or could not be to a player's opponent, assuming they weren't using protective card sleeves with opaque backs, which many players do.
    Despite this, they, for some reason, decided that printing double-faced cards was an option, despite those being even more obvious. *shrugs*

    Um, Actually the "Deckmaster" logo is leftover from when Wizards of the Coast was going to make different series of card games. Magic: the Gathering, Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, and BattleTech were all "Deckmaster" games

    I instantly knew BAMF because of how much they use it on Critical Role

    Legitimately probably the best episode of this I've seen while binging all these. All three women here were delightful, charming, and funny (as opposed to trying to be funny)

      I have seen so many comments where people piss all over trans women, fat women, black women, women who don't fit beauty standards that when I see a comment like this it just feels...fucking horrific. There are so.many men going "oh, this woman who fits beauty standards is delightful". I just.... fucking hate it. Not your fault, dunno nothing about you, but fuck men in general.

      @@thedanespeaks Yeah there was nothing sinister about my comment. All three of these people, who happen to be women, were extremely entertaining and a delight to watch.

    I was shocked that none of them knew the BAMF. In my opinion it's the most iconic onomatopoeia other than, like, POW.

    Um Actually, most historians believe that it is very unlikely that Charles Dodgeson (Lewis Carroll's real name) did drugs. He was a quite conservative lecturer and academic at Oxford. He did, however, reportedly suffer from migraines which caused hallucinations. otherwise known as ....Alice in Wonderland syndrome

    When Matt Mercer is on: Trap is chill and fine.
    When three women are on: Trap is nervous as heck.
    Great job, Trap. Sounding great up there.

    What a good episode. As fun as it is watching people stumble through it, it's nice when all the contestants are killing it.
    Plus this is the first episode i knew (or had a reasonable chance of knowing) most of the answers.
