I was instructed as LEO that Weaver stance allow you to blade your body forming a lower profile silhouette. This is good when not wearing-body armor, but compromising if wearing armor because it exposes the side which is the weakest point in the armor. Triangle, full-frontal is preferred when wearing armor.

Stance is personal preference. You can hit the bullseye at 25-30 yards out while doing a one hand handstand as long as you understand trigger control and front sight focus. And of course have really good handstand balance.

I feel like in a self defense situation the weaver is the way to go because you minimize your silhouette and you're more able to maneuver. Also while firing a rifle you're basically at weaver so you can transfer all that muscle memory and trigger control into pistol skills with a little different head position.

I was just at the range shooting some of my new pistols. I did what came naturally to me , now I know it’s called the Weaver stance. And I was plugging some targets at a decent distance for me anyway. Then the guy that works there comes over and shows me the way that you see in most the videos, isosceles triangle etc. My shots went to hell. My wife even made fun of me when I got home and she saw my targets. I came home, found a Hickok45 video, and he shoots modified Weaver, pretty much same as me. I think any instructor should look at where are you are hitting the target, if you’re having a lot of problems, you’re way off, make suggestions. If you’re doing pretty good for someone who is just an average person who hopes he never has to shoot his pistol in anger, leave well enough alone!

Both stances working fine. The problem is that most videos, including this one doesn't go in detail how they're achieved. Both shouldn't feel really uncomfortable. Check out the videos from the late great Ron Avery on stance and what to tense up and what stays relaxed. I'm comfortable in both and I'm not sticking my butt out.

Also, it helps you instinctively position your full body weight in just such a way to counteract the worst effects of recoil in a split second. The gun fires, the force travels back through your arms and then back towards your firmly planted back foot. The isosceles looks fine for stationary shooting, but I feel like you’re planting both of your feet down and robbing yourself of flexibility.

My teacher did ask me many times to take the shooting stance with with an empty gun then He did kick me with his leg in to my chest until I did not fall on my back. After that I was allowed to load the gun and proceed to the target zone.

That's not the Weaver Stance as taught by Jeff Cooper. He taught to bring the gun to you with bent elbows and the firing forearm close to the body. It's very similar to the rifleman's stance with the hands placed together. Personally I think it's because he was nearsighted and couldn't see the front sight if it was farther.

    • @cynic5581
      @cynic5581 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Stoner mcstoned +Alex Delarge Depends on what you are shooting. Unlike pistol shooting you'll find a distinction between tactical style training and sport shooting (clays) / hunting (birds).
Since this can be subjective what works for me with tactical shooting is a weaver stance with your feet to help mitigate recoil. Dominate hand elbow in. Non dominate hand arm extended. Shoulders flat to the target.
With clays, left foot leading the target or pointing at the break point. Dominate hand elbow out to help rotate. Non dominate hand arm extended. Shoulders generally end up flat to the target as it breaks.
This will vary wildly between shooters. I'd recommend either professional training (its a ton of fun) or trying to imitate professionals so you minimize developing bad habits.

Sorry champ, but that IS NOT a correct arm position for the Weaver stance. Not even close.

Thank you for mentioning that. A retired FBI agent even told me an instructor told him he had to hold a stick between his bicep and ribcage for a proper Weaver. No one ever saw a picture of Col. Jeff Cooper??

My instinct is to assume an "athletic" position as I feel like it's good to be able to move. Feet further than shoulder width apart and parallel are decidedly "unathletic." If you were a defender in any sport in this position, you would be "beaten."

I used the weaver stance yestarday at the shooting range, the instruction told me to only use the isosceles stance and indicated that there is no other correct stance. He repeated himself 3 times after I denied changing my stance and at last let me do my shooting. Absolute clowns, won't ever visit that range again, when my friend asked if he is holding the gun properly (shooting first time in his life) the instructor just said to him "what kind of question is that" and laughed at him with his other buddy.

Handgun shooting stance is basically irrelevant and has zero impact on marksmanship. As long as you aren't falling over and can maneuver when required your stance is entirely personal preference.
New shooters should just ignore it altogether until they start shooting on the move.

    That's not the Weaver stance.

+gtrspeed5311 I noted that also. The arms should be bent, with elbows pointed downwards some.

+Humphrey Liu I believe you are correct. I think the weaver stance was found to be beneficial to people who had trouble focusing on the front sight. The pistol is pulled in until the front sight is in focus. The arms also have a push/pull tension.

Remember Newhall. Under duress shooters shoot the drill they use. Teach'm to get off the "X". Shooting paper targets from a standing position has no practical street value. Even a beginner can learn to shoot while moving from the get-go. Why make'm unlearn the stand still, kill the paper target routine ... It's either self defense combat shooting or it ain't.
