Thanks from the England! My daughter will be happy with this comment as she travels to Japan twice a year, reads and speaks Japanese! I travelled to Japan in the late 1980's and found it fascinating, friendly and clean!
The 3.0 is the one to get. The N52 2.5 has a piston ring issue that causes high oil consumption. Also the DISA valves fail. Top one is easy, bottom one means removing the intake manifold. Also there's no temp gauge, I only knew mine was running cold due to INPA. To change the electronic thermostat you might as well do the electric water pump too, horrid job and expensive parts.
I'm so sad to see you have sold the F12, as an owner myself I can attest they are incredible cars (though mine is a Diesel), but I can certainly understand why you gave it back. I would have done the same thing. It's pretty shameful of the selling garage to pretend there was nothing wrong, as they no doubt see a lot of cars, and knew really that the car was not right. Hats off to you for not giving into the temptation to name and shame them; I imagine your youtube channel was a lot of the reason why they bought it back from you, as I can't imagine they wanted to risk a public unmasking. They are just lucky you are such a gentleman, and suffered the financial loss with dignity. But watching the videos of your other BMWs will continue to give me pleasure, and you are certainly one of the most genuine and decent youtubers, I wish you the very best with the Z4 and will look forward to all the little things you do to it.
A fantastic motor that will do you very well, plenty of half a million mile examples in the world, and has a very particular mechanical symphony with the magnesium casting that is hard to beat. Very helpful tip on turning the motor over with the coils off, thank you, have been putting off changing mine as read horror stories about chain slap post change.
The slap is awful if the engine is started. I decided to never start the engine after a tensioner change ever since I did my M62 V8, it was very scary!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation One thing I will say about your year of car, have you checked its not on the recall list? 2010 -> 2011 N52's had an issue where the VANOS adjuster gear bolts, would back out / the heads would break off and cause timing issues as not able to adjust cam properly. Worth checking before it becomes a problem. Recall was this or last year if i remember rightly.
I always change the tensioners on my BMWs. N43 and N20. Can’t speak for other engines but, be aware that it is possible for the engine to skip timing while the tensioner is out on the N20. I had this and had to buy the tools to re time. I recreated the scenario with the valve cover off also.
I agree, I've changed them in all my V8's (I've had nine of them), except the F12 where it was patently impossible to get to them! There must be a lot of slack on the N20 chain to drop below the sprocket!
Around 1999 I bought a cheap E30 318iS that had been run too long on a bad tensioner. I had to change the chain, guides and sprockets at 122k miles. Went on to 215k when I replaced it with a newer low mileage example, still have it 17 years later :-)
Thanks for posting, Tim. I hope you enjoy the Z4. I have a 330i with the same N52 engine, but it’s done a few more miles. Over 220,000 miles now! Mostly between home in Berks, and Alresford where my old office was. I think I’ll take a look at the chain tensioner, I fortunately have a ratcheting 27mm spanner from doing DSC work on E39s and E46s. As you’ve alluded to these are great engines, and my favourite BMW 6 cylinder. People worry about the electric water pump, but they show a code in the DME before they fail.
Thanks! Yes, a ratchet spanner of 27mm would do the trick as long as it fitted underneath the tensioner as it is close to the casting. Still, wiggling a spanner for a couple of hours makes us look like mechanics! Good to know on the waterpump front!
Tim, excellent video as always. You have started me thinking now about the M54 engine in my March 2001 Z3 (E36/7) with only 79k on the clock. I have just changed the valve cover gasket and yes there was a little varnish although the upper chain tensioner was free when I checked. Having watched your video, I will now investigate the lower chain tensioner. For the M54 it consists of a separate body, piston, and spring so I may simply be able to clean the parts and reassemble with a new crush washer. Another job for this week….
Hi Timm , I changed this tension's spring in my BMW. I see brand new spring lenght is a little longer than used one. In engine this spring compressed alltime and this makes the "k" factor of spring decreased. After changed, it pushes timing chain better now. Rattle sound doesn't changed so much but know that it won't be problem in a short period again. For lifters rattle sound I used liqui moly additive and BMW LL01 spec 5w-40 oil. It cleaned the inside of the lifters. Then I changed my oil again after 1 year later and now engine is very very quiet. In my opinion garage queen cars have this problem more.
The longer spring is to account for chain guide wear. The spring has little to no effect on the operation, it is entirely hydraulic from the engine oil supply. Yes, lifter noise will get worse if you don't use the car!
Hello Tim, You’ve helped me with a lot of content for the E64. My E64 has the (baby) N52 engine and I’m thrilled to have been learning so much about this engine as a beginner DIY enthusiast. I’ve scanned the comments and I’ve not seen anyone address the light but of smoking you had from the right side. You’re spot on, it’s engine oil that has seeped on to the exhaust manifold or the heat shield for the manifold. The most likely culprit is the Valve Cover Gasket. Replacing that, should take care of the burning. I feel weird mentioning something your way with all your knowledge on these cars and experience etc. But I felt compelled to say something. Hope it helps. Also, it was a sad day for me when you sold the E64… and got the F12. But now you have an N52 engine I cannot wait for more content. Hello Mode_Sierra. Fortunately the smoking was from where my oil-rag wiped past the manifold on the way out. I am very lucky not to have any oil leaks at all, very unusual for me! I expect I'll get some now I am pushing the engine harder. I love the BMW N52, it's an excellent engine and so easy to work on!

First I’ve ever heard of the tensioner being an issue on the n52. The tensioner is likely to have a check valve this is why you could not compress it. This is also the reason why you don’t extend the tensioner before installation. Also it’s much better to disconnect the fuel pump fuse of injectors than the coils. Otherwise a load of fuel will get into you oil, it also wash the oil of the bores potentially causing damage to the cylinder walls.
Thanks for the comment - you must be thinking of the tensioner for the M52 which IS in two parts with a spring clip holding the piston in place. The N52 tensioner is exactly as seen in this video, it has no one-way valve and comes extended. I also explain why disconnecting the coils does not cause wash-down
I recently purchased a 2011 z4 30i n52 motor. The car runs great and only has 27000 miles on it. Should I go ahead and change out the chain tensioner or give it some more miles first? I am also using amsoil made to European specifications 0w-30.
Thanks! The 2011 N52 in the Z4 is low-pressure injectors, I physically checked that when I had the engine cover off. There are so many variants of the N52 that I have not fully understood where each is used. I'm just glad I have no turbo's and no high-pressure system!

I think your Z4 is a far better car in the long term. The N63 is far too complex and time consuming to work on in your driveway.
I agree Andrew, I could only make the F12 worse (which it did itself) whereas I can make the Z4 better - and it's great fun!
Ah ha more BMW nonsense fanny about that I need to be aware of on my wife's idiosyncratic E91 estate with the N52 engine, that she loves but I don't as I have to maintain it.
Just looking at this car the wrong way will result in a revenge malfunction later in the journey,if I very occasionally borrow it.
Yep, more BMW nonsense!
I had an N52 E91 325i and it was a disaster. I think I fixed every common E9x / N52 issue before giving up and going back to an E46.
