  • Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Friday! Today I'm helping fashion and lifestyle blogger Sarah Anne with a bedroom transformation. Sarah loves all things pink (same) so the challenge here was trying to create a grown-up, sophisticated room while still using lots of pink. I hope you enjoy this small bedroom makeover and get ideas for your own space!

    I am a retired, early senior, and enjoy your station. Although you appear to be tailoring your videos more to your own demographic, I realized today (as I relax in Morocco) that many senior women have the same budget and decorating issues: smaller incomes and a lot of things that we want to display as we move into downsized spaces. (However, for myself, my days of using pink are some decades ago.) I would like to see you broaden your own demographics by talking about the differences in what paint colors that could be used that may be more attractive to older women. I use a very warm grey, that goes with any grey, taupe, etc. You might look for a taupe-y grey, a lush navy and warm medium green to recommend as an alternative to your viewers.
    Also, the issue for downsizing is not thrifting something new, it is picking the right pieces to keep. I recently moved from a larger home to a studio apartment: downsizing to something more manageable. I needed, however, a lot of storage so that I could keep more of the things collected from a lifetime. So, I either left, sold or gave away most of my furniture and purchased IKEA (the best flat-pack furniture I have found) bedroom furniture. I have a lot of original art that fills the walls that have been purchased over the years. It is colorful and busy, so I chose Malmo, which you chose for this pink bedroom. I used the nightstand, although in the black-brown, the bed that lifts for storage, and four of the six-drawer dressers; the low profile helps to open up a small busy space. One of the 6-drawer dresses was used as a divider between the bedroom and living area and the remaining three I lined up along the longest wall end-to-end and looks like they are one installed piece; these house everything from dining linens, travel accessories and electronics. If you can envision this layout, you might see that our styles are not very different, I’m just a grandmother.
    Congratulations on your station and success. I can see your growth and development and applaud you highlighting other working women in your programs. Just consider giving a few tips regarding color changes (your choice of other great colors, like picking that fabulous pink from Benjamin Moore) on your makeover videos that could expand your audience from a younger demographic to include many more seniors. I look forward to seeing your LA programs.

      Just a note about colors in a bedroom, since as we age our skin can have imperfections , I find that colors like pinks make skin look better. Blue would make varicose veins more apparent for example.

      I am 68 and downsized. Kept a lot of original art collected over years, but softening my look with original designs in quilts made by me. It is softer and more me than my other spaces were. When I retired, I realized that my original artwork didn't fit my own home!

    Good call on the shelf above her closet. If it wasn’t there, it would look cold and meh. What a great way to add decor without cluttering the space. Now it added more appeal to the room. Bravo Alexandra!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    • @undomiel152003
      @undomiel152003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      True, but a lot of people hate the idea of having old furniture which belonged to someone else before them, and many more just do not like old styles, they only like modern lines. We are all different.

    • @mhurtou
      @mhurtou 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      undomiel152003 Old furniture has modern lines. It’s what IKEA is copying. Look up mid-century modern or Art Deco. Modern is not a new concept.

    • @undomiel152003
      @undomiel152003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mhurtou Let me put it this way, in the 60's my parents living room and dining room were the new Danish style of the times. I was not even in my teens yet. I know, I am that old. Everything new is an old style which has been tweaked from the past. What I am saying is, many younger people do no want something which has belonged to someone else in the past, it is not just the style they do not like. Look at the many hipsters of today with their 50's mid century furniture, many of them, the real thing, old. But not all young people like having old stuff. It is like they are afraid the furniture comes with ghosts or smells or something.

      @mhurtou 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      undomiel152003 I agree with people not wanting used furniture. All I was saying is there is very modern used furniture. Not all used furniture is an old style.

    Ooh la la...What a gorgeous make over Alexandra! That is one of my favourite video! I'm in awe because everything looks so pretty and cosy. I like how you always leave some room for people to add the extra practical bits they need; it doesn't bother me there is no mirror in the make over or that you didn't change the curtains... at the end of the day, Sarah Anne will add whatever she needs in that bedroom later. The place now has got a cohesive style and a beautiful simplicity. Definitely a HUGE thumbs up for the lighting, you're right about it, it just make the ambiance in the room perfect! GREAT JOB! Loved this makeover, I love that if you have space above a doorway or closet you can hang a shelf, it is space that often gets overlooked. The whole room does look more open and better organized, I am in the process of doing the exact same thing, and having a floor length mirror in your bedroom it has to be placed in the right spot, because it is bad feng shui to have mirrors in the wrong places. I love the color pink and if it fit in my bedroom would use it, but my favorite color is purple so I have been using purples and reds and bits of pinks, and will be painting my walls a soft white to blend with the different shades of purples, and maybe I could paint one of the walls a soft pink. Thanks Alexandra, this was a fun makeover.

    In the first 3 minutes of this video, I am inundated with HOW excited you are to update this room! I think i would have moved her bed slightly over towards the wardrobes so she could stand at her windows and be able to walk about . two bedside tables and a headboard of some kind, would have softened the room more. SO excited again at 5.15 ( edit please ) the set of drawers are beautiful and very stylish .At 6.45 again with the excitement ? I lie the overhead shelf idea , you could have added led lights in the shape of either plantlife or chinese lanterns.At 13.28 again SO EXCITED ( scream). I agree with Susan Gill, that a mirror IS needed , even if its just to bounce light around . I did a thumbs up , because your client was very happy .

      I agree. I however don’t think she has the skill level to design outside her “own style”. I keep reminding myself she is a self taught designer (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) so she does what “she knows and likes” because that’s what her design “eye” knows yeah? - at least that’s my take on her. She is sweet and likable and gives good little tips even though she redecorates almost every space in the same style with the same hacks.

    It looks great! I agree though that she needs a mirror. I can see both of the closet doors be mirrored. It would not only open up the room but would bring that beautiful day or night skyline into her room! Can’t wait to see it this way!

      Sarah Manuel Since the drawers are deeper than need be for jewelry she can add more corkboards and organizers above with racks to raise them up.

    I love the way that pink lamp gives a glow to that entire side of the room, so it kind of looks like both walls are pink without being overpowering. And the string of pearls plant hanging over that face pot like hair is really genius!
    I followed the link to that ModCloth coat and realized it’s the one my mom has in black. (My mom is super cool! 😉) Can verify that it is adorable in person.

    Lots of improvements to this room! Love the shelf over the closet and how you filled it, the flower light, the dresser and night stand. Not a fan of lights without shades. Wondered if she needed sheer curtains for the window but saw she had shades that pulled down. Love what you did with the cork and the earrings and the clear organizers. Love the runner you chose. Surprised by the pillows but see how the gold compliments the flower light and the pink is subtly in the rectangular pillow. Love the quote in the frame but not the font. Good job!

I don’t know what you think your demographics are but I’m a 57 year old business woman who is thoroughly enjoying watching the design art you do AND how much you enjoy doing it! You are definitely going places lady, keep doing what you do because you are going far - no doubt! You are FEARLESS!!!

    Tip for hanging earrings with wire hooks: hang them on vintage footed glassware -- fruit compotes, etc. Shallower the better and then the cup part is easy-to-retrieve storage for rings and pins. Looks fun on a dresser top or bathroom counter.

    The shelf above closet is a great idea, and looks awesome. A fresh and pretty, as well as relaxing room. Maybe a metal white, pink, or even black (to tie in with black specks in throw rug) wall hook for the hanging of clothes wood look more complimentary. The natural wood seems out of place. Lovely.

    • @jemma50
      @jemma50 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      She can easily sit to one side or the other. The frame doesn't cover the whole width of the bed. I'd want to sit closer to the light anyway. If you're sitting up in bed, it's probably to read, right? So you need light. :)
