  • Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today I'm making over a tiny condo bedroom into a dark and moody, cozy haven. This bedroom is under 100 sq ft, but requires a workspace, extra clothing storage and tons of style - not to mention everything has to be renter-friendly! I hope you love this makeover!

i would so love love LOVE if you guys would makeover a bedroom room that doesn’t have a lot of natural light!! i feel like i can speak for many people when i say that it’s so difficult to make a bedroom feel like a cozy when there’s no light coming through the window. i don’t think team AG has ever done a darker room before, so it would be a challenge, and SO helpful to so many people!!! love this makeover, it’s absolutely stunning ✨

For peel and stick wallpaper, all I do is put 2 staples at the very top of each corner. I hide it in the pattern and you don't even notice them (or paint the staples). That's all it takes to keep the paper up unless it's especially heavy wallpaper.

Painters tape, after a month, leaves all the glue on the walls or peels the paint off. I learned the hard way after hanging some artwork on my very white walls!!

I think if a hack is new, it ought to be tried out by the design team before slapping it together. And tested for longer than a month.
Or use tried and true methods and try the easy cheap ideas on the side to see if they work.

There's a technique I did years ago where I bought some pretty lightweight fabric and soaked it in liquid starch, rung it out and put it up on the wall, smoothing it out with the tool like you'd use for wallpaper. When it's time to remove it you just pull on a corner and it pulls away nice and clean. All you have to do is wipe down the wall with a sponge after.
Edit: I forgot to add the best fabric to use is cotton, from what I remember. From calicos to textures, just not too heavy.

love the design. But regarding the painters tape:The tape producer usually guarantees that u can rip it of traceless for a few days. After that, you are on your own and it very much depends on the underground. Used this before and tried to remove it 1 year later - hat to patch and repaint the wall,(but still was worth it). Since the underground looks brandnew and smooth, odds are of cause at least better than with an old or textured wall; and white is easier to patch then something coloured. What did work for me though was using a nice fabric with liquid starch instead of wallpaper.

Painters tape removes cleanly only for a limited time. If you're going to leave it for more than a few days, Oracal 631 removable vinyl is the best option. =) You can put it up on walls as a barrier between wallpaper or sticky tiles, or even on the floor if you want to use some of those pretty floorpop tiles!

Alexandra, usually I love your makeovers a lot! This one, although it certainly is an improvement, was not one of my favourites. It's probably just me, but I find that wallpaper hideous. LOL And I'm wondering why you couldn't have found another wallpaper that IS peel and stick??? That sure would have made your prep day easier. 😉
The shelves are super cool, yet I think they ought to have been lower. Good job with the curtains since you couldn't take down the blinds. ♥

Love the rich chocolate wavey custom headboard and pops of mustard in the cushion. Amazing trick with the two sized windows. I do think darker bed linen would have been better, maybe a dark beige, dark taupe etc. He didn't like that his condo looks like a white box and it still looks v white to me. Darker bedding/linen and even more wallpaper could have helped with that. Alexandra was hilarious and adorbs as always 💕

It was cute & definitely an upgrade from what he had.
The hanging rack was a lovely idea & his clothes were very elegant.
The closest itself needed an Ikea hack: cubby holes & drawers on the right, 2 roll bars on the left, with shoe pull out drawers behind it all.
To me, your solutions were charming & really spoke to his personality.
    --
In the future, this tiny sized room would have been the perfect space for your Murphy Bed/Couch hack.
Then you could have painted the bed cabinet. You could have used an industrial paint, textured paint (with sand) or chalkboard paint (for meeting fun messages). Then he would have been able to do his morning meeting from the couch!
Oh, & if you haven’t seen it, Home Depot has a telescope Murphy bed that looks about the size of a fireplace/Full size mattress & he could have had a yummy “date night” room during the evening.

I followed Christopher Lowell a lot in my 20's. One of his tricks was to use a completely cotton fabric print (no promises this will work if it isn't cotton) that he liked, and then soak it in liquid starch. Then you put it on the wall, smoothing it out until it's taut like wallpaper. It sticks and dries perfectly and you have an inexpensive but colorful type of wall paper that can be removed by just pulling it down gently. Then use a wet wash cloth on the wall, and it's like the starch was never there. You can also add things to the fabric on the wall as long as they are not heavy - so you can use one piece of fabric for the base design, and then create a border out of another. I went crazy and decorated a small bathroom with a lovely purple fabric, then created a different shade of purple border, then hot glued images printed out on photo paper to create a fairy border.

What always surprises me about these tiny rooms and studios in Canada or the US is that you have such a tiny room, living by yourself, and yet there is always a full-size double bed. Where I live, we would usually have a twin bed or a sofa that turns into a bed at night so that you can have more space and a place to sit during the day. I only got a "real" double bed when I moved into an apartment where I could have a separate bedroom :D

    Or
Rose pounded faux Leather fabric/Industrial materials all work for magazines racks or Art. You know the Diamond shape elastic bands that hold magazines & books for him to see from the bed.
Another thought to get back floorspace, would be to use accordion closet doors. Then his bed could have moved over
Then, you could have hung a basket/wicker/willow chair from the ceiling by the window or placed one on it’s own hanger. That would have given him 3 seating areas

If you avoid high humidity areas- you can use liquid starch(the laundry type) to hang any material. The bonus- material comes much wider than wallpaper. Soak in starch then wring out excess, hang using wallpaper methods. Removal- soak with water, pull off, clean starch off wall.

It is a nice transformation, but the hanging clothes will be a pain. Every time I’d make the bed or open the blinds, the clothes would be on the floor. Instead put 2-3 hooks on the each side of the closet door, (spaced to allow shirts/pants to hang one above the other on hangers). Do something similar with the inside of the larger door to the living room. It would give more of a curated look. Since he only takes his morning meeting at home (probably an hour or so) use a folding chair with a seat/bed cushion. Hang the chair on the wall to open the space and avoid stubbed toes when not needed.

So finally a wow factor! “The wall” was 👍 great. I feel the mirror would have been better over the desk and should of given him a row of 3-4 gold or black shelves going down the wall beside bed for storage for him but looks great good job

Engineer Your Space has done wallpaper on panels. That worked well. James has done wonders here once again. That headboard is what I did with mine - three layers to staple.

I wouldve defs used some dark charcoal paint on the clothes hanging wall. And the desk i would've used wood like the bedside table, and used darker linen and perhaps used a black and gold metal light fitting. But love this all the same....beautiful and wonderful work by Graham❤🎉

This is slightly darker and slightly more moody than it was, but it is not a great rendition if a true dark and moody bedroom.
If, like him, that's what I'd asked for and this is what I'd received, I'd be a bit bummed about it.

I recently went to view a studio apartment. Mine is 435, but the one I was going to see was 400 sqft...when I got there it was 150 sqft! I just was NOT looking forward to giving away HALF of the stuff I have, like I did 4 years ago when I left my 870 sqft apt.
I LOVE this series and I appreciate you showing us what we coukd do with our TINY spaces
