      Amen. This country needs to seriously reform its education system. Knowledge is indeed true power.
      Very well said, and a very timely bit of wisdom as well.
      If more Americans had access to more knowledge, we become enlightened and more self-aware..
      and then we can all stand together, as enlightened beings..together. Thanks for the nice comment. Hope u have a great,great day.

      I'm a size 58 w short hair And a size 59 w long hair, I buy most hats a size or so too large,and pad it down w sweat pads,I like the deeper, oversized look..I usually buy 60 or 61, even 62 a few times. I'm mostly wearing 60-61.
      U shouldn't stretch hats, but go large and shim them down, if u have a tight hat,u can stretch it from 57 to maybe a 59 if I do it, if anyone else does it,expect a half size, like 57.5. Nobody stretches like I do, it's pretty unusual.. I can get it as large as u want,60,61,62.. but the larger u go,the more stretch marks,lines and side effects u will get.. malformed brims, torn sweatbands..
      I'd say I can do two sizes, and anything more will look worn,used,or just show the stretch..the idea is to do it cleanly, invisibly.. anything beyond 2 sizes will look a little messed up

      Big apple is too big, I'd get a Grant if you like fullness,like a Tully.. they're 1/2 price now!
      the Tully is nice, but heavy and winter weight, not as versatile..

    The leather newsboy is like the epitome of NY cap. I have a Richard hat that's made of sheepskin and fur and is made in Canada. Pair it with my Brioni semi-leather overcoat and suit, man am I lookin' like a New YAWK'r!

  • @binkyxz3
    @binkyxz3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This type of hat got it's unique beginning in England during the 16th Century. In order to stimulate wool consumption and general trade, the British Parliament passed an act in 1571 that required all males over the age of six that were not of nobility to wear a wool flat cap on Sundays and holidays. Although the act was later repealed in 1597, by then the ivy cap was fully entrenched in English culture. By the 19th Century, almost all working class men wore ivy caps throughout Britain and Ireland. The upper-class also wore caps made from finer materials on the countryside. The patchwork versions started out of necessity -- using small pieces of scrap material to produce a functional cap. They gained lasting popularity as a showcase for the sewing talent required to produce one.

    Thank you for giving us the low down on all these caps. I now know that i need to embrace the floppiness of the 8 panel, or bail on it for a 6 panel cap

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really, 8 panals can range from tiny to huge in floppiness our Orchard Newsboy model is a tight little modern 8 panel,and we go smaller than that. If u can't get w that little bit of floppiness,it's definitely ivy cap, even most ivy caps are too wide for a lot of folks, they only go for the super skinny Ivy's..

    Thank u Kevin for the awesome video I know you stayed late to make it when you could have been home playing one of your many guitars 🎸 ( nice Dean btw in ur other video) . I just bought a Donegal Tweed and it is a lil poofy on the sides , I was debating if I could pull it off cause I have a lil bit narrow head but as I pointed out that is the Irish style . It does create an aura of mystique and refined mojo !! Cheers ! Keep strumming and thnx !!

    Great video, again. Thank you. You lay it out for us and point out what's coming out now, what's hot, what's not, and why...without ever forgetting the classics-- and telling us why they are classics. You explain the significance of Harris Tweed, etc. Love the historical references/asides. (Lennon, Ringo, etc.)

    The size down on the Tully may depend whether you have hair or are bald (like me), I recently ordered the Tully in size medium and had to return for a large. I wear. 59cm or 7 3/8 and the large fits perfectly (true to size) and allows me to pull down and cover my ears. Thanks for the videos, I enjoy them very much including your guitar playing and collection.

    Thanks. looks like I need to make a trip to NY City as finding these caps local to me in OH is difficult. With my smaller head, it is tough to find a hat my size (6-7/8). I don't wear ball caps. My grandfather wore the (Ivy) flat cap and now I think they are coming into my style. Definitely a fan of the skinny/narrow ivy cap. While I'm in NY City, I'll pick me up some salsa too. jokes aside, thanks for the quick look into these hats.

    Thanks for the video! I bought my first ivy cap (Irish tweed) many years ago, and I still use it. Since then, I have acquired a small collection of newsboy and driving caps. One thing I learned; in the end it is better to go to a real shop, and spend more on a well fitting high quality cap, than buying online and hope that it fits. Fortunately there's a well sorted shop in the city where I live (Amsterdam, Netherlands).

Wool/linen blend, or silk/linen blend? does the wool with linen make it cooler and lighter or what? Thank you sir. Rock on.

    My style is beanies but I also like my hair at medium length, just above the shoulders but its boofy and a bit curly, if I wear a baseball cap or a snapback I look rediculous, but, I think a newsboy with some floppyness or girth would be cool. But I'm 25 and feel like I will get some weird questions for wearing a hat older dudes typically wear 😂

    Great video. I've been looking for a a new newsboy for a while but have found the ones I've tried are too baggy for my liking. I wear glasses so the extra baggage gets in the way. I think its time to give a stetson a try, the Hatteras design looks perfect for me.

    Do you ship to Canada???? Whoops, looked at the details, and see that you do ship internationally. Big joy at my end.
    I have had several Ivys. Being large and having a lot of hair I have decided that the Newsboy will suit me better. Being in Canada it is important to have in in the right material. The Harris tweed or the thicker Irish tweed seems to be the way to go. The material makes a big difference in how the cap sits on yor head and how it lays, if you are going for a wider cap. Looking at a number of things on the market, I have noticed a lot of American retailers are selling caps made of a cotton polyester blend, which I feel should be avoided. If the site does not mention the material there is a real possibility that it will be a polyester blend. If it sells for 25 to 35 dollars US, it is almost certainly such a blend. In the long run one might be disappointed with those caps. They will not look so good after a couple of years wear. They do not react to rain or snow nearly as well as a good wool tweed.
    I have a Harris tweed flatcap that I have worn for years and it still looks good.

    Kevin - great videos, have enjoyed watching them Can you tell me what cap is the smaller newsboy that you show around 5:55 in the video? You said it was a smaller harris tweed. Also what size should I be looking at.. I'm like a 58cm and usually do a 7 1/4 or 7 3/8 hat depending upon fit. Thanks in advance!

    Newsboys and Ivys are a no go for me. I've tried them in the past and they look awful on me. Baseball caps are the same.
    Weird that my son looks good in those caps but bad in hats, whereas I'm the opposite of that.
    However, I never tried a fisherman's hat, so I picked up an old used one cheap, just to get an idea if they work or not on me.
    The trim on the bill is a definite no-go. However, the shorter bill works for me. The color doesn't work for me either, but again, it was just bought cheaply for reference.
    Having then looked at what wasn't working, I ordered a cheap used fiddler, in a more fitting color and without what I've read being called "scrambled eggs" on the bill.
    I think that will work a lot better for me. More subdued, less flashy, which is funny because it's the opposite with a few of my fur felt wide brims.
    The bill and colors of caps are what I found do not work for me. My son doesn't wear caps or hats at all, not his thing, but tried on the fisherman's cap and looks great in it.
    Genetics are a weird thing. Lol

    Whats best summer style fashion fiber hat for old baldies?

      Nothing really like that. U can find cotton knit berets but they look a lot like the muslim kufi
      Kind of funky,ethnic jazzy looking..may not be exactly like you're looking for. They don't really make summer berets, they're all wool, sometimes suede leather..,
      Best way is to have those hand knit by someone who does knitting and crochet. My aunt in japan makes them ,I have a lot of those..

      Best one?
      THE GRANT. amazing quality, a tad wider than a Tully but similar.
      They're half price until Valentine's day, I'd say get it. It's REALLY nice. Three colors. Made in new Zealand,w English tweeds
      The JJ newsboys are wide, they run a bit tight,
      The Baker boy is a Tully with no snap in front. They run huge, go at least a size smaller in it,
      (They run VERY large)
      the big apple is super wide, not online, u have to call. Same as the JJ newsboy but WAYYYY wider, a true big apple. Too big for some, also one size fits all

    Aren't the Stetsons made in Sri Lanka and China? :( I know some (maybe just the Harris tweed) are made in Scotland, but I think most are China. Sad, because I really like them. I prefer not to buy anything made in cheap labor countries, if I can help it, but I definitely don't want a traditional Irish cap made in China!

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fabrics are made in Scotland if it's Harris tweed, yes. Stetson has lines from Germany, Slovenia, Italy, and even China.. depending on how much the store owner wants to spend, we don't sell made in China, but they make tons of stuff, the good caps are German, and have nothing to do with the American made brimmed hats, they are made by very old cap makers in Germany because they're way better at it and have done it for centuries, so Stetson farms out their cap line to them, instead of buying a multi million dollar cap making facility,which would cost too much

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@quadrogong1111 Yeah the German ones make sense, and I bet they're awesome! I wish Stetson would just drop the Asian ones and source from the traditional hatmakers (whether in Germany or USA or the UK).

    is there a code name or ref. number for what you mentioned "wider ivy cap" by Stetson?

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not really, they don’t really make that stuff anymore. It’s all gone skinny these days from that brand. Stetson caps are not made by Stetson, it’s a German brand that only purchased the right to use the name, these days they only make this one narrow style called the Belfast. Citysport makes those wide ones, so does Doria, and Jonathan Richards, Hannah Hats.,

    trying to find out difference between the sewn down brim and snap brim what is better? also i have seen terms vintage and touring

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think u mean,if the cap brim is sewn down or snapped down, right..? I’d say neither,both are exactly the same,
      the difference is in the look.. it’s a taste issue.
      When it’s snapped down, only the center part is attached, so u get this kind of pleated, snapped down look,which is kind of classical and traditional, like it’s just attached in the middle..it gives it an old timey look.
      and when it’s sewn down the entire peak is sewn down, so the front looks neater,more even...clean.
      The thing is, when it’s snapped down, there’s a little bit of hand shaping involved, u can shape the park to look flat and sewn down, or jaunt and rakish look, to one side,etc.. but the sewn down look is cleaner,and the entire front of the crown is flush to the peak..it’s cleaner looking in front,rather than classical..

      Jeffrey Clarke touring usually means an ivy cap, driving cap, car cap, flat cap..all terms fo the same thing, it’s a fancy buzz word brands use to make their stuff seem more classy, British and authentic,just like,”vintage” there are two kinds of caps in the industry for the most part, Ivy caps and newsboys, and they both come slim or narrow, a lot of those marketing terms are there to entice the client, add a bit of elegance,
