Quick tip!
How to quickly stiffen a hat,
1.dust it w packing tape,
get every drop of dust/lint or else u seal it in forever
2.cover the sweatband completely,
(inner band)
I use a hat stretcher
but painters tape or
stuffing crown with a huge ball of tissue works
3. Use ultra super hold
hair spray ,not aqua net, any other brand.
Thin coats but get the whole underside of brim
, let dry and Repeat,
Let dry completely.
if needed,afterdrying, u may steam the
hat and fix any brim issues
But this is easier left to a trained hat tech, if you're unsure of what you're doing, just avoid steam. You'll do more damage than good,most likely..its tricky even w years of exoerience,and usually best to quit while your ahead if the hat looks ok,
and always keep steam off of leather sweatbands, it'll burn it and destroy the inner band in a split second,
*****steam NEVER goes on the inside of a crown or anywhere near the leather sweatband!!!**

All good. I could still hear. If i stumble across a small mic I’ll send one out to you. Not sure you remember I spoke to you on the phone about a couple of hats I ordered from Florida. The hatteras glen plaid and the jj linen gatsby. Seems the size was a bit to large after all so I sent them back to exchange for smaller sizes. They should be back there on Tuesday. Would you consider the ones I ordered skinny newsboy or fat? Also when you go down a size on a hat is the whole hat made smaller or just the headband? I prefer the skinny newsboy but that ivy you picked up at beginning is also a great looking cap. The patterns are really nice. Thanks for all your help. Cant wait to get the caps back and wear them.
SCL75 hatter as and gatsby are medium width, narrower for a newsboy, kind of what is in style now. And when u go down a size,everything gets smaller, narrower, less baggy too..it’ll be scaled down a bit.

Can you do a video on waxed cotton/canvas fedoras, and rain hats ? (Mayser Hogan hat)
Also Kevin, I have a Stetson Black Hawk crushable, can I treat it with some kind of water repellent for moderate drizzly fall/winter wear.
jerszak I’ve never done that, it’s probably not needed, I’ve never seen that model, I’m sorry... generally these hats don’t leak water, but they lose their shape.. u can use a little super hold hair spray when they get floppy, that will also seal out some water, but make sure u dust the hat completely w packing tape, get off every speck of lint,dust...then spray, thin coats..
Honestly, I do it when the hat gets floppy, not for water repellency.. I don’t think you’ll have problems where u need to do that, so the short answer is..no.

Another interesting and informative video Kevin. I got a Ivy cap this summer but with our heat didn't want to sweat through it, saving it for fall.
Clifford Holloway generally they’re lined, but that’s not always going to be enough with really 🥵 hot,hot places.. u can try getting two caps, and alternate them, wear one, while u let the other one dry out for a day.. that kinda works, but yeah, eventually u might have to hand wash it, use a little fingernail brush . a tiny bit of Woolite and hand wash, avoiding the peak, just wash the sweatband and the lining, it’ll work. Dry it on a towel,room temp, no heat.. (and if it dries wrinkly, u stuff it full of tissue paper really tight, and steam it,let it dry,)

Very British hats, making a huge comeback in the UK due to the series Peaky Blinders etc, i'm pulled to wear them but can't shake the stereotypical picture that they are grandad hats and street urchin hats lol, but they do have something about them.
It’s all about finding the right one, a baggy newsboy will look like a tough guy, u need to find a real fashionable one with an elegant cut, it’ll look more like a British gentleman, very gentlemanly and youthful, it’s THE most popular look w the average young, fashionable guy in NYC, like a baseball hat that’s all grown up, casual ,nonchalantly classy..I think u can do it, but u need a huge selection and to take your time,Stetson caps are made in Europe, so they’re readily available in the UK..

correct, duckbills.. skinny caps are in now, those are kind of trendy,we tend to do more classic styles, but they’re all getting mega skinny now,and nobody complains..
The new caps arrive in September, The time between September 15 and October 15 is when most everything comes in,

leather sweatbands in caps disappeared around the time I got here, in 1994 there was one brand left doing it,
they were called Wilson and Stanford, (they died a few years later),and I never saw a cap w leather sweatbands ever again.except for things like Greek fisherman caps,other stuff. But no flat caps or newsboys.
@@quadrogong1111 I haven't been able to fully embrace the bigger flop of newsboy caps. I tend to wear slightly slimmer ones. But I really don't understand Skinny Ivy's or earflaps in caps. 🤔😮

Most Irish are baggy but we sell many narrower ones, just not the Irish.. Italian ones are perfect for u.. they still come in tweed. Look in the newsboy section at www.jjhstcenter.com there are many.. just a kid the Tully and the Hats y, those are wider,more traditional

Not really, we have various spitfires, the Alfonso spitfire is really nice, it also comes in linen and leather too.. u can blouse the crown all the way forward like a newsboy,
or blouse the crown all the way back for a spitfire look, or even to the side.. just not straight up, (to avoid the chefs hat look) I like mine all the way back,
it’s a fairly small crown, very hearty, thick wool tweeds.. nice design. Great for rain and snow..custom made for us in Italy.. I’ll try to get them in a video sometime if u remember!😜

What is the slim herrbone or news boy hat called with the convertible ear flaps that can be tied or buckled on top of the hat
a Bugatti, they tie,snap or velcro on top.

It's rarely newsboy shaped, it's almost always a flat cap(ivy)shape
But the baseball cap with the same flaps is called an "Elmer fudd".
What is your opinion on the Stetson Open Road, in silverbelly. Is it worth the price?
I'd say yes,it'll last a lifetime if u care for it... but if u want to save money there are many used ones on ebay for less than half the price

You were amazing and a pleasure to do business with (I'm the Asian guy) btw was wondering what you think about wool fedora's hats. People say that wool is inferior quality compare to other felt materials and doesn't last as long..What's your opinion about it? (The Wool San Sebastian)
That's a vague question. Wool sourced from China like Gorin Bros is garbage, it's thin, shrinks,soaks up water like a sponge and costs as much as fur felt, it's absolutely the worst. Wool from China can vary from terrible to just fine,very nice..
Fur felt is usually better, but often a $200 fur felt hat is thin,raw edge,long brim..some big companies cut costs but I using very thin fur felt that curls..very cheap...
Other brands use good work like Lite Felt, which rolls, takes rain and never loses it's shape.. they hold up better than interior fur felts..
The wool SAN SEBASTIAN is not wool. Is is called the FX San Sebastian in the shop, it's a bargain at $200,rabbit fur and Merino blend. Custom made by Roche‘ in Seville Spain. At $100 it's a steal... but I work e thes hats,I see the quality, if there's anything I would advise u to stay away from. I'd tell u before u purchased it..
I couldn't say it here, but those FX quality hats are all half Price, we have seville shape,Cordoba shape and Sam Sebastian shape, all Merino rabbit blends, now half price.i wholeheartedly recommend these, maybe even better than the latest batch of fur felt san Sebastian's!!
And they cost $390
THOSE we had issues w the brims bring wavy, only the newest fur felt ones, but the cheaper, "wool" version is REALLY good, I'll show u both, you'll just see...it's obvious.
I owned the white fur felt san Sebastian.. I traded it to my coworker for my royal blue hat
But I'd suggest going w the wool blend version. If we have one..They're almost gone
