Interestingly enough, when Alec resolved Bolas's Citadel from Tibalt's Trickery, he would have been able to stay in his main phase and use it that same turn. There is a rule that says if a player casts a spell or uses an ability in response to you moving phases, you can choose to continue play in that phase after that spell or ability is resolved. Basically since there's technically no "going to end step" phase, the game keeps the active player in their main phase while the stack is emptied, at which point they can continue to play in their main phase, or attempt to move to end step again. Since Eddie cast his spell in response to the attempted phase change rather than in the end step itself, this means Alec would have still been in his main phase with priority after the stack was emptied. Obscure rule, makes a huge difference tho!

I gotta give a Like just because Queen Marchesa is being played. It's one of the first times I've ever seen a TCG where you grant boons to your opponents to keep the game in equilibrium in return for a favor. That kind of dynamic is completely wild to see.
This is top tier EDH content. Love feeling like these are all decks I could reasonably obtain, with a nice mix of real power, and then clear “it’s just cool and I like it!” additions to every deck. Very refreshing and awesome stuff! Excited for more.
I must admit, I love taking pride in building decks, for it is a truly a joyful hobby of mine. That being said, I will never reach Alex's ability to "deck tech" that well and consistently. That truly was beautiful (no disrespect to anyone else)
Everyone has their strengths, I'm sure you have yours! And who knows how many years he has been refining this deck. I have a Zur deck people are often shocked to play against. They don't realize i've spent years optimizing. Sometimes spending hours agonizing on a single change. Keep at it!
Mystic Remora reminded me of something I found out about cumulative upkeep. How it works is each upkeep you place an upkeep counter on it and then pay mana equal to the number stated on the card times how many upkeep counters are on it. Well, with Solemnity you can ignore the placement of said counters on cards with cumulative upkeep, thus removing said cost. Just a funny thing I found I am sure many others have as well.
You can also mess with the counters in many other ways, of course. Like using effects to move them to permanents that don't care about age counters (the actual name of the counters you place). Or proliferate your opponents' permanents' age counters.
@@therealax6 yes this is true, but that card is the only one I could find that straight up eliminates counters period. I found it using the Pharexian Unlife combo with it.
L1 Judge here. Mutate doesn't care about haste. When mutating, as long as the "host creature" is not summoning sick, you can attack with it that turn, regardless of which one is on top.

When the congregation was countered before the player moved to his end step and flipped into bolas citadel, he could have used the citadel to cast off the top of the library. The spell cast before he could go to end step means he's still in second main and can do further effects until he chooses to again try to move phases. Great game tho!
Correct. I only just learned about this rule of changing phases a month or two ago (after years of playing…) so that stuck out to me. All in all, I think it’s a pretty understandable misplay. It doesn’t seem like a very intuitive rule, and 99% of the time it doesn’t matter. I’m curious what he could have done with the citadel.
Came here to comment the same thing. Phases pass when the stack is empty and everyone passes priority. So essentially everyone didn't pass priority due to the destruction spell targeting the witch. Once that stack fully resolved, bolas's citadel would be in play in the second main, with the active player having priority.
@@riotxcore6108 yea this was quite a big error especially as he said it was in the main phase twice. It might have changed the game but I think more often than not it would play out as you see it as he probably hits two lands before anything major happens, although he would have likely had ten permanents in play so they could have both killed him lol.
