It’s the same in the San Francisco area. But I will add that I worked with a man who demanded that his plate be cleared the INSTANT he decided he was finished eating. Similarly, I worked with a woman who would make the snide comment, “Oh, so your trying to turn the table” if a waiter politely asked to clear her plate before she was finished. I’ve never waited tables, but I truly feel for these people. You just can’t win. Finally, when I lived in Mexico City it was common to ask the waiter to clear your plate. They didn’t want a diner to ever feel rushed, and I respect that.

I love the dynamic of the two of you. I also believe that native speakers can’t teach Spanish to English speakers. There are just too many concepts that they do intuitively without even being aware they do it. It takes an English speaker to say, yeah it makes no sense, but this is how it’s done. Or to be fluent in English enough to know that rarely used equivalent in English. Thanks for what you do! It’s great!

Yes, plates are cleared quickly in the US, I think because they want to increase table turnover to increase profits. Likewise, a server will often leave the bill on the table while you're still eating with a cheery, "No rush, I'll just leave this here." While this helps the restaurant increase turnover, it also saves the customer time not having to flag down a sever to request the bill later.

in Colombia we have to ask for everything.. to order, for another drink, for the check..literally everything haha. nothing moves fast here, and no one is in a rush to either take your order, or get you out the door when you're done. it's kinda nice actually, when you just learn to go with it.

Instead, servers who have proper etiquette, will ask if there are ANY plates that they can get out of our way. This applies to ANY restaurant. Also, vacuuming the floors while customers are eating is a big no for me. Even when they're using the quiet ones. Who wants dust from dirty foot traffic flying around your food? That's just McNasty! Servers who take your glass and a glass from another table for refill are inconsiderate. It leaves the customer feeling insure if the glasses have been swapped by accident. So most finer restaurants will usually bring you a fresh glass instead of a refill. Servers commonly bus dirty tables themselves because busboys are usually doing other tables... so its common to see a server touch dirty plates and fresh plates simultaneously. When that happens, I'm done. And the server should not expect a tip. That's disgusting...🤢🤮 There is usually a sign that says "please wait to be seated". However, if no sign is present, we assume its ok to sit where you please... such as a waffle house, a roadside diner or a fast food restaurant.
