FILM DESCRIPTION:
In feudal Japan, Lord Asano rules his province with fairness. However, jealous Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) fears that the shogun favors Asano over him and hatches a plot that ends with Asano's ritual suicide. After Asano's death, his samurai, led by Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), are forced to live as outcasts. Oishi wanders for several years but realizes that he must turn to Kai (Keanu Reeves), a mixed-blood warrior he once rejected, to help him and his ronin comrades take revenge on Lord Kira.

Real Life: The Kirin was a half dragon half horse creature that was viewed as sacred and, for this, was well respected. It walked on clouds and water in fear of harming a single blade of grass and was known to visit the emperor's daughter in her garden from time to time.
47 Ronin: The Kirin is a half wit bull thing that mindlessly charges and destroys all in it's path.
Just because it's half dragon and half horse doesn't mean it's Kirin. Kirin's characteristics include a combination of a dragon and a horse, but the tail must be shorter like a horse, not a long tail like a dragon, and the legs must have cloud-shaped patterns and feathers with fire and wind patterns to show Kirin's true appearance.
Because Kirin is not just a imaginary animal
It's a god's creature, deinty animal And an animal protected by the gods.
However, because he had to express the monster in the movie, he was forced to portray the characteristics of bulls, dragons, horses, and had six eyes.

I know people are kinda riled up by the Kirin being misrepresented here, but if you just look past the mythological origin and look at it as its own entity, this is a pretty badass monster.
They still should have called it something OTHER than a Kirin.

I think it's a bit bad that the Kirin ended up basically being a glorified rhino. They're supposed to be immensely gentle creatures.

Tempered Kirin is a walk in the woods, easiet elder dragon by far other than Vaal Hazak. The AT form is just the same.

A turf war between this Kirin and a Furious Rajang would be a mind-blowing clash of the titans.
The Kirin was badly misrepresented here. The Kirin is a supernatural creature who symbolizes luck, good omens, protection, prosperity, success, and longevity. It is not a rampaging monster which must be killed. But then again, all the Yokai are poorly featured with little explanation for what they truly are. Then again Yokai have no part in the historic legend of the 47 Ronin. In a sword and sorcery fantasy...yes, but in the story of the 47 Ronin....no.
I was just thinking, isn’t the story with the 47 Ronin about a bunch of ex-samurais that wanted revenge for their lord right? Their lord was kind of a dumbass who humiliated himself at the hands of another lord, which lead to the seppaku of their lord, resulting into one of the most brutal reprisals of revenge in History.
I thought Kirin was a beer.

@@InVinoVeratas .....Ronin are not ex-samurai. A samurai is a samurai until death. Rather Ronin are masterless samurai'; unemployed until a new Daimyoi (Lord) accepts their service. And Daimyo Asano did not humiliated himself with Lord Kira. Lord Kira was a rude arrogant man who felt he wasn't given enough gifts (bribes) so he spoke with disrespect to Asano until he passed the breaking point, drew his katana and tried to kill Kira. Asano wounded Kira but guards stopped Asano from delivering the death stroke. So Asano was sentence to death not because of humiliation, but attempted murder of a high official. Because of his many years of service to the Shogun Asano was permitted to perform seppuku instead of be executed like a common thief
This movie wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be, I really liked it to be honest. Hope people give it a chance especially with Keanus recent resurgence.
It's not a bad movie, but unfortunately, it really does not deserve to call itself 47 Ronin. They should have named it "Kai" and nobody would have noticed.
It's just that the movie tried to be a lot of things but never exploited any of it's ideas. It would have been 100% if they had focused on making it realistic.
The music and costumes are top thou. The same composer even worked again in Ghost of Tsushima!

When Kirin is most respected among the Dragon and the Pheonix in Shinto, but just slaughtered in 47 Ronin.
I wish they make more movie in this universe at this exact same period and setting to explore the mythical side of things

This movie was so underrated 😭
I know this movie did not do the best in theaters, but! Someone who likes Japanese history and culture, especially the mythology. I was quite pleased. Sure there were some liberties taken like the Kirin going on a rampage, it seems though the creators of the creatures did a decent job on their research.
An example is the dragon at the end. Look at the tail and scales, looks like a Koi fish. According to legend Koi fish can turn into dragons if they swim up a holy mountain or live a long life.
Pretty good film overall at least for me 😊.

Sorcereress that can shapeshift. Kitsune are known to do so, but its never explicitly stated if she is one. A lot of the mythological aspects of the movie are left ambiguous to preserve the mystery. Fairly good movie, worth the time, but nothing spectacular: the Sunday brunch of blockbusters.

It should have been a Kitsune, but the American producers decide not to elaborate on the fine details of Yokai, letting non-Japanese audience to see the Yokai featured as mere monsters. Which is why Mizuki is not spoken of as a Kitsune, but as a Witch, a human, who among her magicks has the power of shapeshifting. Also, note the fox presented only had one tail, so it would not have been a very strong Kitsune, but the producers decided not to go in that direction.

I know I am very late to write this, but I have to say it. People here are complaining about the inaccurate depiction of the Kirin. I’d say the real offender of this scene is the armor these warriors are wearing are Chinese, not Japanese.

And yes, I know its a movie and that I am basically looking at a CGI beast with the same pov as I would one of my horses, but my point still stands.
Theoretically, this is not a display of aggression. This is an animal trying to escape. He is scared, literally just tryibg to get away by running, and its only when they block his path that he gets physical.
And the fact that you can see real animal behaviour in this animated creature, thats really inpressive.^^

underrated movie.
Great scene but aren't Kirin supposed to be good? I mean, maybe they can be corrupted but i was under the impression of a peaceful , ethereal being who's sightings foretold of a great an benevolent leader to arise. Pure and seemingly innocent they walk upon clouds so that they do not trample and kill even a blade of grass...Still this scene is awesome and that Kirin is badass! :)
