  • Halo 6" insulation contact new construction ceiling can causing an afci breaker to trip on a lighting circuit trying to diagnose the problem. This has only happened two times in my career of being a licensed General electrician on the Eastern shore of Maryland. I've installed 500+ of these fixtures with only having an issue with two of them. Needless to say it's a loss of time for me to keep finding faulty products. My only hope is to help inform the handy home-owners and professional sparky's of this. I can't be the only one to have this issue happening twice ✌️

Hey Ron great video on troubleshooting the issue it’s good information to know in case i have the problem. I have been hearing that a lot of the Eaton C/H afci/gfci br style breakers are tripping, have you ever used that style panel in your installs? Do you think that is a good panel? A friend of mine wants me to install some outlets and recessed lights in her basement and she has the Eaton/br style panel. She wants me to install the canless pancake style.whats your thoughts on using them.she has the plastic nail on boxes with plastic incandescent bulbs she wants to sheet rock the ceiling can I use the canless lights.she wants me to take down the nail on boxs and put the canless lights in place of them.

Hey Larry, won ! Lots of good questions. Yes, I've used Eaton and Cutler Hammer. But prefer to stick with square D. it's the most available in my area. All of the manufacturer have had there share of problems with the AFCI breakers when they first came out. Most of the bugs have been worked out. The biggest problem I still have are certain brand of appliances causing nuisance tripping issues. I prefer the disk/pancake style of light fixture that uses a round nail on over the flat LED with a driver. Mostly due to the majority of the work and mess is complete during rough in phase. If you install recessed cans over an occupied space such as a living room, you'll get more noise transfer through them. I found this out the hard way. Trying to sound proof my daughter's bedroom. It was a big mistake.

By code wire is supposed to have play under them I am an inspector and the dewalt gun dose the perfect amount of play and it was designed to operate like this

Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻 The play I'm talking about is side to side movement. The staples are listed for two 14-2 NM wire under on staple. If you were to install 4 qty. no.14-2 on one 2x4 stud , the side to side slop allows the wires to fall outside the 1¼" setback requirements from the edges of the 2x4 there stapled to. That been my experience using the DeWalt stapler. If I'm double stacking 14-2 side by side, I revert back to the hand banger staples.

I TROUBLESHOOT lights first by turning all switches off and seeing if it trips if not i know its not the switch boxes. Then i turn on lights one by one until i narrow down to where the problem is. I keep all my plans for every job on pdf on a server for like ten years. I make a habit of all my home run to be the closest switch or outlet to the panel for every circuit.

I do this practice of turning switches off too. It's kind of hard to know if the lights are on or off on three and four-way circuits.

It's exponentially expensive to go back to a job. Our policy is, "If you don't have time to do it right, when are you going to have time to do it over."
    When it's a manufacturer's problem it's frustrating.

We always use the cheaper option in the Home Despots ("Generic/Central Electric"?): easier to install and they work fine. 6" cans are made for cheaper each year, but their price don't come down... :-/

I have tried those in the past and seemed to be ok. I switched to Halo years ago. Mostly due to the price from Lowes. If you buy 2 of the contractor's six packs of cans at a time you can get the pro deal on them. I'm paying $8.55 per can which includes the trim too. So 🤔 it's one of those deals where you get what ya pay for. So I guess getting 2 bad cans out of 500+ is not that bad. But killing time trying to diagnose the problem is.

Am old school so never used gloves. Got way too many cuts on cheap progress and the rest of low end hi hats. Luckily I got enough industrial work was lucky if I did a weeks residental work in last 25 years. I put Ligholier hi hats in my home 40 years ago and was able to replace a drop lens hi hat trim that was over 30 years old. Good luck trying to get replacement parts from cheating scum bag china. We had over 100 LED drop ceiling LED luminares made in china. Less then 2 years later could not purchase replacement lens due to cheating china company went out of business.

Thanks for watching Garbo, I'm recommending to customers that we install fixtures and fans that have standard light bulbs. I'm seeing a pattern from China manufacturers incorporating the bulbs into the fixture so when the bulb goes out you have to throw the whole thing away. Wow look what we came too🤯A throw away society.🤔 The other thing I've noticed people buying fixtures online that are not listed in labeled for installation in the United States. Some have no box cut out hole for mounting.

Thanks for watching George. Both occasions, it was the thermo safety switch inside the can. Problem fixed as soon as I switched the can out. The electrical inspector wanted the bad can for training his students. So I guess something good came out of this problem found. I think he's even showing my video to them.

Thanks for watching and commenting Joseph 👍👍The contractor I'm wiring houses for wants budget friendly lights. 6" cans with trim rings are cheaper then 4" due to them being more popular and sold in a contractor's 6 pack.
