you probably got it fixed before I watched this but what I have done is compress the spring in a vise, tie a wire around each side reinstall being sure the keeper is in place and cut the wires. Just yank out the cut wires and your in business again. Thanks for the video!

Awesome lill birds! The older I get the more I dig nature and how amazing it truly is. You are a great mechanic! Thanks for making such fantastic videos and teaching us as well.

My wife thinks I watch too much Musty 1 videos. Hah! I must say that I enjoy your format that shows what you are doing, and not just a long drawn out head shot explaining what you did. Keep up the great format and interesting work.

140psi air in the spark plug hole will hold the valve closed while you put the new valve spring on

l use a compressor line with 100psi and a screw in line to the cylinder and briggs valve spring compressor it worked great never had to pull the head it done it a great many times sincetry it out cheers steve from victoria

You can feed soft cord into the spark plug hole then push the piston up it will hold the valve.

today I happened upon a video of fluffy iglesias from mexico who has a nice collection of 30 vdub busses he happened to mention that when volkswagen was making these vehicles in brasil there was no respect for the build protocols, where you could find different year fronts compared to the back,in other words terrible stuff so if your buddy got these heads from brasil that may be part of the problem as to this mangled spring...just a though I am no mechanic just a satisfied viewer keep up the nice work !!!

I've got some wild doves with young in a nest on our balcony..It's cool to watch..Get the cylinder on TDC and blow air into the cyl....You know that stuff...Good test for a bent/burnt valve...It looks a bit mushied over on the tip. That had to be a faulty spring.

This is not the first time I have seen this problem. My mother had a 1971 VW with the 1600 Dual port engine. The problem is always the number 3 valve. In 100,000 miles my mother's VW threw valves off the number 3 cylender three times down into the crankcase, and a rebuilt motor had to be installed. Many people who had these busses in the 1970's and 1980's installed aftermarket external oil coolers to try and cool the engine.

arg!! My buddy had the accel pump tube from the carb get sucked in and it turned it into ball bearings in the cylinder. He installed new pistons and cylinders and had it back together in 24h

when I brought my 68 back to life I had four all on the same side break, if you look at the spring real close on the break you will see rust usually caused from sitting too long I was able to buy a tool just for changing the springs and keepers on the car with the aide of compressed air, you do have to get creative and take my word replace all of them at one time because they will all break

I've just had the valve cover gaskets replaced on my 73 super beetle to fix an oil leak and now I hear knocking sounds when ecellerating on a hill that I didn't hear before. What do you think?

  • @whoolph

I have an old modified spark plug with an air fitting welded on in my tool box that allows one to pressurize the cylinder so you can compress the valve spring. Maybe something fabbed similar would help you. Good luck, Rog

Is that a barn swallow nest? I used to drive a vw back in the late 60s. Heads kept pulling the head bolts out of the block.

Lucky that keeper jammed in there. I guess real luck would be that it didn't happen at all.

they have a valve tool that sits on the rocker shaft area and you use compressed air to hold the vavle closed. if you find a better way please share. thanks for the vid.

  • @TheShadeTreeFixitMan

Can't you pump the cylinder with air and then use a fulcrum spring compressor off of the rocker stud? Should be a pretty straight forward situation so long as the keepers will drop back into place properly.
As long as it takes to drop one of those motors I would have thought it would be easier to do on your bench. Half hour out, fix motor, half hour back in again?

As i dont know what angle the sparkplug is in respect to the valves then i dont know if welding a solid rod to the end of an old sparkplug would do any good.
spanermantim has a great idea :-)
Really like the ease of rockerbox cover removal :-)
I suppose no spring is perfect, just a minor fault and it can fail.

Feed a small dia. rope or cord through the spark plug hole and rotate the engine until it stops.

  • @GhettoWagon

What!! The only thing that holds that valve cover on, is an old spring clip like an old master cylinder? Is that the case with all flat 4 VWs?

    • @MrUbiquitousTech
      @MrUbiquitousTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, they made it easy to get to the rockers since you have to adjust them every five miles or five minutes, whichever comes first.

Draai de zuiger naar het bovenste dode punt , de zuiger houd de klep tegen .Maak een strip op de beide tapeinden met een hevel die de veer icl de veerschotel in kunt drukken , dan kun je de borging aanbrengen.

That round clamp closest to the broken spring is bent so even if you replace the spring without replacing that clip/ clamp that holds the cam rod you might have a broken spring again. Watch the video? Lol

Hello mustie may be you can help me, I lowered my engine to fix oil leaks, well I got them fix, while my engine down I adjust the valves, when I put it back in my bug and connect every thing, the engine rotates but will not start,, I went back and check timing, but when I checked the valves they were off, so I guess I did something wrong, so now I adjusted the valves once again and check the timing and it ok, but the engine rotates but will not start,,, thanx

Epoxy air chuck to spark plug with ceramic taken out
One of the retainers were missing, this causes the spring to compress unevenly and fail
