I Can't Believe My Winch Did This!

  • We found a dead tree that we thought was about to fall, so we decided to pull it with the winch, thinking it would snap. Instead, the 13,000 lb Orcish winch (amzn.to/3Fs7AOw) pulled the tree all the way over, uprooting it! I'm impressed.

    Subscribed due to "the 'sh!+' outa" comment, along with all the "do alot of weird sh!+ on this property" which is why I am looking for a winch, myself... :D
    I was looking for info on Orcish stuff, as I am a fan of Orc-related movies and dice-games from my younger years, (Hard as a hog-bread humanoid is how I take "Orcish")
    and it'd be nice if you could give us an update on if it is still holding up 2 years later, and how much it's been used...

      I use it often, doing fine except it started kicking itself on for a second every now and then. Probably moisture in the control box. I installed a switch on the positive cable, near the battery. I keep the power off to it until I need it.

    I'm not saying it's a bad idea or anything but I would have cut the wires put a quick disconnect in it and I would have put my winch in the back of my truck so it has stayed really nice and not been out in the weather and then when you need it you get out and you slap it on every time I've had a winch it sets outside even with a bag or anything it draws moisture and eventually it stops working and these winches are like $380 each now

    • @ChrisGilliamOffGrid

  • @MsThylacine

    No expert here but as I understand it, the synthetic pull rope will be "safe" for only so many heavy pulls like that. I guess try to check the recommendations and just keep that in mind. Also a winch cord "safety blanket" /'cable damper" that you throw over the cord during the pull will help keep rope from snapping back and hurting someone in the event of failure especially in up close situations. Just some things I've read while in process of looking for a good winch, for what it's worth. I am totally going to look at at 13,000 lb Orisch winch for my FJ Cruiser. They also come in color choice. Great Video- Thanks!

    • @ChrisGilliamOffGrid
      @ChrisGilliamOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm on my second rope, would be on my third if truck had not been in shop last three weeks. Had synthetic rope break once, due to heavy fraying pulling fence posts, and it just fell harmlessly. Been great winch so far, though I did have to remove in the inline overload protection that came with it, and change remote control batteries after a year.

    We use nothing but the cheap winches. Orisch, X-Bull, Stegadon, they are all from the same mold I think. Use them on average 5 times a day pulling everything from Mini Coopers to 36 foot motorhomes out of the sand. Day in, day out. They are very reliable. The only one I would stay away from is the Vevor. First one doesn't free spool unless you are hooked to something, pulling with the truck. They replaced it, but I was too lazy to swap it out, and I rarely use the truck. Let the new one sit for a month, and all of the oil leaked out of the gearbox. Not impressed. We have replaced a couple winches, one when I sold my original pull vehicle I left it on, one when water was sprayed with high pressure into the unit, and when I got an additional vehicle. Only failure was one rope, and one remote control unit. Oh, and one solenoid. Well over 1k cycles per winch.

    • @ChrisGilliamOffGrid
      @ChrisGilliamOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know. Mine has been a beast. On my third rope now, but I abuse them, and ropes are cheap.

      For smaller animals use one of your conibear traps. Just set the trap and pop it over the animal's head to fire it. The animal is dispatched cleanly, silently, and quickly. No fur damage either. Perfectly legal and very humane.
