Nowhere near enough people were aware of its existence sadly. Also, I don't think the fact that it was 3D-only helped, there were very few, if any, 2D showings around. I used to wear my "Make A Dredd Sequel" t-shirt a lot back then, I should dig it out! 😀

Not only Karl Urban, but Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson as well. I'd love to see a story set a few years down the line where Dredd and Anderson are thrown together again against a block war.
i stumbled across this movie a few years ago, having no clue about its existence. Imagine my surprise that i'd actually missed a masterpiece. I used to read the Judge Dredd stories in newspapers when i was much younger. This movie just had the rotten luck of being made during a time when batman and the avengers, with their lower audience ratings got more bums on seats. It was in a way a pre cursor to Logan, another 18 rated masterpiece which turned out to be the best wolverine movie in the franchise. Karl Urban has terrific range, he can do all types of characters.
The newspaper strip is actually surprisingly good. I got it in a collection just cause I am a Dredd Nerd and wanted to own a copy and there are some very good story arcs in there.
I think it was because of two things 1) It's comic genre (fan base) is limited somewhat compared to mainstream comics such as in the DCU & MCU 2) They should've made a series first then when that had bedded it after around five seasons hit everyone with the movie! There's a good program made about this illustrating the history of AD Comics on Sky TV (I think a it's been a while since I watched it) it's really good if you want a background of the comic franchise.
I feel that a higher budgeted series would be amazing with Carl Urban as Dredd that could take place either directly after the events of "Dredd" of 6 months or a year later that explains the aftermath of the "peach trees" with the first few episodes showing a "day in the life" type stories that slowly culminate to the appearance of Judge Death and the dark judges I would definitely watch that
I'm a fan of the Dredd comics and love Dredd 2012. Karl Urban is so good in the role. I remember watching this movie quite a few times after it was released. Still have it on DVD lol. It's a classic for sure. Thanks Minty!
The direction and cinematography were superb! The close-up shots allowed Karp Urban (and others) to still do great acting work while wearing their helmets. And yes, the movie had a LOT of scenes that were simply beautiful. The cinematographer went on to win an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.
Agree with your criticism of current superhero films, Minty. Keep the focus on more earthbound "good vs bad" stories. I'd love to see Urban return as the character. These properties pass through so many hands, with each person leaving their own mark, what sometimes makes it onto film is barely recognisable. Not including the iconic eagle shoulder pads was the only minor disappointment.
Yeah but dude, imagine this. An entire city is under attack and only one man has the power and the nerve to stop the alien/monster/multidimensional invasion that is about unleash unholy hell on the good people of Cityville. Boom! POW💥! Everything's exploding. Some people are trapped on a bridge. BOOM💥! Another explosion. People are trapped in a sky scraper. BOOM💥! Another explosion! Traffic jams, pedestrian pile ups. BOOM💥! EXPLOSION! EXPLOSION! EXPLOSION! (panting)...... Could you imagine?
Well, while Dredd does keep his helmet on for 99% of the comics he appeared in, Dredd did remove his helmet on a couple of occasions, in one, it had a censored bar across it, saying Dredd's face was too horribly disfigured to be shown and another strip had Helmetless Dredd taking a bath and taking out some perps who were robbing him, all while sat in his bath tub, his face was only shown in shadow or from behind iirc and his face was fully revealed in the Dead Man strip.
I remember the amusing little story of a couple of perps trying to break into Dredd's apartment, No.1 Rowdy Yates, figuring there was something valuble behind the extra reinforced door. Pretty sure Dredd kept his helmet on in the bath. Can't be absolutely certain though, without digging out the actual prog it appeared in, so you could be right. Btw, would love to see a Rogue Trooper film.
Karl Urban "insisting on Dredd not taking his Helmet off", Henrey Cavill demanding "Gerald to be true to the books" There should be a hall of Fame for those Actors who have fought for their Charcters. Hey Minty how about a Top 10 of that?!
They started production on a Mega City One TV show just before covid, Karl was rumored to be reprising the role. Unfortunately it seems to have bitten the dust.
My best bud once said of Karl Urban "He's a better actor from nose to chin than most actors are from head to toe" referring to not just DREDD, but many other productions Karl's been in
I really enjoy watching this movie, it has the feel of the comic and takes me back to my teens. 2000AD has some excellent characters in its pages and hopefully one day an ABC Warriors movie will me made.
@@Button101Man I think someone did make an animated movie of Strontium Dogs but didn’t ask permission so it was buried. Not many people know it but 2000AD was a leader in Punk fashion and to my knowledge were and are the only mag that had Punks in the background as citizens 😱.
This was the perfect Dredd. I've loved this movie since i first saw it. Karl Urban nails the Dredd vibe. And the rookie (forget her name) is even better as his foil. This is how you make a super hero movie.
Dredd is amazing and I am sorry to anyone who missed it in the theater as it is one of the BEST 3D films ever made, right next to Avatar. The slowmo 3D effects were amazing.
I grew up on 2000ad comics. I didnt mind the Stallone version, liked seeing all the characters, ABC warriors and The Angel Boys but Dredd was perfect and kept it true to the comics.
I liked "Dredd" a lot as it reminded me of the block wars story lines. I did chuckle when I saw the "fatties" in the movie as that was such a funny story line in the comics. I always thought the cursed Earth story ark would have made a good movie. I have often wondered if so many would have been offended by the 1st movie if the helm was only off for the prison sequences. It is still a heresy but maybe forgivable.
Dredd fan boy here and Urban was and is DREDD! His love for the comics i grew up with allowed me to see my Judge, Jury & Executioner live on the screen. I still own about a hundred or so comics, especially the first 10 from Eagle comics as well as the Batman and my 2 part Hellraiser special editions❤
what's really really annoying, is they brought in Anderson, and Olivia Thirlby played the part amazingly, should have opened the door for the Psi-Division, which would have been an amazing way to bring in Judge Death and the Dark Judges. We should have had a sequel, and i think deffo Urban and Thirlby to come back again as their respective parts
I used to drink in the Peach Tree when I lived in Shrewsbury. Probably not an interesting fact for anyone else, but it always make me chuckle especially since I grew up reading 2000AD and actually still have most of the first few editions.
Absolute masterpiece - I am another person that had zero awareness of this film until it came to video release - an utter travesty, but Minty is right, Avengers and TDKR were devouring ALL the attention that year.
I love how, at the end, when he's asked to describe what went down, he just says, "Drug bust. Perps were... uncooperative." This really is just another day in the life for him. It can and perhaps does go this bad on a regular basis.
I LOVE this movie! The day in the life of a Judge was the best way to introduce us to two of the main characters. I was a big fan of Dredd when this movie came out but the advertising did push me away, especially the 3D BS, hate and avoid it, and I think initially it said it was only going to be released in 3D and it was only later I found out they were also showing it without the 3D. If only this was the first film released and not that Sly crap we got back in the 90s(only good thing about that movie was the music they ran in the trailer) I keep hoping for many sequels but if the people responsible for this aren't going to be doing it, kinda less interested, I want another passion project.
All us fans of the Urban Dredd have been crying out for a sequel for years...and while I get that isn't going to happen...I still don't understand why none of the streaming giants haven't made a spin-off series. Karl Urban may not be available for it, given his involvement with The Boys success...the series could still be a huge success if it simply followed the gritty lead of the movie. Also a series could give so much more depth to the whole Dredd universe...exploring the various levels of how far society had fallen...and why ultimately, Dredd was fighting a battle he could never really win.
This is a massive underrated film and having grown up with 2000 AD and Judge Dredd I think this film does it justice (pardon the pun) It brings a gritty feel in a dystopian land and who needs fancy shoulder pads anyway. Not removing his helmet brings it true to the comic book style, only wish there was a sequel but then again could it pull off what the first film gave us. I do think there was a missed opportunity of bringing more 2000 AD charcters to the big screen or maybe in a style of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs where you had 6 different stories in a film.
One of the most underratted movies ever made. Urban was perfect in the role. The most bad ass moment in the movie is when Anderson scans the people in the other room and describes Dredd as order but "there is something behind the order something almost.....". As if the almost is something truly dark.
I don't know about ALL markets, but in the DFW area and, as far as I know, the states; Dredd was marketed as "Dredd 3D" and was ONLY available as a 3D film. At least every single theater I frequented and checked. This was at a time when EVERYONE was adding 3D to movies and at the point Dredd was being marketed, I think people were SICK of it. I only went and saw this movie because I was really curious, but hated that I had to spend 3D prices, but I am glad I did. This movie was MADE for the big screen AND 3D. I told everyone I knew to go see it. It wasn't a gimmick. The 3D made this film even more amazing than it was. Ultimately, this film failed because it wasn't marketed well and, being only in 3D I think really hurt it in cinemas.
As a HUGE fan of the Dredd comics I wasn't that bothered by the uniform changes, they made sense. What works on a drawn page is not necessarily practical on a real life set. Ditto for the changes to the lawmaster bikes. All of it kept the spirit of the comics while being real world practical. Urban nailed Dredd and I am glad he insisted on keeping the helmet on. I really cant stand the original with Stallone, despite being a Stallone fan, it just goes too much against the spirit of the comic which I had been a fain of for years before that film. The 2012 once really captured what Dredd should be and it would be a shame if we don't get more.
@@jamisondaniel68 I am so disappointed it hasn't happened already. At this rate Karl Urban will be old enough to do some of the "Old Dredd" stories like the democracy one :P
Agree with your take here. Unfortunately, Stallone became the typical Hollywood actor and wanted more "face time" on camera, going against how the character is depicted in the comics.
@@echopeakbicycling85 I mean in the comics even when his helmet of his face is conveniently in shadow. I remember one of the goofy one off stories "Judge Dredd in the Bath" he didn't even take his helmet off to bathe. Hilariously he also manages to arrest a perp without getting out of the bath.
(Speaking as a lifelong devotee of 2000AD, with a collection which would make any geek’s eyes pop out) - I loved the Stallone Dredd, and went three times to see it with my late father in York. The problem is that it’s an “action film”; anybody who knows Dredd, or indeed any Brit stuff of the time 2000AD came out, is that Dredd is political satire with occasional violence - it was conceived as an opaque satire on authoritarianism. If anyone is interested in the fascist subtext to Dredd, please read Wagner’s serial “America”, in which Dredd is an absentee villain, determined to preserve the polity.
Chris Gore talked about this version of Dredd a couple of weeks ago. His reaction when he found out the name of the writer (and rumoured uncredited co-director) was pure fandom: "Alex Garland wrote this? Of course it's great!"
I'm a fan of both movies. I don't think that Dredd was overlooked at all. Tons of people like it. Urban wanted to take it to Netflix for a series, which would have been cool. While Urban's Dredd is dead on for the character, the world and tone is really off from the comic and that's where I think 1995's Judge Dredd is more in line with that. Mega City One is a character in itself and Dredd is the straight man. Dredd is a very grounded action movie and I love that they introduced my gal, Cassandra Anderson. Thirby did an outstanding job going from the nervous rookie to the kick as Judge she would become. I liked the small scale of the film as a day in the life. Nothing wrong with that. I had hopes for Stallone's Dredd to do do the Apocalypse War as a sequel, with all it's death and destruction opening a portal to allow the Dark Judges to come through for a third movie. Aw well. I think if they do stories like Dredd where he's the dude walking into someone else's problem and making it his own like the Mad Max films there are plenty of stories to be told. For Dredd, it was very much about Cassandra Anderson, like Fury Road was about Furiosa.
Grew up on on Dredd in the late 80’s & early 90’s. Loved that they even included Choppers tag inside Peach Tree’s. The details showed it was made with a lot of love and respect for the source material.
I had never even heard that there was a new Judge Dredd movie until i found Dredd in the list of On Demand movies sometime towards the end of 2013. So it likely was poorly advertised. Great movie though. Karl Urban did absolutely fantastic, as per usual.

I thought getting the composer of Dredd Paul Leonard Morgan to do some of the music in Cyberpunk 2077 was a nice touch as well.
Amazing movie! The marketing definitely let it down big time though, I remember telling people about it and they were like "oh, is it a sequel to the Stallone movie?". Nowhere near enough people were aware of its existence sadly. Also, I don't think the fact that it was 3D-only helped, there were very few, if any, 2D showings around. I used to wear my "Make A Dredd Sequel" t-shirt a lot back then, I should dig it out! 😀
Yeah, the marketing dept for this current Dredd film were asleep on their job,LOL. I didn't even know there was a new Dredd film at the cinema, that's a very big no-no if you want your film to succeed. I caught this movie on dvd and wondered why it wasn't shown at the theatres.
I had this on Blu-Ray 3D and it was incredible
Totally deserves a sequel!!! Loved Karl Urban in this!
Personally I think DREDD hit the spot perfectly, an excellent rendition of a day in the life of and we get to meet Anderson as a nice nod
How an earth did that movie flop? One of the finest comic book adaptations ever made. Lena Headey is incredible as the villain.
So this was a comic thing ok I've only seen the movie.
Because it wasn’t advertised for crap. I didn’t hear it was even a thing til I saw the dvd for sale.
I think it was because of two things
1) It's comic genre (fan base) is limited somewhat compared to mainstream comics such as in the DCU & MCU
2) They should've made a series first then when that had bedded it after around five seasons hit everyone with the movie!
There's a good program made about this illustrating the history of AD Comics on Sky TV (I think a it's been a while since I watched it) it's really good if you want a background of the comic franchise.
Another factor is that the trailer was very bad and didn't accurately reflect the tone of the move.
She definitely was, great casting.
Saw it 3D at theater, still have the stub. Needs a sequel!
Great job, Minty. Love this film.
When I first watched Dredd I loved it and assumed a sequel was already in the works. Many years later, I'm still waiting.
i think this movie is amazing! so underrated and of course played by the most under rated actor ever carl urban. its awsome
Saw this in theaters in 3D, absolutely mind-blowing release for the time. The only other action movie to really impress me as much was Rambo (2008).
This has been in my top 3 comic book movies since the day it came out. It was so well done
I feel that a higher budgeted series would be amazing with Carl Urban as Dredd that could take place either directly after the events of "Dredd" of 6 months or a year later that explains the aftermath of the "peach trees" with the first few episodes showing a "day in the life" type stories that slowly culminate to the appearance of Judge Death and the dark judges I would definitely watch that
Forget a movie..a series is better like Mandalorian!
Oh Minty you finally did it. Well done lad!!!! Great review!!!
Anyways. I'm all done imaging. Time to go watch Guardians Of The Ragnarock Endgame No Way Home.
I still remember how few of my friends had any clue that this movie was coming out... It got completely lost in the shuffle.
Karl Urban "insisting on Dredd not taking his Helmet off", Henrey Cavill demanding "Gerald to be true to the books"
There should be a hall of Fame for those Actors who have fought for their Charcters.
Hey Minty how about a Top 10 of that?!
Yes! Yes! I wish this had a sequel!
Yes please!
They started production on a Mega City One TV show just before covid, Karl was rumored to be reprising the role. Unfortunately it seems to have bitten the dust.
Well done Minty, a great review of a great film!
Even this day I still wish Dredd still gonna sequel this is the most bad ass, comic book movie it were made.
one of my favorite franchises. we need a sequel or tv show!!
Dredd wasn't drawn with the bloated muscles of a bodybuilder, he was lanky, and thin, like Eastwood.
In the comics he is portrayed as both.
@@Abefroman-lq3md Not from the ones I have or remember.
Don't tease me. Would love to see a Strontium Dog show or movie, or Rogue Trooper or.......you get the idea.
@@Button101Man I think someone did make an animated movie of Strontium Dogs but didn’t ask permission so it was buried. Not many people know it but 2000AD was a leader in Punk fashion and to my knowledge were and are the only mag that had Punks in the background as citizens 😱.
@@Button101Man I’ve just had a look and there is heaps of 2000AD stuff on TH-cam, thank you Lord Internet 🤩.
@@Toadonthehill. I've previously watched at least one documentary about the beginning of 2000AD on TH-cam.
I went blindly to the theatre when i saw this. Me and my friend looked at eachother saying..holy cowww..this is true overkill and loved it!
And it was released on 3D blu-ray…if you have a system that can play it.
@CoraxCatcher I do have that Blu Ray, but I no longer have the TV to take advantage of that .
This movie is awesome!!!! Needs a part 2 asap!!!
Dredd was a comic book movie masterpiece. It should have gotten critical acclaim. So bummed it didn't do better in theaters or get a sequel.
I grew up on 2000ad comics. I didnt mind the Stallone version, liked seeing all the characters, ABC warriors and The Angel Boys but Dredd was perfect and kept it true to the comics.
We definitely need more movies made from 2000AD
Loved the comic 2000AD & boy did this film not disappoint me or my friends, I pray there's a sequel some day to Karl Urbans version.
I agree with Mr. Urban. It was an excellent movie that was not properly marketed.
Every time I tell someone to watch this movie, they come back to me saying WOW!!! Where has this film been hiding?
I have loved Dredd since I was a boy.
Except from that travesty with Stallone.
Dreed is by far my favorite modern action movie.
Absolute masterpiece - I am another person that had zero awareness of this film until it came to video release - an utter travesty, but Minty is right, Avengers and TDKR were devouring ALL the attention that year.
Same here. I saw this in the theatre and was blown away with every scene! I was speechless during the Mama gattling gun scene!
I was never one who pop pooed this movie! It hits all the marks for a great comic book character movie! One of the Best!
Yeah this is so so much better than that monstrosity that Sylvester Stallone was in.
Urban utterly nailed it as Dredd.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Masterpiece. It needs more recognition.
HATED the first one with Stallone, a cheap cop out to be recognized over source material accurateness!
One of the most underratted movies ever made. Urban was perfect in the role. The most bad ass moment in the movie is when Anderson scans the people in the other room and describes Dredd as order but "there is something behind the order something almost.....". As if the almost is something truly dark.
Such a criminally underrated flick!
I demand a sequel
We all do but prefer a series instead!
Another great video, Minty!
Yet again featuring one of my favorite films!
A true underrated classic!
Karl Urban rules
A shame?! It'll be a crime! LIFE IN AN ISO-CUBE!
It’s a terrible shame that it didn’t do well at the box office.
Not sure if Urban ever read any of the novels, but he hit it spot on
Dredd is far, far superior film to both the DKR and the Avengers.
They're not even comparable.
I would rate this in the top 5 best movies of the 2010's.
Grew up on on Dredd in the late 80’s & early 90’s. Loved that they even included Choppers tag inside Peach Tree’s. The details showed it was made with a lot of love and respect for the source material.
Always worth watching, great movie!
One of my favorite 2000 A.D. jokes was the one time that Dredd took his helmet off, it was censored.
I had never even heard that there was a new Judge Dredd movie until i found Dredd in the list of On Demand movies sometime towards the end of 2013.
So it likely was poorly advertised.
Great movie though. Karl Urban did absolutely fantastic, as per usual.
