Sohyang is my queen
So Hyang is incredible. She’s honestly the best vocalist in the world currently and one of the best of all time. Her mix and head voice, in particular, are incredible and basically unparalleled. You should check out “Arirang Alone” and “Everyone” next. They’re even better and she belts EVEN HIGHER. But she has dozens of incredible world class performances. This isn’t even her best because she’s always incredible.
Best vocalist in the world? Natalie Weiss and Vanessa Amorosi would like a word. Both are more complete vocalists from bottom to top. Sohyang has a very slight edge in a couple of upper belts but it's negligible. And Sohyang could never compete with Natalie or Vanessa in lows, mid belts, or agility. And their head voice is about even. Sohyang also tends to use way too much twang and sounds extremely nasally. She is very top heavy and relies on g5 and above to sound impressive. I have a great deal of respect for her as a vocalist but to me she is no where near as complete as Natalie and Vanessa.
Joshua Rexrode I disagree. Sohyang has significantly better head voice than them both. Natalie and Vanessa are fantastic, but Natalie rarely even ventures above G# and she thins out her mix quite a bit as she passes around E5. Vanessa is great, but her mix is very heady. Sohyang, at least when not sick, maintains a balanced mix all the way up to C#6 and is much more consistent reaching up there. Her mix is also far more resonant than Natalie’s or Vanessa’s. They are all very well rounded vocalists and have comparable supported ranges. Natalie and Vanessa are tied for lows with Sohyang being just behind with, as of 2019, quite consistent support down to F#3 (vs. Eb3). Middle register really is tied for all of them, with Natalie being the weakest here in terms of power and resonance. Sohyang wins upper register both in terms of support and in terms of mix and resonance in a margin similar to Vanessa and Natalie’s low notes. And Sohyang’s head voice is quite a bit better. Vanessa drops support at C#6 and Natalie at D6/Eb6. Sohyang is flawless with her support in head voice up to E6 always and she has one supported F6, similar to Natalie’s D6. Agility goes to Natalie, with Vanessa and Sohyang being well endowed. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. I’d argue Sohyang outcompetes them slightly, but you can easily make an argument for one of the other two. Your stance on her twang is entirely personal opinion. Twang is an excellent technique and allows for Sohyang’s MUCH superior resonance that high up. And she’s not nasal at all whether you think so or not. Vanessa uses the same technique, but with a thinner mix and even more twang. Natalie doesn’t but rarely mixes that high anyway.

Don't worry. You're not the only one slapping your own face after watching one of her performances. 😁 I've done that way too many times when I watch Sohyang too. As I've seen in other comments, don't miss Sohyang's "Everyone" and "Arirang Alone". For "Arirang Alone", the video on TH-cam is fine to use. But, you may want to use the video in Vimeo with proper English subtitle for "Everyone". Without giving too much spoiler, there's a part in the "Everyone" performance which subtitle is pretty much a must have.
Finally the vocal queen is found. Your reaction is very interesting-keep going. Please watch her performances with "Everyone" and "Lean on me"
Sam seeing Sohyang for the first time! Couldn't click on the thumbnail fast enough! She started as a Contemporary Christian singer at a young age, I understand, and in her early 20s, soon after marrying, was diagnosed with ovarian lesions that were pre-cancerous, mandating surgery that ended her chances of having children. Leaning on her faith, she recovered and continued singing (albeit through bouts of pneumonia and ongoing respiratory and liver problems) and soon all of Asia was bowing to her, in disbelief. But, as if she didn't have enough chest voice/head voice vocal skills, the big transformation in her singing was when she flew to the USA, to train with noted vocal coach Seth Riggs. He stretched her range, and he trained her to develop the mixed voice she just slapped you across the face with. Now, listen to her praise our God in "EVERYONE" (with English subs), written by a Christian Korean composer--it has literally reduced other YT vocal coaches to tears and their comments to just superfluous ditherings. (Quoting "Rebecca [Moore] Vocal Athlete", in tears, after "You Raise Me Up": "Wha-wha what do you want me to say?!) This performance will show you why she's known, throughout Asia (and much of the world), as simply, "The Queen." Have a "wee taste" of your favorite spirits in that cup, for this one, Sam--you'll need it, afterwards, to slow your pulse and speak coherently!

I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of my all time favorites. With due respect to the original artists, however, Sohyang’s version is now my favorite! Recommendations? One not mentioned much by others that I absolutely love is Where Are You. Oh Holy Night is the best version I have ever heard of that song. Everyone is a classic. I also like a lot of her gospel music. You simply can’t go wrong with Sohyang!
baspringer Same. Me mum used to force me to sing to their songs such that it traumatised me so much (and those who had to listen to me) that I avoided all their songs thereafter. But Sohyang made me overcome my trauma. Love her. I would listen to her sing the phone book
Among Sohyang's performances, there's no stage to say that it's the best. Because every time she comes out, she goes beyond the top and shows masterpiece performances
not only one of thebest singers in her genres,but she does all of her own arrangements... amazingly gifted, and incredibly disciplined as far as her commitment to her craft.. many of hours hours of practice along with that amazing gift

I have been following Sohyang since I first listen to her singing. Awesome voice, angelic at its best. The best thing she's always doing is hold on to the notes longer which I find so amazing. Hope to see Sohyang in one of her concerts

Most of her live performances available in the TH-cam channel were performed in the "Weekly" competition shows in Korea. That means she had only one week to select, rearrange a specific song in her own style and practice herself with the accompanists and background singers.
And almost all of the songs have been performed this "perfectly".

Of course, Korean broadcaster's special efforts and skills increase the quality of the show. But those of the singers are incredible.

Hi Sam greetings from another Scottish musician here. I stumbled on this fantastic lady a few months ago and believe me bud you aint heard nothing yet. Check out all her other videos they just get better and better. So Hyang IMHO is the best female vocalist I have heard her pitch, note length, range, dynamic's, breathe controll, emotions, resonance she has it all simply amazing. I would suggest either "Everyone" or "Where are you" next" but to be honest whatever you pick for your next reaction you wont be disappointed. Cheers bud happy listening.

Great reaction! Very insightful. She has an extensive catalog and it's all good. She is primarily a gospel singer, that why you hear the influence. Arirang Alone (pronounced Ah Dee Dang, there is no R sound in the Korean language) and "Everyone ", are great places to start. "Everyone" is a 7+minute master class in vocal technique and control.

What an adorable reaction! It's insightful that at your first pause, you were already convinced that she is a master of the craft. I was also amused by your first exclamation of "yes" during the run when Sohyang switched from mix to head and then back. I was wondering why and you explained it later in the video. I was laid flat on the floor when I watched this Sohyang video and couldn't get up for days :-) I may not have fully recovered yet three years later. Sohyang began as a gospel singer more than 20 years and remains a devout Christian. It's no accident you heard that strong gospel influence in her rendition. This is my personal favorite performance by her, only because of its emotional context to me. In terms of vocal quality, there are many other equally, some would argue, even better ones. For your consideration, I suggest you give a listen to Sohyang's cover of Arirang Alone in her native language, where she would once again give a stunning performance. But from a purely vocal coach point of view. Sohyang - "everyone" is a must-see, every different texture of her voice is shown in this, and its by the vocal suicide for ANY other singer. 7 min of pure vocal masterclass.... yes thats right... 7 minutes.

But her full vocal range is (D#3-C#6A6) I would recommend Dream from "KOMS" Sustained Bflat5 in balanced mix,.. And D6,.... Mona Lisa,.. Multyple Bb5,.. And B5,.... WHERE are you octave jump from B4-B5,...... And a lot more
This is just the beginning of what she can do. Most react to this one since most everyone knows this sing. She will NEVER sing a song as it was written. She makes each song as if it was her own. She has INSANE range, way higher than this song. Most of her LIVE performances are SO CLEAN, its as if they were studio recordings. She is a perfectionist. Her first vocal coach was Seth Riggs, which was the coach of Michael Jackson. I am not sure if anyone in Korea coached her, but she has taken care of her voice, and today, at age 42, keeps getting better, when most singers today peak out about 26. I am not a singer, but am a musician, and have heard a lot of singers in my 58 years, and just to my ear, and noticing the technique I can see, and how consistent she is, she is the best female vocalist on the planet for me anyway. There are many great singers, but she is a MASTER Vocalist. Great reaction.

I've gotten way too addicted to reactions and learning of these crazy singers. Here's some must do ones.
Her Arirang Alone is an easy next vid choice of hers(as good or better). Then Lean on me(crazy high mixed).
Zhou Shen "memory" or "a time to say goodbye"(he'll probably give you some Dimash, "what the" vibes). Also "doomsday spaceship" duet is simply badass.
Lara Fabian "adiagio" "Je suis malade" "You're not from here"....those 3 especially....each from the same live concert. "From Lara with Love" I guess it was called. I have zero doubt she'll blow your mind. Everyone reacting is always amazed they'd not heard of her, often moved. There's even a clip of her singing in.....twelve....languages. She has a 20 second belt in "you're not from here".
And of course Marcelito Pomoy if you've somehow not already seen those(just make sure it's the wish bush ones).
Anyway, you really need to hear all of those, reaction or not.

You can literally pick any of her performances and you will be blown away. She's been doing this for more than 20 years now, and is singing to comfort and console people, not for fame or money.
I'd personally check out her cover of "Arirang Alone" next (it's a cover of a famous folk song talking about the re-unification of the Korean peninsula and the end of the civil war there) . Sohyang has some truly immaculate english performances, but seeing her emote in her native language is a sight of its own. Keep the goodness coming, cheers..C:

I’m 73 years old and let me introduce you and your subscribers to an unheralded little known but world-class female vocalist in her day (from my generation )who had a unique recognizably ethereal voice and a small but worldwide cult following in the 1960s early 70s. Her name was Morgana King and she had a Celestial heavenly angelic voice, unique and mesmerizing. When a song by her came over the radio, within the first 20 seconds you KNEW it was Morgana King and you stopped whatever you were doing to listen in rapt attention. She’ll transport your spirit to another realm.
If I may so bold as to suggest you and your audience privately listen to the following 3 songs that will silence your mind and open the floodgate of your heart. They were posted by a “ Morganafan” who added remarkable imagery that greatly enhances the emotional impact of each of these recorded songs. Her voice will transport you and your readership to a state of heavenly bliss.
