I have a KTM 1190R, shot out to check if that box would fit my pannier rack, I don't think it will. I currently carry the KTM toolkit plus a tubeless tire repair kit with CO2 bottles. When I put the bags on I carry an enduro toolkit and compressor as well.

I took the factory tool kit and replaced it with the same tools but made by Craftsman, Snap on and Knipex. Add some odd & end tools that I've found handy over the years, scissors, Nite-Itze, etc. I carry them in the tray under the seat of my Beemer R1150R.
I made up my own First Aid kit as well, with what I think I'll need, not what some manufacturers think I need. I carry it in a rear case along with my Dynaplug air pump, flashlight and all.

I truly enjoy your videos, they’re instructive and also funny, thanks a lot.
I have the Touratech one installed on my R1250GSA; a few weeks ago I went off road and during the ride the swigarm went all the way up (they call it suspension bottoming), and the toolbox broke the rear fender (near the bolts that hold it), and it was a mess because the bolts broke and it was a pain in the .... to remove the bolts.
My bike is NOT the lower kit version, so is important to tell all the lower kit version owners that this box (the Touratech, and the one you are showing) is incompatible, it will hit the swing arm and damage badly.
    Thanks for your videos 👍👍👍👍

It makes sense now that you mention it. This is the same reason why the exhaust is on the opposite side of the swing arm. It might not matter to those that don’t ride off-road but those of us that do should consider this. Thanks

I bought this off Amazon. Solid black. Those clamps are garbage. I went to the hardware store and bought 4 of the 3/4” regular clamps. The bracket you screwed into the forward side comes with another one incase you mount it on the right side, but it tabs inward for a different bike. But if you flip it up and screw both on the forward side, you can add another clamp. I have two clamps on the front and back. Just use the holes that are there on the back with the 3/4” clamps and it is solid now.

Great tool box. I got it today. In 15 minutes you make it waterproof. Take the screws that hold all the metal case around. Split the plastic case in a half. Remove the light silicone from the edges and apply your preffered glue or silicone . Put plastic box together, let it dry, install metal covers with screws and it will be perfect. Thank you for your tips for the instalation, greatly appreciated

You have to take the fender off (that weird part in the instructions) because when off-road, you may use all the travel in your suspension and the fender will interfere with the box. Something might break.

Great find. Why not submerge the box in water before mounting it on the bike to find out if it is waterproof? Actually the suggestion for removing the rear mudguard for off-road use is a pretty valid one. The rear mudguard does very little in terms of mud/water spray but BMW had to put it there on all of the for compliance purposes. The real reason for removing it for off-road use is to prevent it from breaking (which they are prone to do) when the rear wheel hops up and down. You will notice a lot of GS/GSA bikes that do serious off-road riding are missing that mudguard because they broke for this very reason YMMV

    • @LongWayHome
      @LongWayHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Mine fell off during a 5 day off road tour because i forgot to tighten it properly and trust me, there was a huge line of mud going up my licence plate and my top box. They don't claim the box is waterproof (neither is Touratech) since submerging it has to do with water pressure as well. But splash proof which should be similar to riding in the rain is fine. Thanks for the good comment though.

A few years ago I had a great ride in Cape Town SA and got a chance to visit a shop over there that I had previously ordered from “Wild at Heart” you may have heard of them. Anyway, while there they presented me with a great solution for reinforcing the mudguard. It’s a molded metal bracket that fits over the top of the attachment points and it has done great job ever since. Up until then I had broken 2 mudguards but to be fair I am a pretty aggressive off-road rider with my GSA.

Long Way Home - Excellent video! As it turns out, I don't have the GSA model with the more durable rigging for my side and top cases. I have a GS and use the cutouts built into the motorcycle for my top & side cases. Sadly, I don't think your tool box discovery will work for me. But, it's good to know about; and whenever the time comes for me to trade my GS for a GSA (or to change out my top/side cases for the ones that use those case frames), I'll be looking at this toolbox.
I keep rain gear in my right side case. I keep 4 liters of bottled water, jumper cables, small metric tool kit, tire pressure gauge, and a tire repair kit in my left side case, and keep my top case empty for my helmet whenever I decide to pull over and leave my moto alone. I also have a tank bag with is for my wallet, cell phone, and other accessories I may need quick access to. I can easily see the value of the toolbox you demonstrated.
    Great video, thanks!
PS - I couldn't find the "small" thumbs up as you described, so I went ahead and pressed the Big Thumbs Up. ;)

Nice video.... but frankly I was surprised that you looked at a piece of paper that came with it telling you to remove your fender in off-road and you just shrugged your shoulders without warning people why that says that. As some have already mentioned, if your rear suspension compresses enough whether you hit a nasty pothole or riding off-road (and riding 2up off road it will do that fairly often) - this toolbox design -and all the others that look like it - will shear off your rear fender arm. This can also turn into a dangerous safety issue if the arm rotates into the spokes and lock up your rear wheel - as well as damage a few spokes. This is no reason for anyone shrugging their shoulders and putting aside a clear instruction without investigating it and warning viewers about this safety issue. Otherwise, I enjoyed your video. Keep them coming.
Having said that, finding a proper on-board safe lockable waterproof toolbox for the 1200GS LC has been mission impossible for me. I've failed to find anything. I would like to throw this challenge on your shoulders. Can you find one for us and post something about it.... PLZ?

Ok so you said the acorn nuts go on the left and nylon nuts on the right but then you said don’t put the acorn on the tightening side (left) because they bottom out before becoming tight so that means acorns on the right and nylons on the left 🤔. Let me tell you something about the Touratech box. I bought it last year from their store in Germany for 149,9€. That is somewhat cheaper that the price in the US. I wouldn't have paid that much not even if it was made of gold. The difference to what you have is my pannier mounting system. I have Touratech Zega Pro 2 panniers and for this you need another type of holder. On the back you have a bent sheet metal that fits between the left pannier holder and the bar that connects it to the right one. As I put it together I noticed that there wasn't enough space for the lid. With the lid out, I could mount it, but I could not put it back on. If I wasn't an engineer, I would have send everything back and would have received a working replacement or my money back. But instead I took the pliers and bent it to a shape that allowed it to work. I was pretty disappointed with Touratech after this but I put it on the fact that they wore going through an insolvency.
Anyway. I had some issues that forced me to buy new pannier racks (the same) and I also need a new sheet metal part to fit the toolbox. I went to Touratech again and they said they will send me one. I hope free of charge as usual. I an curious how it will work this time.
In conclusion, if you live in Europe and what Touratech stuff, look for them somewhere closer to home, like Germany of Austria. They might be a lot cheaper. Secondly, made in Germany does not always means that it is perfect.

      Long Way Home easy,
I have the also hideous and impractical original panier’s on my Explorer. To protect those I’ve even used my wife’s foot as a crash protection by my latest mishap in Morroco 🙈
Although I am thinking about soft luggage for the future, luckily Givi or even SW-motech are offering a detachable scaffolding now, i think i can tolerate those.. I only use panier’s on vacation 2up so i prefer the clean look.
Great channel, greetings 🤟 David 🇨🇿

What the hell is in your water? Intact rubber gloves worn to check for leaks. Then the next shot there are holes in them and even fingers sticking out. That's some serious water. JK. Great review. 👍 Oh wait, there's a button to click for thumbs up. I don't think things through all the time.

Has to be the worst instruction video I’ve seen. You don’t see where the brackets are mounted, there are two lengths of bolts. Tip: mount the bracket then show it mounted. Which way up is the box?

Good design , R&D plus advertising isnt cheap. Raw material choice is probably of a higher quality also. The fakes dont have any of those costs yet ride off the back of Touratech.

3:17 This toolbox is not recommended for low suspension model, and the rear fender will limit the suspension travel with the box in place while offroading.
