it really works great when you have more then one vehicle youd like a winch on. ways to make it faster would be have both front and rear wires pre-wired and hanging there (this is what i have) and then for storage, i take another reciever tube, weld it to a fair size plate (to spread out the load) and either weld the plate or bolt it to your floor. you can pull the winch out and be ready in under a minute with this setup.
I have a similar set up on my truck. I love being able to mount it to both the front and back of my truck. I used a 2" hitch receiver inside my truck bed to mount it during storage. It makes for quick removal, So it doesn't go bouncing around My truck bed.
I have a similar setup on my 2013 JK. My winch is mounted to a cradle, with hitches front and rear like yours. The only difference with mine is that I have the power cables permanently ran through my jeep front and back. I used 00 cable, with quick connects on the ends, and have a disconnect up at the battery. This allows me to move my winch front or back as needed, simply plug into the quick connect I have at each bumper, and pull away. I can then disconnect the quick connects at the battery when I am not wheeling, and I don't run the risk of someone messing with my battery through the outside connections.
Yep. Winch in a cradle. Quick Disconnects on front, rear, and winch. Marine battery switch at the battery so no hot wires while not in use. Works great, except remember to put the winch in before you get stuck. Lugging 150lbs is a bitch in the mud.
Did you include a quick disconnect system to attach to a buddies vehicle? I’ve had a Cummins truck drive off the side of the road. I didn’t have any traction (ice cover road) to winch him out but if I’m now doing this system so I can always throw my winch in someone else’s hitch.
Just hit subscribe. Great information on mounting, storage etc. The idea of hiding the winch when not in use is what brought me here. JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ordered. Thanks again. No Jeep, vintage 1977 Ford F150 XLT Ranger 4X4
I think the pros WAY outweigh the cons. The ability to pull from behind or from the front, swap the winch to other vehicles and as you noted help prevent theft are invaluable. Here's another slick thing I do. I have a receiver mounted to my flatbed tilting trailer. This allows towing a dead vehicle onto the trailer for tow ! The receiver mounted winch is way to versatile to look over !
I like it because I could move the winch from one vehicle to another. Also I have a Commander which fills the role of off road and kid holler. No need to keep the winch on all the time.
I like your setup. I'm doing the same thing on my truck only I'm usually pulling people out of the ditch or out of a snow bank in the winter time. My 25 ft table has quick connects on both ends so I can either run the winch on the front or the back and the quick connect allows me to plug it in and use it at either end and never worry about whether I'm connecting it correctly because it'll only fit one way.😊
cool and useful video, the home made battery auxiliary posts are awesome, your dad did a great job, about the portable winch, i had that in my WJ for years, used it with a warn front hitch receiver then i got stuck once and forgot the winch home, so i decided to put the winch into the stock front bumper hiding it and i'm glad i did it but of course it has pros and cons ... watched lots of your video, please keep doing that!
I would have put a hitch receiver inside to secure the winch, and permanent disconnects from the battery to the front and back. I think it would be a lot faster to set up.
Might rattle a little, but a ratchet strap for tension would solve that. I plan to do this in my jeep so I can pull myself off the snow pile when plowing.
Who wants to have a hitch on their vehicle all the time? If it is just for offroad ok, but I drive my 4Runner daily and the wich is heavy, like adding a passenger plus it could grow legs and walk away easily
Use an ATV winch combined with a pully system. Less weight and as strong as you want. Just put an extra snatchblock or more. Electrical connector in the front and back. Also with a smaller winch the current is less. This all when time does not matter.
Just get some heavy duty jumper cable clips (800 amp rated) and call it a day. That is what I am doing today for mine. I can also loan it to someone else that way. Quick disconnect on cables close to winch like yours
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of doing something similar as my LJ is my daily driver. Normally I'd leave the winch off (and keep it in the garage) and only install it when I'm heading out wheeling. I love the battery adapters (I'm going to make a pair) but I'm thinking of hooking up a female plug "semi-permanently" to the battery with the adapters. That way I have a quick connect/disconnect w/o opening the hood for the winch or other high draw applications like jump starting or running my 1200W inverter.
to secure it I personally would have taken another one of those female hitch adapters from the front bumper and attach that right to the plate it's bolted to in the back. pull the pin & slide it out
I knew if I looked long enough I would find a setup like what I had in my head. Minus the rollcage. Michigan so not many rocks. 2in of lift due to HD springs. M\T tires. 4.56 gears Front\Rear lockers and soon a fabbed front bumper and a mount in the back of my ZJ for a winch. Awesome setup!
This is an awesome idea, if you only go 4x4ing a few times a year you won't use extra petrol driving around the place with all that extra weight, leave the winch in the shed until you actually go off road, or in my case I think I might have a designated spot for it in my camp trailer, AND I could put a hitch point on the back of the trailer to! And run the winch off the deep cycle battery in the trailer
For my battery connections I'm using fleet terminals on all my trucks. I mostly mess with old Dodges, and they tend to have 3+ wires going to the positive terminal, so I solder on copper logs. For my winch I'm going to put the cables going to my starter etc. onto the post and then put a standard nut on, then use the remainder of the post sticking up and the wing nuts that come with the fleet terminals to attach my winch cables.
You could leave you quick connect and run it outta the grill, or desreatly somewhere. Then take a set of jumper cables and chop off one end and add a quick connect. Then you can plug and go with your winch or a set of jumper cables without popping your hood. You could even add in a disconnect switch in the cab if you don't wanna worry about sending power to an unplugged connector.
instead of a tray to hold your winch, you should add another receiver inside the Jeep. Then you simply snap on to store, and snap off when you want the winch. No need to fumble around with the mounting nuts.
I like the idea of storing your winch out of the weather but why not just leave the cables hooked to the battery with the quick disconnect? For me that would be more of a hassle than actually attaching the winch all the time. Great idea! Great Job! Thanks for your videos!I've been reading the other comments after I already posted mine but one made a point about using one winch for multiple vehicles, that is a great idea! Vehicles at the farm or in my case my brother and I could run this set up and split the cost and use one winch. Brilliant!
Another option for your winch cable is to rig a set of jumper cable clamps (4) that plug into your winch cables ends (both ends) to serve as heavy duty jumper cables.
Great idea for when the times comes to need winched. Only one comment, maybe paint the winch hold down frame assembly the same color as the rollbar. It looks unpainted in this view. Back in the day, we had a portable electric from Ramsey that was a small 1,500 lbs pull and it came with a slide on bracket to the winch that slipped over a trailer hitch ball. Carried the snatch block etc. and it helped with lighter weight winching while also being light enough and small enough to carry and store. Much has changed since that time period but the issue at hand, portable winch is always something to consider vs. permanent.
I really like the way you set up your winches. I also like the quick connect .could you tell me or have a video on what kind of cable to buy and how to hook up Thanks you much for the ex video
That’s a 50 cal ammo box, not a 50 mm. The MA-deuce is the last weapon in the Army’s arsenal. Otherwise a great video. I’ve been thinking of doing something similar on my truck. Good job
I'd mount another HF hitch in the back so the winch can be secured with one pin. I'd also run cables front and back permently so you can connect jumper cables or a charger without poping the hood.
I think this is a great idea I have a lexus lx450 and the back seats can be removed . I was thinking about getting a seat from the junk yard and using the frame of the seat to attach a holding bracket onto it . This way I can just remove the bracket and replace a seat when its family time .
Jesus christ I'd hate to get behind this guy on the trail. 45 minute ordeal just to winch yourself out of a jam? Wire up permanent leads front and rear with quick connects. Bolt a receiver down in the back of the jeep just like you have on the front bumper. Pin the winch into it. Its safe and secure Pull pin, remove winch. No fucking around with wrenches and tools and bolts and shit. No popp the hood and screwing with wing nuts to drop and lose in the dark or in the water/mud. Screw all this rube-goldberg mess.
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for a removable setup like that for front or rear. A marine type battery would work like the copper attachments you made or there are adapters to make a regular battery into a marine type wing nut connection.
nice job! could you leave the connector wires (pigtail) on the battery, rolled up and stuffed out of the way under the hood? just a thought. another stellar video by the Bleeping Jeep Team.
I want a quick winch setup for safety concerns. so I'm wheeling with a group and one guy gets too close and starts teetering off the edge of a cliff or steep drop-off. I want to be able to set up winch as fast as possible to be able to render assistance. I have mine in the toolbox of my truck with a reciever welded to the box. I have cables ran to front and back ready to go with quick connects. all I have to do is shove the winch in the reciever put in the pin plug it in and I'm winching. about 45 seconds to a minute to setup
awesome and informative as always. I was considering doing this exact thing and you brought up a few points I hadn't considered, and also gave me some ideas. thanks!
A receiver hitch inside the vehicle would probably take up too much room. Hit the bike shop for some quick releases used on front wheels. Kipp adjustable handles would be even better but they're kind of expensive.
Tyler, So, what is that model winch and what is the cradle you are using? I'm considering some version of this to share a winch between several trucks and rigs in our home/ business that all have various receivers that could be used . Thanks.
another way to mount that into the inside of your jeep would be to use the same mount as u used on the front. another idea instead of caring a wrench around to lossen your bolts is to weld a bolt across the head making it a thumb screw.
Good ideas and ingenuity but at 7:59 you see the positive battery cable not pressing down and making full contact with the copper winch lead terminal simply due to the tapered battery terminal design. Your battery cable lugs will be fighting the taper of the battery terminals as the taper increases, instead of pressing down firmly to secure the copper plate. All the current is reliant on a thin copper ring rather than a lug terminal with much more surface area. You probably would realize this down the road if the winch were used more, but the zip-ties on the coiled winch cables kind of tell their own story :-)
I just keep my winch at home unless im going wheeling. Then when im wheeling i throw it on the back hitch. And if you want to be cautious cause you will be leaving your Jeep. You can just take it off and throw it in the back. Its not hooked up so it should be easy.
Why not just run a harness to the front and back permanently. Just leave the quick connect cable sticking out. so you can just slide in the winch pop in a pin and connect the power and pull yourself or a friend out in minutes.
it really works great when you have more then one vehicle youd like a winch on. ways to make it faster would be have both front and rear wires pre-wired and hanging there (this is what i have) and then for storage, i take another reciever tube, weld it to a fair size plate (to spread out the load) and either weld the plate or bolt it to your floor. you can pull the winch out and be ready in under a minute with this setup.
Another receiver mounted in the cargo area would make for a quick, secure mount for the winch. another great vid.
Great idea, no matter how long it takes to set up it’s faster then not having it available, respect from Arizona !!!!
I have a similar set up on my truck. I love being able to mount it to both the front and back of my truck. I used a 2" hitch receiver inside my truck bed to mount it during storage. It makes for quick removal, So it doesn't go bouncing around My truck bed.

Your dad is a clever guy. Nice work.
Really like the idea. Great video it’s nice to have the choice of front or rear pull capabilities and the idea of keeping it out of the weather
You could run two sets of wires and make it quicker
Love that battery terminal idea. Im going to be making those for all my tractors!
Right on
Yeah! That is brilliant.
cool and useful video, the home made battery auxiliary posts are awesome, your dad did a great job, about the portable winch, i had that in my WJ for years, used it with a warn front hitch receiver then i got stuck once and forgot the winch home, so i decided to put the winch into the stock front bumper hiding it and i'm glad i did it but of course it has pros and cons ... watched lots of your video, please keep doing that!
This was my plan until I actually picked up a winch.
I would have put a hitch receiver inside to secure the winch, and permanent disconnects from the battery to the front and back. I think it would be a lot faster to set up.
+Sawyer Glanton or permanent disconnect at the front and extend the cables on the winch so it doesn't matter where you are.
That is what I was thinking

How can you focus on the winch while children are being slaughtered in the background?
Exactly! Slaughtering children is way more fun!
Survival situation lol
God save the children!
winch around the kids necks.. lots of fun

+artardFTW I was thinking of quick-disconnects like on the ammo can, but that's an even better idea.
+kamerad like the latch that's on the lid? I think it may hold but could bust free in a roll over
Yeah, like that. I wasn't too sure about it myself but I've seen some fairly thick ones that might hold up.
+kamerad I guess there's only one real way to find out.. lol

I think the battery adapters your dad made are awesome and a easy DIY
Those copper plates are genius
Thanks for that little gem. I’m doing that tomorrow.
those copper plates are going to heat up and create alot of resistance because they are nowhere as tight as they should be. bad idea imho.
7 years old but still helpful thank you

instead of a tray to hold your winch, you should add another receiver inside the Jeep. Then you simply snap on to store, and snap off when you want the winch. No need to fumble around with the mounting nuts.
Good idea, that's what I said 4 months ago but he didn't reply. Lol
good idea, how would you keep that from rattling?
MetaView7 , thats what i did. bottom plate under floorboard and used the receiver as on the front bumper.
Sawyer Glanton , did the same. daaaa. toss a blanket over it to keep prying eyes off
yep, that is what my son came up with.
I learned so much from watching this. Thank you.

Made it exactly like this. Front and back. Thank you.
I would like to see an Ohm meter hooked to those battery terminal plates.
Nice idea, a touch complicated for set up!
Jesus christ I'd hate to get behind this guy on the trail. 45 minute ordeal just to winch yourself out of a jam? Wire up permanent leads front and rear with quick connects. This is an older video - BUT how is this still working? What size / gage wire did you use- I really like that winch bracket- Vic in Utah
This seems to be an are of debate...... What amp rating is your quick disconnect and what AWG is your winch cables? Thank you.
I like the way your dad thinks, flattening the copper pipe for the battery terminals is a clever idea !
Thanks Tyler, Gives me some ideas about what i need to do about a winch.
You can mount a receiver in your cargo area to store winch. Great video. Ty
Thank you for video, now i know some things i need to consider. Im going to use varioblock system, for tow hook. Its like click system.
Hey bud why dont you weld a brace between your roll bar with a receiver so you can secure it that way then all you gotta do is pull the pin
awesome and informative as always. I was considering doing this exact thing and you brought up a few points I hadn't considered, and also gave me some ideas. thanks!
I love this and much more in depth video on the roll cage
What's a good size winch for the rear of my TJ? Something that doesn't eat up too my room in the "bed" of my Jeep.
I want a removable winch setup but this is to much.
A receiver hitch inside the vehicle would probably take up too much room. Hit the bike shop for some quick releases used on front wheels. Kipp adjustable handles would be even better but they're kind of expensive.
Which receiver mount did you get for the front bumper?
Tyler, So, what is that model winch and what is the cradle you are using? I'm considering some version of this to share a winch between several trucks and rigs in our home/ business that all have various receivers that could be used
. Thanks.
I guess if it works for him that's all the matters.
Hey Tyler! Speaking of wiring a jeep... I'd like to see you guys do a video of a 7 pin wiring harness for an overlanding rig to tow a small RV.
Put your make and model into e-trailers website. There's probably already a good video there
Would love to see the roll cage setup in that XJ.
Love it. You have convinced me. Love your videos btw. Always top notch and interesting.
Loved the "fine print".
Have seen the same setup with a receiver mount inside the truck or jeep so you can just pin it in place inside.
another way to mount that into the inside of your jeep would be to use the same mount as u used on the front.
another idea instead of caring a wrench around to lossen your bolts is to weld a bolt across the head making it a thumb screw.
What size winch plug do you have,
It’s a concealed carry winch…Nice to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it…kinda like me 45ACP.
Who makes those bumpers?
That was one GREAT vid my friend! Well done indeed
How many lbs pulling capacity is your winch?
Good for counter weight particularly on the rear for steep declines.
Were did y’all get the roll cage or is it hand built looking in to one for my Cherokee
very nice Tyler!
great job!
Where do you route that quick connect wire from the front and back?
Good ideas and ingenuity but at 7:59 you see the positive battery cable not pressing down and making full contact with the copper winch lead terminal simply due to the tapered battery terminal design. Your battery cable lugs will be fighting the taper of the battery terminals as the taper increases, instead of pressing down firmly to secure the copper plate. All the current is reliant on a thin copper ring rather than a lug terminal with much more surface area. You probably would realize this down the road if the winch were used more, but the zip-ties on the coiled winch cables kind of tell their own story :-)
Ya, once you get lockers front and rear... the winch doesn't get used much
⚡️ Have you had battery sparks due to saddle connection to the battery and not a clampdown? ⚡️
Awesome set up!
Anyone ever used jumper cable style clamps for the lines? Wondering if that could work for making it much quicker to set up and tear down.
Hi Tyler. This is Tyler
lots of good ideas, thanks.
how about securing the winch inside the cargo area with another hitch receiver?
Nice clear video. No music! Yay!!!
I just keep my winch at home unless im going wheeling. Then when im wheeling i throw it on the back hitch.
And if you want to be cautious cause you will be leaving your Jeep. You can just take it off and throw it in the back. Its not hooked up so it should be easy.
if it was my truck i would have left the terminal wires mounted to the battery just cause I'm lazy
the copper plates are barely touching the posts and dont look like they are touching the terminals at all. that looks like a shotty connection
So if your buddy gets stuck he can use your winch in his reciever hitch.,.
Ratcheting wrench for the WIN!!!!
Where can I get that bumper?
Just my opinion.. but id putt another hitch mound in the storage place to slide the pin in and be done... just a thought..
Do you like your HF winch? I'm in your neck of the woods and don't think I'll use it much. However id like to have it as a good insurance policy.
He said he had never used it.
Nice video Tyler. Is Kevin O from WayALife?
Why not leave the battery adapter on?
You could do a pin instead of those bolts too
The copper connectors are going to burn your winch out in no time. No way to get a good solid connection.
Why? Can you explain?
Why not just run a harness to the front and back permanently. Just leave the quick connect cable sticking out. so you can just slide in the winch pop in a pin and connect the power and pull yourself or a friend out in minutes.
Having taken a winch off and on a winch bumper it would be a ton easier to break into the vehicle.
Should keep a mini ratchet with 1/2" socket or at least a ratcheting wrench for it
Did you film at the zoo? Haha. That's a good looking Jeep. Another great video, Tyler! Keep 'em coming!
May I use crocodile electric connectors ? For 17000 lbs winch
No
