First thought when I saw this video: "how can an 30min video about winching be interesting?" 30mins later: "I learned more the past 30mins than in a whole year of school..."
I'm new to this and just learning. Now that I am retired I am taking my 2005 Wrangler i have had for 14 years and am exploring the Cascade Mountains here in Oregon a lot more often and deeper into the woods. Your video on how to winch is by far the best one I found so I subscribed. I installed a new bumper and winch on my Wrangler but have not tried it yet. (I didn't know about the synthetic vs steel then so I guess i may have to switch out the steel one to a synthetic one.) I have always wondered something about these; what happens if you go front first into something and you have to winch your vechicle backwards. Thanks for this great service you offer here.
This all depends on trees tho! In NH where I learned to drive it's no problem (just tall weeds there).... But out west here in WY there is often nothing over 4" DBH within cable range, an improvised land anchor might be a good adjunct vid!
AS a Master mechanic and professional recovery specialist on light and heavy vehicles your winching techniques are spot on very good sir and well done for teaching the right way to winch there are a few people on winching who teach bad ways to winch without using D links which is dangerous and stupid and voids personal insurance but i commend you on your teaching clear and precise instructions as winching in the US is the same as in any other country iam in the UK and we teach the exact same way well done .

TRACK UP! Very nicely done video.....Only thing I noticed missing was the placement of a coat or towel or something similar over your pull lines in case they snapped. As you correctly stated, the non-metal winch lines do not store much energy however if were talking total safety, why not throw your coat (or better yet, someone elses) over the pull line about 1/4 of the way back from the D ring......
Re: steel cable vs dyneema rope - some winch drums get hot when braking, dyneema rope can't take much heat. Steel cable is much less susceptible to abrasion.
Excellent video for the novice. I am using my 9000 Badland to uproot small trees to make our wooded area accessible and to have a clean look. Found the 2500 Badland was too small, so go big or don't go. LOL
I know its a different thing but i work with trucks that have tail lifts on the back and there is sometimes a controller so it can be raised either by the guy inside or the guy down on the road and if my hands or feet can get trapped i unplug the controller for the other guy... these things are so powerful and you cant take a chance when such a serious injury can happen in a second.

Making your winch a plate so that you can put it in a multi hitch gives you the option of putting it on the front or rear and taking it off the vehicle when you don't need it.
That's a good concern to have! At low speed creeping through the woods, the cooling fan comes on and off as needed anyway, but on the open road where the wind usually does the job for you is where you'll see a difference. The cooling fan will run if the temp gets high enough, and you might hear it come on more than normal and it's expected life is therefore somewhat shorter. Up here in NH it's not a big problem, but if you're operating in hot climates you might consider a bigger radiator, secondary electric fan, better ventilation around the radiator, a tube bumper instead of a plate one like this, a decent coolant temp gauge inside so you can keep an eye on it... We've got it easy up here but definitely if you're in the southern states it's something to think about.
You put a theoretical 20klb pull on a tree strap that should only be safely rated at 10 or 11k in a basket arrangement. Going to a 4inch wide or a 4 ply strap would more than likely bring you back into a safe arrangement, depending on strap ratings

having the winch hooked to the shackle then the strap is redundant isn't it? why not hook the winch directly to the strap and have fewer things in the system that can fail.
With a synthetic cable, it's not really necessary. There's nothing wrong with using one, more safety is always better, but it's kinda "optional" with a synthetic line.
The only deal with a roller fairlead is that the rollers should overlap in the corners where the cable could get trapped, and the rollers are smooth and undamaged, good to go. The smooth hawse fairleads are nice and low profile, but the cable gets dragged across that metal with a huge amount of force. Add some gritty sand or mud into that equation and you're degrading your synthetic cable much faster that rolling on a roller. Also keep in mind Dyneema has a critical temperature of only 150 degrees F, so less friction is always better. It's personal preference really. If you swap out your cable as often as you *should* you'll probably be fine either way. We get more years and use out of a winch line than we *should* by running the rollers. But anyone that tells you you have to run a hawse with synthetic line is either selling you something, or trying to justify something they bought.

Synthetic cable, if it snaps it just falls down. With a steel cable you would definitely want to consider blankets or some other protection.
