Characterizes the far western States as a region of contrasts in climate, topography, people and population densities. Emphasizes the importance of mining and lumbering, growth of industry and commerce, the area's interdependence with other regions, and its strategic position as gateway to the Pacific and Far East. Explains how irrigation and contrasting climates have influenced varied and large scale agricultural productions.
