$40 Fishfinder vs $2000 Fishfinder

  • I love using electronics and I feel they do give me an edge while fishing. However, not everyone can afford a fishfinder as they can be expensive. I took one of the cheapest fishfinders available on Amazon and compared and verified its performance using my Garmin Panoptix. The results were not what I expected.

The cheap fish finders do see the fish but just a few seconds after the expensive one detects it. For kayak fishing, the $40 fish finder is all I need. Thanks for sharing.

This is great. The barrier to entry into technological sporting is high for some people with limited funds. This gives those who are budget-minded some hope!

Thanks. I just got a $40 one (first sonar) and this gives me an idea of how it works. I’d never expect anything close to the more expensive ones. The instructions do say not to test it next to another device for the same reason you stated...interference. Great video.

Your video is the best one I’ve seen to realistically see how well these cheap fish finders work. You also told and showed me what I wanted to hear, which is a big + ! Other videos of ppl using these things are a mess ! 😆 Thanks !

Smart way of assessing the performance comparing against another fish finder. Most of the videos I have seen are just winging it and giving an opinion. Thanks for sharing this.

I have a Garmin Striker 4 for my sit-in kayak and love it. It doesn’t have the biggest screen but for $100 it’s works amazing.

I used one of those 40 dollar amazon fish finders for the last 2 ice seasons and did ok with it. It's a little late in the season but i just bought the garmin striker 5 ice bundle. Can't wait to get on the ice and see how much it ups my game. Good video

Interesting....looks like they both get you to the same destination.....I'm thinking it's kind of like Gilligan vs Thurston Howell 3rd in a fishing duel....Gilligans making a fish finder with a piece of Bamboo and a coconut encouraged by Mrs. Howell....while Mr. Howell has the Professor build one like Tesla...Smoking a Cigar and watching Ginger & MaryAnn sipping drinks in Bikini's......
But that's just my take on it.

Would love to know how accurate it is when it’s cold out below zero ? That’s in Canada Celsius degrees ? Say -10 to -15 when it’s frigid outside ? Those AAA Batteries may not work that well I’m thinking for so long and also how does it rub with the depth and fish spotting? It looks like a pretty warm day in the video, does anyone know or have tried this unit in the more frigid temperatures? I’m HOPING it still works the same? Thinking of buying one for my GrandSon as we fish together but he would be really happy to have this unit in his own hole ? Thanks for the feedback gang ! Mike

Got a question: for Walleye fishing do you actually NEED a fish finder/sonar to fish for them or are there ways to attract them like how noisy top-water baits are the song of the sirens for Pike?
Also, how far around a range does this measure? Only right below? A circle of a few feet around the sensor?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You don't NEED a sonar for walleye but it helps identify where they are holding. They don't hit topwater.
All transducer sonars have a cone that widens as depth increases. The deeper the water the wider the cone.

Just having the depth information and marking the depth of fish will be a big help. Def look into getting some sort of speed app for your phone so u can dial in the troll speed

Each block represents a depth there are 10 blocks. So if your in 10 ft of water each block is 1 foot. If your in 50 ft water then each block represents 5 ft. 20 ft water 2 ft each block etc etc . Hope this helped ? Mike

Great video. Even though the $40 one did see some of the fish, it’s a hit and miss situation.
The Garmin is obviously what you would rather spend your time looking at. The other one would be a constant guessing game. I’m spoiled. I’ll stay with the better electronics. If all I had was the $40 one, I would find it a tease. I’d rather fish blind. Thanks for the video.
