I have seen a couple of oil pastel paintings of Matt, the VI, and he (almost) never blends the paint with fingers, never uses turpentine or mineral spirits nor templates, just raw simple paintstrokes directly with the sticks in multiple layers. His style is so genuine, that I simply refer his method(ology) as "VI oil pastel painting technique"

How do you protect these oil pastel paintings? I have drawn one a few years ago and they got molded due to moisture.
I think you need some kind of spray sealant.
A spray-on lacquer helps but these oil pastels will never dry, supposedly, so you should probably mat and frame behind glass too.
