Great video as usual si gung! I wrote a comment on someone's video who was saying that wing chun did not work recently. I said that the problem with wing tsun is people go to learn self defence, but in actual fact it is an attacking art, and that if your mindset is to defend, you've lost already. It upset a lot of keyboard warrior's who sent me messages telling me I was wrong. Great to see someone as knowledgeable as yourself saying the same thing. I have been studying the Leung Ting system for 25 years and it's great to finally see someone showing how effective it is.

My friend... The Main reason why your students do not want to Fight... is because they have no Experience in fighting. This is why pretty much every Art, has a combination of Impact Conditioning, and Sparring. The reason why Wing Chun lacks both of these... Is because the art was taught to Rebellion fighters, whom already had conditioning and fighting experience, in the arts they trained before learning Wing Chun. Since the rebellion fighters were outnumbered... they never got to meet back up, and finish "Completing" the artform.
You can easily tell what WC is missing, from doing research into pretty much every other Chinese Artform.
As such... If you want your students to ACTUALLY become interested in Realistic levels of Self Defense... you have to start out with a good "CORE" workout routine (before any drills / instructions are allowed to take place)... and then add in Impact Conditioning / Iron Body conditioning drills, and finally.. some mild level sparring, with Gloves and Headgear.
For the sparring aspect... You should first just teach them Western Boxing strikes + methods... as well as basic Kicks (kickboxing). The reasons are simple. For any fighter to REALLY understand how to deal with experienced fighters... they have to best know the techniques that those fighters utilize... and have experience with dealing with them. The better you can actually DO these techniques... the more In Depth of an understanding that you will have, when you have to Defend against them. You are also going to start building up a "Subconscious" level of combat awareness. Basically, your brain will start to recognize the OPs positions, movements, and thus be partially able to pre "READ" the OPs intended movements / techniques.
The Partner and Solo impact conditioning, will help develop the students bodies gradually... so that they become denser and stronger... and suffer FAR less pain from any future heavy Impacts. The less pain a student feels when they are Hit... the Less they will be FEARFUL of getting hit. And the better they are equipped to deal with things, once they DO get hit. Obviously, conditioning needs to be trained Regularly, for extended periods of time... before serious results start to form. You cant just do a single Conditioning session, twice a month.
The westernized sparring, will actually be Fun for the students.. and it will help Motivate them into working harder, with far more Passion. They will also be gradually getting more and more used to hitting others, and taking hits.. in the process of their developments.
You will eventually start to increase the Wing Chun training... and start to Phase out a lot of the Western Sportized training methods. Its at that point, where they will really Appreciate and better Understand the Differences. They will be far more confident and serious at that point, due to their earlier training + conditioning + sparring. As such, the Wing Chun that they will end up developing from that point... will be FAR more effective, and far more "Combat Realistic". They will no longer be Clueless, Sacred, "Casual" practitioners. They will already be on a good path to getting in good physical shape (great core strength)... will have earned decent cardio.. and have confidence from the other experiences + conditioning routines.
Now, this "might" weed out some of the people whom are merely there for "Intellectual" and "Social" purposes. But is that really a bad thing? Remember, that many whom are casuals today... still have the potential to become Inspired... into working more more Seriously, and Intensely, towards a path of Mastery.
But if you CODDLE the students... and make the training seem more like some frivolous demos / seminars... Then they are never really going to take the school, the art, and the Training... Seriously. And worse yet... is that if they DID get into a real situation... NONE of what they had learned in class... is going to Come Out, when they need it most. This is because, they never trained Intensely enough, to really drive it deep into their subconscious minds... AND.. . because they have ZERO experience against High Stress, Full Speed, and FULL POWER viciousness, of a REAL barefist encounter. They will be partially Frozen in fear, and all of the Techniques will go out of the window. They will look like a bad / sloppy beginner kickboxer... and their every attempted defense, will crumble, as they likely end up tripping over their own feet in the process.
Also... If you have Never developed excellent Core strength (very strong ABS at minimal. But also should have strong Triceps, Grip strength, and Leg strength)... then you are not likely going to even be capable of taking a heavy blow to your Abs / Midsection, to begin with. While you train in such a way... as to try to PREVENT from ever being hit... there is always the possibility of it happening... especially if there are Multiple Attackers, and or if you are partially caught by Surprise. Or simply, if you just made a mistake. You cant afford to curl up into the Fetal position on the Ground, when you EAT a heavy hit. And as such... you NEED good conditioning, as a part of your Martial Arts training. Not only that.. but strong abs, are KEY to being able to ISSUE far more POWER. Weak abs... and your power from your lower trunk, is mostly being LOST. Also, power on actual IMPACT... is also going to be much weaker, overall... with a weak set of abs. And Obviously, stronger Triceps.. basically equates to making your WC punches stronger (greater power potentials).
I actually have 30 yrs of training, spanning many arts... with my Main focus on Wing Chun. Ive had 3 different WC teachers, and those Sifus have came from various different Lineages, themselves. One of those teachers, I believe he had 3 lineages worth of knowledge, himself. In addition, I cross trained in kicks from TKD, Muay Thai, Shaolin Longfist, and even some C.Wushu. I did regular.. 1hr long, Shaolin Style, Iron Body conditioning routines. Leaned a little bit of Tai Chi + some TC drills. Mastered the Chucks and the 9 Section steel Whip Chain... As well as learned the basics of the Rope Dark.
I had a very similar problem... when I was trying to teach a few Private students, myself. They didnt want to even put in 50% of what they were capable of. I couldnt motivate them to train Outside of Classes. They didnt like taking hits. They had a little mental trouble, with hitting each other. And they would give up way too easily... rather than push themselves to the limits. Eventually, I gave up teaching... because it was not worth my time and energy... and because I was not able to get a potential Successor. Not even Close to it.
One thing I realized, was that you cant easily Teach "Motivation", passion, and inspiration. Nor can you Force people to train harder. Its like walking a horse to water... You cant make the horse Drink the water. I can only tell people how I trained... and how hard I worked... as well as proved it, while I was training at their sides. But they have to decide for themselves, if they want to invest like I did.
I also realized, many of my own teaching flaws... and not doing enough Conditioning Routines, and Early Sparring... was likely the biggest part of the Problem. Had they been forced into being a bit tougher... and experienced the realism and thrill of good sparring sessions... they Might have developed a greater Passion for their Training.

I did see a Wing Chun guy in a legitimate fight competition who did the standard stylised hands-outstretched pose at the beginning of his fight just for show. But, when he had to get serious and actually fight he dropped it straight away.

I believe that that stance is a weapon stance. You are not supposed to use it empty handed unless you are in a very specific situation that calls for it.
For empty hand combat, that stance is more of a concept "Man Sao, Wu Sao and so on" not something that should be taken literally. Muay Thai and Boxing practitioners already employ the Man Sao and Wu Sao concepts, so they are legit, i guess

Yut gee cheung choy. Our center punch. The fist from the heart. Elbow in tight, use body weight, shift, closest target longest weapon. Set them up, one punch is good practice, over time, learn to free your hands by using them. A palm hit sets up one hell of a combo with the cheung kuen. 💯💥

@@Spiritof_76 yes, fantastical. There’s no evidence whatsoever of wing chun working in a real fight but plenty of evidence of ineffective attempts. With the amount of real fight footage there is in a hyper connected world, you imagine there’d be at least some evidence from across the globe. Heck, there’s even a channel by a Chinese guy who imports footage from China itself, but alas. Then, compare that to footage of mma used in real fights and contrast how effective it is. But I don’t think there’s actually any evidence or counter evidence that would change your mind about this
