I have a French text with the English translation side by side. I try to read a paragraph in French first without any assistance. If I don't recognize a word, I glance at the translation. If I'm still uncertain, then I look up the word in a dictionary. It's getting easier. I foresee reading Proust in the original sometime this summer. 😀

I guess the point of my question is: the gender of the participé is the gender of the direct object, or the gender of the subject of the phrase? For example, you talked about “elle s’est coupé le doigt”, so would it be “Elle se l’est coupé” or “coupée”? Thanks! I hope I wasn’t more confusing than the passé composé!

A lot of French speakers have bad spelling. It's not uncommon to have a good spoken French but terrible spelling 😉 so yes, don't worry too much 😀

Les dents are feminines, so es at the end. For le doigt, elle se l'est coupé :)
