  • Oh how they flew, back in '72! Here's a TV spot touting TWA service to LAX and PHX out of ORD and/or STL, with the then-new L1011. That ship appears to be N11002, TWA's second L1011, but the nose number is difficult to make out. In the early 1970s, TWA marketed a 'Great Cities' theme with what they called 'Ambassador Service'. Various individual aircraft in the TWA fleet had interiors that represented various cities on their route system. I have no idea what city is represented here, but pink, amber and yellow are heavily represented.

I worked for TWA in the late 70s. My husband, myself and some friends went to Phoenix on this beauty in first class and that table came up from the floor, two seats swiveled around and we had fine meal and played cards all the way to Arizona. I will never forget that trip! or working for that wonderful carrier.

I was a f/a for TWA from '96-'97 (sadly, I knew they wouldn't last and I went to Delta). This was such a cool plane to work. Of course, those seats were LNG gone, but my god, TWA still had AMAZING food, in coach and first, domestic and international. This plane had a lower galley where you "cooked" the entrees for coach. You actually rode an elevator down to it, and sent the food back up. I was so shocked when I went to Delta and they food they had after being spoiled at TWA.

I flew to Australia in 1986 and returned to Europe via the Pacific and the U.S. - After flying Qantas it was quite a change with TWA: the planes were old and the food never never matched Qantas. TWA had a problem with my backpack, Qantas transported it countless times without any fuss. My last flight JFK-LHR was overbooked. I ended up in one of the oldest 747-100. Chances are it was the one that eventually crashed near New York. TWA might have been a good airline in the U.S., but could not compete with top airlines.

I don't remember my 10-11 flight, too young, but I do remember the 90s "coach" class on 74s and a DC-10.
Coming back from Chicago last week, cramming my small backpack carry on into the overhead bin, and squeezing into my sardine can set, I realized that I was so lucky to have experienced the golden age of airline travel, and remember when flying was awe inspiring and how I was so proud that my dad was a c-130 pilot.
Everyone used to walk their family to the gates, and wave at the wide body monstrosities that looked so amazingly huge with sound that fit such s feat of engineering.
Now it's all about fuel efficiency, how much leg room they can squeeze out if you, deducting a few inches a year and forget about pillows, blankets and meals which all used to be standard.
They wonder why kids aren't interested in aviation these days. Really too bad, even more disturbing is this trend of no frills, bottom line prices with employees that couldn't care less as their employers couldn't care less about them.
Sure we've got smartphones and self driving cars, but the spirit and soul of what this country used to be about has been sold to the lowest bidder.
This isn't the future we were promised, and I want a refund!
I'm really not trying to be a pessimist here, but just a few decades ago not only did we have world class travel like this, but no "war on terror", fears of economic collapse and you were able to run around outside all day as a kid, playing with your neighbors and had to be FORCED to come inside for dinner- even though we all had Nintendo 64s, and computers with 56k modems.
Fear, distrust, greed and division has torn us apart. Hopefully a bright future awaits, and AI comes online to be an asset to humanity and help us get back in touch with our roots, because we are in a downward spiral that shows no sign of slowing, and picking up pace.
Music and TV glorifies amoral psychopaths, and rewards who can rhyme about murder and drugs the best.
Dark days we're in. Our wives are fear stricken, the working class is so broken and upset that nobody cares or has passion for what they do anymore. I drove by the house I grew up in last year, and it was the perfect analogy for what has happened to us.
What used to be a GORGEOUS corner lot, huge two story 70s warm home had deteriorated into a faded and crumbling shell of what it was. It's like when something, even a physical object like a car or home, is neglected and abused enough the soul is just bashed out of it.
    The spark is gone.
Well that's my rant for the day after being hit with a double dose of nostalgia.
It's just a damn shame. Our founding fathers, and entrepreneurs of our past are rolling in their graves right now at what has happened to this great nation, both economically and spiritually for lack of a better term.

The Lockheed L-1011 Tri-Star WhisperLiner was the most advanced jetliner of its day - for many years and for many reasons...
Just google L-1011 and you'll find out about its Direct Lift Control, the safer mounting of its center engine, its elevators to the below-deck galleys that freed up more space for seating, its electric up-into-the-attic doors, its wing-controls, its auto-throttles and THE FIRST CATIIIC Autoland function! The to-this-day unique BONDED fuselage that eliminated not only the weight of 200,000 rivets, but also the possible CRACKS from 200,000 rivets (hello, Boeing?)
It was also quieter & more fuel-efficient - it was mainly the financial problems at Rolls-Royce that held up their engines and therefore let the (hideously inferior) DC-10 pick up all the orders to make a profit... along with American Airlines venally using the competition to get Douglas to lower the price of the DC-10. It is to weep...

Even back in the 80s and up to mid-90s things were better than they are now. No PTVs in economy, but the seats were comfortable and well cushioned, there was more legroom (34-36 inches was standard in economy for long-haul), the food was good, and the FAs were friendly and good at their jobs. You could also guarantee on most flights (at least the ones i took) the aircraft would have plenty of empty rows so you could move, lift up the armrests, and spread out.
I dread long-haul flying now. There is nothing pleasant about it. Even with a premium economy upgrade it's not much better. You have to get to business or first if you want a good flight.
I wasn't alive when TWA took delivery of their L1011s, but this video still sparks memories of when flying was a pleasure.

    TWA's 747
In 1970 by being the first to fly it across
    the country
we opened up a whole new era in big, wide cross-country
    travel
it was the most comfortable, most advanced plane
    in the air
Now, only a few years later
we have a plane that's even more comfortable, even
    more advanced.
    TWA's 1011
It's the culmination of every improvement and every comfort
    we've ever thought of
we've made part of First Class a dining room
    with big, comfortable swivel seats
you can even make reservations, as you would in
    a restaurant
    In the big, spacious Coach
we put in unique, two-by-two seating,
so you'll never be more than one seat from the aisle
But, what's most important isn't that it's big
    and comfortable
it's that it's the most advanced plane ever built
In fact, it uses some of the same technology that
    landed men on the moon
If you liked our 747, you'll love our 1011
it's what an airplane should be
and that's what makes TWA what travel should be...

The First Class section with those tables for 4 is all very well but I think that if it were brought back these days there would be quite a bot of objection to having to share a table with 3 complete strangers where a flight was full.

This is what deregulation did. It opened up so much competition, that the big airlines had to cut back on all frills in order to survive. And even then, most of them went under in the race to the bottom. Today, ironically, we still have deregulation, but almost no competition. America had many more airlines in 1972 than it does today. Not only did deregulation kill the golden age of flying, but it actually also killed almost all of the competition.

I've never had the pleasure of flying in a 747 yet but I've flown in an L1011 nearly 40 years ago and at the time I was very nervous and slightly air sick but in retrospect it was a fantastic aircraft, one I would enjoy today since I've learned the secret to less nervous and more enjoyable flying.(ask me how)A320 is currently my favorite. The perfect sweet spot between big and small aircraft.

      @@charlesjwin glad you asked...
Simply using the lavatory as soon as allowable doing both #1 and #2 especially(although the last time I flew I went just before at the Airport,) I found out relaxed me instantly even before I returned to my seat, even while inside the small space of the lavatory with the sound of the engines buzzing away(I'm obviously not Claustrophobic but have a fear of heights and flying) and I'm able to relax to the point of sleeping during the flight. I hope this has been helpful...

    • @almostfm
      @almostfm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's largely due to the fare deregulation that happened starting in the late 70s. Back then, there wasn't much competition based on price, so airlines used service to get and keep your loyalty. Now, everybody wants to fly coast to coast for $100, and the way that airlines can stay profitable is taking away service and putting more butts in seats and cutting down on the services.

Planes used to have lounges in the 60s and in the early 70s, especially on the spacious 747s. But soon after, especially with the rising cost of fuel, lounges were seen as a waste of money-making space.
We do not see fancy dining tables like this today, but first class, or even business class passengers on some airlines can have a similar social dining experience at their seat. And with planes being more efficient with a market demand for a better flying experience, it seems like lounges are making a comeback, especially on the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787.

Every airline executive and aviation policy maker should be forced to watch this on a loop for days.
