  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.ค. 2019
  • Rare footage from an Eastern Airlines Flight Engineer, recorded on a VHS tape in 1986. Shows an Eastern Airlines L-1011 TriStar, registration N317EA, on the ground in New York City. The full tour includes exterior shots, a cabin walkthrough, the galley on the lower deck, and cockpit shots.
    Exterior tour begins: 0:11
    Cabin tour begins: 3:16
    Galley tour begins: 7:11
    More of cabin: 8:53
    Cockpit tour begins: 9:28
The plane, N317EA, was delivered to Eastern Airlines in 1973. After the unfortunate closure of Eastern, it was delivered to Air Algerie for a few months, and then American Trans Air. In 1991, the plane was delivered to Delta Airlines under the registration N784DA, and was broken up in 2003 at Marana Boneyard. More information, as well as photos, are available online.
The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, is an American medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner by Lockheed Corporation. It was the third wide-body airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The airliner has a seating capacity of up to 400 passengers and a range of over 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 km). Its trijet configuration has three Rolls-Royce RB211 engines with one engine under each wing, along with a third center-mounted engine. The aircraft has an autoland capability, an automated descent control system, and available lower deck galley and lounge facilities. The aircraft also has a dedicated smoking section, 7 lavatories, giant movie screens, large ceilings, and multiple elevators that take crew to the lower deck galleys.

I was an Eastern f/a married to an Eastern pilot. This was by far our favorite airplane and our preferred equipment to work. I had many fun experiences on the L1011. I remember all with fond memories. I have flown for AA for years but have never experienced the camaraderie I did at EAL. You captured a precious moment in time. This video brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for preserving many fond memories!

My parents took me and my brother to Disney World several times starting in May 1977 and we always went on an EA L-1011 out of Buffalo, NY. That's when the plane ride was as fun as the trip itself. While I am typing this, 3 feet from me is a blue EA carry on bag that my father used on all of those trips. I keep it out all the time to commemorate all the fun we had back then.

In 1972, the first summer Walt Disney World's only park The Magic Kingdom was open My father took us on our very first flight from Phila to Orlando aboard a Eastern Airlines L 1011. The cabin seats were blue, purple'ish and very comfortable. Lots of leg room and cabin was very wide, 2, 5 across and 2. Most if not all your luggage was checked so very little need for over head use. Our morning flight was not full so we went up and sat in first class. YES there was a smoking section but it was not big deal most everyone smoked. You could get up and walk around the cabin during the entire flight. Full meals were served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also, Everyone dressed up to fly. You wouldn't be caught wearing hobo clothing, gym clothes or pj pants back then. Interior cabins played soft music during boarding the aircraft. Much like you played in this video. Thank you for this wonderful video. Brought back great memories for me. RIP Dad and Mom.

It was far more advanced when it was introduced than any airliner of its day. There was never a L1011 that crashed because of design issue. All of the crashes, which there were not many over its 40+ year career were results of human error or weather. You may want to educate yourself a bit on the topic.

This is very precious footage! The cabin looks soooo much bigger and more spacious without the overhead storage bins in the center. I suppose part of the reason for that is that in those days there was only one large pull-down movie screen for each section of the cabin and I suppose inner cabin storage bins would have blocked the view and indeed the film projection. But I am surprised about how worn and dirty things appear to be especially in the galley. I do love all of the analog equipment in the cock-pit. And for people who may not remember... smoking and congregating was allowed on these flights. And although I was never a smoker I would usually go to the back of the cabin and hang out with the smokers as they were typically congregating and talking it up. A ten hour flight goes so much quicker in friendly group conversation!

The L-1011 was easily the best built wide body jetliner back-in-the-day. Air Canada always had the tendency to buy and fly the best, including the Tristar instead of the DC-10. Flew on its L-10’s on a number of occasions.
As a side note, Air Canada L-1011 interiors were more visually appealing compared to EAL’s (not stipulated for boasting purposes).

@@harveysmith100 Hi, de Havilland DH121 Trident. Problem with CAT-III capable autoland systems in the 60s and 70s was that it rarely costed in when the cost of the ground equipment had to be considered. So British Airways (the old BEA bit) replaced the Trident with the less-capable Boeing 757 and lost full CAT-III because Boeing wanted too much money for that capability. Not enough demand in the North American market as different weather (fog) conditions to those experienced in Western Europe.

Thank you SO much for posting this! It was 1986 or 87 when I first set foot on an L1011 -- I would have been 7 or 8. It was this configuration (meaning 5 center seats and no overhead bins above the center seats) which made this plane look MASSIVE -- even after just getting off of a DC-10. As a child who knew nothing, this became my favorite aircraft and I always wanted to fly on one again. I only flew on the L1011 twice but I loved it. A big, warm, spacious, thoughtful, comfortable aircraft. I do miss them so it was nice to see a video of one still humming away in service (even it it was 34 years ago).

What an awesome video! Brings back so many wonderful memories of flying with Eastern. I was a CTC travel agent at the time and had been trained on the Eastern Airlines SODA reservation system. We were able to print boarding passes right in our office, remember stapling them to the back of each respective flight coupon. Flew the L-1011 many times, especially to training in Miami. Oh what wonderful days those were. The L-1011 was so spacious and you really felt special being a passenger aboard one. The interior was so roomy. I will never forget the droning sound of those RR engines. So unique to the L-1011. Eastern was a top notch airline in its time. My first flight was aboard an Eastern Airlines DC-9-14 from STL to my hometown of EVV in August of 1968. We were so fortunate to have Eastern serve our city for so many years. It was so sad when they went out of business. I can't count how many Walt Disney World tour packages I sold for them. Really enjoyed the non-revenue passes, back in the day when it was relatively easy to fly standby with so many flights offered each day. I am so thankful to have experienced these glory days. Thank you for sharing this gem of a video. It is just like reliving a dream. Thanks again. P.S. Loved Canadian Sunset being played over the intercom system. I could not handle seeing our planes in the graveyard. I tear up just looking at pictures. F/A 1970 until demise.

@@tomasjoconnel5367 Supposedly some parts from flt 401 were used as needed on other 1011s.

I remember flying this type to San Juan, PR. Most comfortable aircraft for passengers. Remember the crew taking coats and checking them. Why did they decide to forgo the center overhead compartments? It certainly gave the plane a very spacious feel. Fewer people had carry ons back then, I guess?

Loved the tour, spent many days driving rivets in the wing box and mid and aft cargo holds. Switched to Inspection on the cockpit/forward fuselage mate then final assembly. Left in 82 to work at ADP.

I used to fly on ATA's L1011's in the late 90's, early 2000's on the way to my deployments. Always a good ride.

My first flight was on a Worldways L-1011 from Prestwick to Toronto back in 1989. There was no in flight entertainment, but there were hot towels, sweets, nuts a cream tea, 2 meals and endless soft drinks. The bar downstairs was pretty cool!

I have heard about that. There were several airlines that operated lounges on the lower level. Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) had a lower lounge on their L-1011s. It was before I was born, but my dad lived in CA and flew on a PSA L-1011 several times in the 70s. Wish there was a video of the lower lounge. lol....Not all L-10 operators, like Delta and Eastern Airlines, had lower lounges.

@@caseyl3789 from what I've read the 2 PSA tristars with lounges were bought by Worldways, so it was one of those I flew in. Either 1064 C-GIES or 1079 C-GIFE

We are lucky to have this historical footage! 11:16 if one of those bulbs had not failed in 1972 we would not have lost 101 souls and a beautiful aircraft. RIP.
