We missed that you have to buy the Welcome Suica at the airports! There is another option if you are like us and don't have the right credit cards to add a balance to your phone's mobile Suica and are already away from the airports, Pasma Passport. You can get these at most of the NEX stations. They are supposed to cost 2000 yen for 1500 yen balance, but didn't charge us the set up 500 yen fee. You can add balance to it like a normal Suica/Pasmo card. We have used it on most of the lines and some stores already. Like Welcome Suica it is only good for 28 days with no refunds on any remaining balance.
The JR Pass cannot be used on the subway, so if you plan to take the subway frequently, having a Suica card might be convenient. But, you can also purchase tickets for each train ride :)

The only difference is whether there is a guarantee when you lose the card. In the case of Named Suica, there is a refund guarantee if you lose your Suica card. Blank Suica does not come with such a guarantee. With Named Suica, you need to input your birthday and name when purchasing, so it might be a bit more troublesome compared to Blank Suica😅

You obviously have no idea about the ticketing. JR is for LONG DISTANCE EG BULLET TRAIN, SUICA is for LOCAL METRO/BUS Services. Depending on your plans you may NEED both, it's NOT OVERKILL

Thank you for the great tips and food tips on your other videos. On iPhone you can’t use Visa. I had to use Master card. We are from Hawaii and didn’t work. So maybe US too. Other countries might work.
Same here. I tried three Visa cards from different banks via Apple Pay and they wouldn’t work. It wasn’t any kind of fraud protection issue either. Fortunately I had one Mastercard credit card and debit card that worked fine.
Why did they cancel no name cards? We have Pasmo but wanted to buy Suica on our next trip. I hope we can at least use our existing Pasmo. It makes it more difficult for tourist. 😢

From December 18th 2023, Welcome Suica will only be sold at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station on Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Line. Please note that IC cards will not be sold at Narita Airport.
If you have say a ¥5000 balance on your card and you're leaving the country, can you get a refund of this balance but keep the card for your next visit?
I added the mobile version and added to my Iphone...easy to use and top up....i did have problems when trying to top up with VISA cc...had to use Mastercard

Thank you for the great tips and food tips on your other videos. On iPhone you can’t use Visa. I had to use Master card. We are from Hawaii and didn’t work. So maybe US too. Other countries might work.

Same here. I tried three Visa cards from different banks via Apple Pay and they wouldn’t work. It wasn’t any kind of fraud protection issue either. Fortunately I had one Mastercard credit card and debit card that worked fine.
Why did they cancel no name cards? We have Pasmo but wanted to buy Suica on our next trip. I hope we can at least use our existing Pasmo. It makes it more difficult for tourist. 😢
The issuance of new blank Suica and blank PASMO cards has been temporarily suspended due to the worldwide semiconductor shortage.
If you have PASMO, there is no need to buy Suica. However, If you have not used your PASMO for a certain period of time, it may be locked and you may not be able to pass through the ticket gate. In this case, you can ask a station attendant at the ticket gate to unlock it. If it is difficult to communicate in Japanese, you can use the Google Translate app to tell the station attendant that you cannot pass through the ticket gate :)
(According to online info, it seems that the lock will be released if you recharge the card, but I haven't tried it myself, so I'm not sure. Sorry)

When registering my Suica card to obtain the named Suica card, I am required to provide my name, date of birth, gender, and phone number. However, I don't have a phone number, and I'm concerned if it will be a problem. Could you please clarify if not having a phone number will cause any issues?

Don't buy the welcome one it's not worth it. Get the named one as the suica card has limits now (7/14/23)

Yes, the blank Suica cards have been discontinued for a while starting June 8, 2023. But the named Suica cards and Welcome Suica can be bought :)

From December 18th 2023, Welcome Suica will only be sold at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station on Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Line.
Please note that IC cards will not be sold at Narita Airport.
If you have say a ¥5000 balance on your card and you're leaving the country, can you get a refund of this balance but keep the card for your next visit?
When you request a refund for the remaining balance on your Suica card, the card will be collected. (You will receive a 500 yen deposit refund.)

I added the mobile version and added to my Iphone...easy to use and top up....i did have problems when trying to top up with VISA cc...had to use Mastercard

Alternatively, you can check the balance by inserting it into the ticket machine.
