I ended up buying a few 72hr Tokyo Metro Passes when I was over last year. Much much cheaper than a Suica as the latter does not have a daily cap (unlike London etc). I did use the Suica for all conbini purchases tho..and some non-metro journeys so definitely worth getting!
Hi there, thank you for the clear and comprehensive video on the use of IC transport cards. The option to link our IC card to the bullet train tickets is such a good tip!
Awesome, I think I will add a Suica card to my iPhone wallet before going to Japan so I don’t have to waste time at the airport making a line for the physical card! Thank you for the information!
As an addendum to this video, not all train stations support IC cards. For example, in Hokkaido, only train stations in Sapporo, Chitose, and Otaru are equipped with IC card machines. For other cities such as Hakodate, Yoichi, and Niseko, you will need to buy regular tickets.
IC cards are for local travel in urban areas. Hakodate has a small IC valid area. For longer distance travel, including travel between 2 cities which accept IC cards, you need to buy paper tickets or passes.

And which IC Card is best one. I know Japan is the country has the best train system in the world BUT it also create lot of headache for the visitors because it has many different lines with different price - so confusing for tourist.🤦♂️😁
Thanks for an information dense but easy to understand video covering most of what foreign travellers need to navigate Japan’s sometimes confusing IC payments system. You touched on kids’ IC cards in the Shinkansen chapter near the end but left us wanting to know more. Namely, how does one buy a kids’ IC card? Does a guardian or parent need to attend a みどりの窓口 office with child in tow and some sort of identification for them? Are there kids’ IC cards available? What other sorts of restrictions or tips should families know? Enquiring minds need to know.
This was a very useful video. I have a question for you. Can you look at the 3 day unlimited ticket, 5 day Greater Tokyo Pass & the 5 day Tokyo Pass. I know that none of these can be used on the JR lines but would you help me as a foreigner or anyone interested. For example the Tokyo Pass on Klook allows you to see museums as well as transit on local buses and subways and the Greater Tokyo pass would allow me to see cool place outside of tokyo for a flat fee. This would be a great video
Thank you, Yoko-san! Even as someone who visited Japan multiple times, I always learn something new from your videos. In this video I thought of a follow up question a few times but you answered them all later in the video. Arigatou gozaimasu!
I am in Tokyo. I got a Hello Kitty IC card and bought a 72 hour metro pass. The unlimited metro 72 hours pass is wonderful to travel within the 2 transit company. If it is outside of these 2 companies, I would use my Hello Kitty IC card. After using the subway, I feel like it is easy. As long as Google map provides the correct information. So far Google is correct 98% withe the route. The subway is like a maze. I love to use the unlimited pass because if I enter the incorrect bus routes I could go back out with no issue, but IC card will charge each time in and out.

This is the most useful video about IC cards I've come across. Can you recharge the cards by using a debit card or is it possible to do it only in cash? Thank you
We will arrive in Osaka and go straight to Kyoto from the airport. My husband and I will use Suica on our cell phones. We have 2 children and I would like to know if I can buy the physical card in Kansai, and which card should I buy?
You can get the Icoca card for kids at a ticket counter. fyi, kids under 6 can travel free of charge. from 6-11yrs, tickets are half the price of adults'. are you flying out from Osaka too? cuz the Icoca card requires 500yen deposit, and you have to return it in Osaka/Kansai area to get back the deposit money. cannot return the Icoca card in Tokyo.
Thank you for this clear video - but on the refunds section, I don't believe you covered whether the iPhone Wallet Suica app is refundable? If we add 1000 Yen to the Suica wallet app and don't use it all, can we refund/transfer it back to our Apple Wallet debit card or Apple cash account?
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 you're right! that was not included. I will make sure to include it in the updated version of this video! Very useful info! Thanks a lot for letting me know! for now, to your question, you need to have a bank account in Japan in order to get the refund from the Suica card in your Apple Wallet. if that's impossible, the best way is to top up the card little by little and then use up all the money on the card, and remove it from Apple Wallet if you no longer need it.
Hello: this is a very helpful video. Thank you for the comprehensive overview. Does anyone know how you can see the full number for a digital IC card? I can only see the last four digits of the card via my apple wallet. I tried downloading the app to link the card via the app but it’s in Japanese and I cannot figure out how to change the language settings to link and see the full number.
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 if you're just visiting Japan for a short time, you can try the following steps: - Open the Suica card in Apple Wallet - Tap on the three dots icon (...) on the top right corner of the phone - Select "Card Details" - Select "Open" in Suica Finance App (you need to download the Suica Finance app) - In the Suica Finance app, you will see the Suica card that you added -- tap on the card and you will see the full card number. please let me know if this works...
@@ONEGOODDREAM Thank you for this tip! I followed your instructions and with the help of Google translate, I was able to eventually locate the Suica card number. Yoko san. Thank you so much for this video. Since I'm arriving in Osaka, I'll have to get an Icoca card. And since the physical cards are in short supply, it is better for me to download the Icoca app, right? However, the Icoca card is a long term card, so I won't be able to get a refund as my journey ends in Tokyo. So, in summary, don't get a physical Icoca card unless I don't want a refund for the 500Yen.
Hi! yes you're right! it's best if you could get an IC card on your smartphone (Icoca/Suica any card is fine, they work the same). and yes, don't get a physical Icoca card unless you don't want the refund since you won't be able to refund it in Tokyo.
Sem dúvida em seu canal encontrei respostas para todas as dúvidas sobre passagens para circular no Japão. Sou muito grata pelas explicações tão claras. Mas tenho um pedido: você poderia habilitar mais legendas, por favor? Obrigada.
Very useful video! May I ask how is best to ask a cashier to use up your Suica and pay the rest in cash? I want to make sure I am respectful :) Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind consideration!🙏 you can literally ask a cashier staff that you want to pay by Suica, please use up the Suica balance, and then if it's not enough, you will pay by cash. it's very normal. don't worry :)
Thanks so much for this video! If I get a digital IC card (Pasmo), can I just reload it directly from phone? I don't need to do it at a machine, correct?
when you tap the ic card at the exit gate, the gate will close and the light will turn red to let you know if you don't have enough balance. in that case you can go to a machine nearby to recharge your ic card and tap again to go out.
I have an Icoca on my iphone. In April on my last day I used the Nankai Rapid Express to KIX airport with the ticket also on the phone. Unfortunately when leaving the station I accidentially held the phone to the ic card reader before a friendly employee showed me the right one. Left Japan two hours later by plane. Now my virtual card in the phone shows »in Progress« , which I read as I‘m now on a train since 1.5 months. What will happen if I come back to Japan in July and how could this be solved? Couldn‘t find anything that looks like customer service in english.
When you come back, just stop by a ticket office and explain to the staff there. they will help you close that trip. after that you can use it as normal. no worries!
How i use for 3 tickets adult with the same IC ? How i know its express train? How do i know how much money left in the card? Digital - all type of phone? In which shopes can i buy with IC?
Thank you for the extra information. SUICA can be used as currency beyond transport which makes it good for making purchases without carrying money. With Department Stores taking SUICA, that means that amounts on the card can be large and with the refundable SUICA, that makes it easy. The non-refundable SUICA poses a problem: imagine having 5000 yen on it when you are at the airport to leave (and weight limits mean you cannot buy any more things). That is a lot of food and drinks to get the balance to zero before you give your money to JR East! With a ten-year card, the 5000 yen can sit until you travel again.. and you can still use it to buy things. It amazes me that 10-year SUICA are only sold in Tokyo, not the airports or neighbouring cities. It makes it difficult for those who want the card but are not planning to spend a lot of time in Tokyo. I suspect I will spend a day of my holiday hunting for a 10-year card as reports coming back from travellers suggest that 10-year cards are selling out fast.
The only thing I’m trying to understand now is if there is a 2 or 3 day unlimited train pass in Tokyo? Thanks for your video, it’s really clear. I didn’t know you could link an IC card to an express train… but also what is the benefit of doing that? Cheaper?
Can one sucia card be used for multiple people? 2 adults and one child? Does each person need a card? Do you have the option when paying at the station turnstile to select multiple entries?
Gosh! Thanks for the detailed info. Been searching about IC cards and yours is the most understandable. Very precise. Excited for my Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya-Gifu-Tokyo trip this year!
I have another question: is there any IC card available in Osaka, such as Welcome Suica or Pasmo Passport that don't need to be refund because they have no deposit? I know those I mentioned are not sold in Osaka, but do you know if there's any other? (Icoca needs a deposit and I'll lose it as I finish in Tokyo). Thank you
Hi, please refer to this video: th-cam.com/video/thWCRQiF8tQ/w-d-xo.html at 5:30, you can select "Card Import" to add your physical suica card to your phone.
Probably not relevant but some IC cards that are issued in rural parts don’t work nationwide and only with a certain transportation system. For example in Kagawa there is the IRUCA card which works with the kotoden and their busses but not outside of Kagawa, however cards like the SUICA does work on the Kotoden so there is no reason to get it. Any card issued in one of the larger regions works nationwide but some cards issued in smaller regions may not. Fun trivia is that you depending on the region get a regional variant of a different card such as a Shikoku version of the ICOCA card.
My child is 5 years old. Would we both pass through the barrier using my Welcome Suica - together - or would we need to go through a separate gate and speak to a member of staff for my son to pass the barrier? Are there family gates? Thank you!
hi, there's no family gates. all gates are the same. you and your child can go through a gate together by only tapping your welcome suica card at the gate.
Thank you for this informative video. Can you explain, how to install and use the digital Suica card on an iPhone? I find in the app store only the Japanese version. How to use it with the apple wallet?
Hey, can you help with the IC card? When I try to download it from Apple Store, the language is all Japanese and I don’t seem to be able to change the language. Do you have the link for it?
Hi, great video! just checking, do i have to tap both in AND out when i use the Suica card (like you do with credit cards in the UK when travelling on the metro) or just tap once when i go in to the station.
Does the Passmo passport card have to have a minimum amount of credit to be able to start making a trip? The other day, I wanted to use it and it told me the balance was low. You know exactly what the limit is so that it does not warn you that you have to put money
@@ONEGOODDREAM Hi, thanks for the answer. I had 400-500 yen, to be exact, i think it was 420 yen and the trip were less than 240. The problem with this card is that they not refund the money and the mínimum to add is 1000 yen, so i don't know if this is made on purpose to keep the money of the visitors even if You make the exact calculations of your tríps to optimize the credit in your card.
Thank you for aa very informative video. We bought our tickets for the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano using Ekinet and linked our tickets to our Suica cards. However, we did not know about Smart EX and bought our tickets for the Shinkansen for Kanazawa to Osaka directly on the JR West website. Is it possible to link these tickets to our Suica Card or is it only possible if we bought them through Smart EX? Thank you!
the suica card can only pay for the basic fare (or passenger ticket). if you take an express train, you need to purchase an express ticket separately. you can use the Suica card to pay for that express ticket at a vending machine or ticket counter.
@@ONEGOODDREAM Thanks for quick feedback...From Narita to Shimbashi..The first train is Keisei Narita Skyaccess and the second is Asakusa line..(same train that's what I read from Google map)...So I have to buy 1 ticket for Skyaccess?and pay as passenger for basic fare for asakusa line?
Wait, so the physical suica card will only become invalid if not used for 10 years? Or it has a life of 10 years in total? I was under the assumption it will expire after 10 years, whether it's used or not.
Thank you for such a thorough and informative video! I have a quick question about the child Suica card. I plan to get digital card for myself and hubby, but I read that a child card has to be bought in-person. Is that correct? Or can I possibly get a digital card for my kid and put it on his Apple Watch?
@@zeeaddicted4201 sorry, just to clarify, if there's a Welcome Suica card vending machine (for example they have one at Haneda airport), you can buy the child card at the vending machine too. if not, you can buy it at the JR Travel Service Centers. have a wonderful trip!^^

Thank you for watching!🙏 yes you can either reload it from phone or at machines/convenience stores.
If ypu don't have enough balance in your IC card when you tap it at the end of the journey, how do you pay the difference? Any video on that? Thanks
when you tap the ic card at the exit gate, the gate will close and the light will turn red to let you know if you don't have enough balance. in that case you can go to a machine nearby to recharge your ic card and tap again to go out.
When you come back, just stop by a ticket office and explain to the staff there. they will help you close that trip. after that you can use it as normal. no worries!
@@ONEGOODDREAM Thanks!
@@studiospiraluniverse you're very welcome!
Do you have the option when paying at the station turnstile to select multiple entries?
it has to be 1 card per person.
@@ONEGOODDREAM thank you so much!!

Can I get a refund on my digital suica on my iphone?
Gosh! Thanks for the detailed info. Been searching about IC cards and yours is the most understandable. Very precise. Excited for my Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya-Gifu-Tokyo trip this year!
Thank you so much!🙏 Hope you'll have a wonderful trip!^^
Suica card can use for Tokyo metro subway trains? Thanks....
Yes, absolutely
I have another question: is there any IC card available in Osaka, such as Welcome Suica or Pasmo Passport that don't need to be refund because they have no deposit? I know those I mentioned are not sold in Osaka, but do you know if there's any other? (Icoca needs a deposit and I'll lose it as I finish in Tokyo). Thank you
Hi, I'm not sure if Icoca has a card for tourists. maybe not.
Thanks for a valuable video. Wondering is there a English version of the digital IC? The iPhone app is in Japanese.
Hi there! How can I add my physical suica card to my phone using the suica app? Thank you!
Hi, please refer to this video: th-cam.com/video/thWCRQiF8tQ/w-d-xo.html
at 5:30, you can select "Card Import" to add your physical suica card to your phone.
You can also use your credit card if you have no forgien currenvy exhange fee
Yes. Good idea, you can get credit card points accumulated.
Hi! What card can we buy from Narita Airport? And will it be available anytime via machines?
Hi, you can get a Welcome Suica card at JR Travel Service Center at Narita Airport.
Can we purchase that in any JR lines? Or convenient stores?
Where to download the Digital ICOCA Card? I've looked on the Play Store and couldn't find it
My child is 5 years old.
@@ONEGOODDREAM thanks so much for your help!
@@avgeek8626 you're welcome!^^
Does it available on Android phone now?
Can I use Kansai One Pass in Tokyo?
No, you can only use it in the areas stated in the pass, in Kansai.
Thank you for this informative video. Can you explain, how to install and use the digital Suica card on an iPhone? I find in the app store only the Japanese version. How to use it with the apple wallet?
Thank you so much!🙏 I've made a video about that. please check it out here:

Hey, can you help with the IC card? When I try to download it from Apple Store, the language is all Japanese and I don’t seem to be able to change the language. Do you have the link for it?
hi, I covered that in this video here: th-cam.com/video/thWCRQiF8tQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi, great video! just checking, do i have to tap both in AND out when i use the Suica card (like you do with credit cards in the UK when travelling on the metro) or just tap once when i go in to the station.
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 you will need to tap the IC card both in and out.
I Will arrive next month at narita. What tò do if i could find an IC card?
Does the Passmo passport card have to have a minimum amount of credit to be able to start making a trip? The other day, I wanted to use it and it told me the balance was low. You know exactly what the limit is so that it does not warn you that you have to put money
there's not really a limit...the balance just needs to be enough to pay for a trip.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 yes you can also link those tickets to your Suica card on JR West website. it's similar to that of the JR East.
OMG, awesome info. Thanks
Thank you so much!🙏
I have a Nimoca card. Can I get an unused credit refund in Tokyo without returning the card? Tq
Can I use IC card on Tokyo bus
sure thing! it can be used all over Japan, anywhere you see the IC mark, you can use it.
Instead of buying ticket, can I use suica card riding train from Narita T1 to Shimbashi station?
the suica card can only pay for the basic fare (or passenger ticket). if you take an express train, you need to purchase an express ticket separately. you can use the Suica card to pay for that express ticket at a vending machine or ticket counter.
I was under the assumption it will expire after 10 years, whether it's used or not.
yeah, the physical suica card will only become invalid if not used for 10 years, counted from your last use of the card.
@ONEGOODDREAM good to know thank you👍
Thank you for such a thorough and informative video! I have a quick question about the child Suica card. I plan to get digital card for myself and hubby, but I read that a child card has to be bought in-person. Is that correct? Or can I possibly get a digital card for my kid and put it on his Apple Watch?
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 yes, unfortunately the child card has to be bought in-person at the JR Travel Service Centers.
@@ONEGOODDREAMthank you for your quick reply. Ok. I’ll take care of that at the airport. Excited!
@@zeeaddicted4201 sorry, just to clarify, if there's a Welcome Suica card vending machine (for example they have one at Haneda airport), you can buy the child card at the vending machine too. if not, you can buy it at the JR Travel Service Centers. have a wonderful trip!^^
