Is beautiful to say… but the problem and really with that is in the farm It's a lot of work for what average and most people are willing to pay for that quality and freshness. That is why the supermarket market continues to function because people prefer to pay cheap.

@@Wigwamwham we don’t need to force anyone to do anything. We need to educate folks. We need to become less reliant on large corporations for all of our food production. Plus, if there’s ever a natural disaster like an asteroid hitting Earth and wiping out half of the country, everyone is going to need to feed themselves until order is restored, which could take a lifetime. At least folks will be able to grab their chickens and reproduce them rapidly to feed themselves until they get crops growing.

@BreakingNewRoots there are a variety of milkweed plants. So you can pick and choose what you think looks best. Every government building along their migration path should have some milkweed. HOAs should be banned from regulating its presence.

Interesting in the US you have to wash your eggs & in the UK the eggs natural protection is left on them. Hence we don’t have to put them in the fridge.

I'm from Michigan. When the interviewer said, "What are you talking about?" it reminded me of our wonderful education system.
I mean it’s not just our education system, I just hadn’t ever heard of Michigan being explained that way before, I’m not from there. It was a fun thing to learn though! It reminds me that we are never too old to learn something new.
Maps and geography is important. The host could spend more time with them to understand patterns in land use alone.

The rubber under the gate is great, but how do you keep them from jumping the fence? No matter what we do, what I'm chickens we buy, what we feed, clip their wings THEY FLY OVER, THEY JUMP OVER. I truly don't get how you plus tons of other people just don't seem to mention their birds jumping out, stealing from their garden, shitting on their deck 😅 HOW do tell, you guys are magicians.

Awesome farm you have Joe. My neighbor is a turkey farmer. 18,000 4 times a year growing them for 20 weeks.
Oh wow!! That’s amazing! Joe is doing some really great things on his farm!
It seems like what he is doing is well run and thought out but as in most farming ventures they are very capital intensive up front. Some things like hoses you can go cheap but when your talking about Layer barns, greenhouses, packing houses, and on and on how do you build out your farm financially. Ive been farming my entire life and the profit margin has always been too low to ever justify scaling up.
That is a really good point. I can’t speak on Joe’s behalf but I believe he would say something along the lines of: it takes time, big things don’t happen over night.
Farming is very capital-intensive! However, I think we owe it to our customers to stay in business in order to feed them for years to come. In order to stay in business and to grow our business, we need to charge a premium for out premium products. Our goal is to be able to charge less as we reach more economies of scale.
From my understanding AMP ranching produces more lbs of beef per acre with vastly less inputs. I would think that could be duplicated with other animals to an extent. Will Harris' farm raises a multitude of animals. Running poultry through paddocks after cattle is apparently very effective. Their pecking and scratching helps the cow manure to get into the soil better and their own feces is nitrogen rich.
I may be completely wrong though. Only know a little. Also eliminates the need for most mechanization.
Oh for sure! What’s so amazing about farming is that there are so many different ways to do things. And things can change rather quickly and somewhat easily. We will actually get to see White Oaks Pasture soon and will post that video shortly after our video!
We can feed everyone on the planet with just smaller gardens and farms. The animals would be much healthier, the plants will have more nutrition . We need to build our food education and show all the good we can do by going back to having skill trades. Less corporate ran farms more independent.

I worked on a farm very similar to this one, but they used an electric fence for around the schooner. The tractors would really wear and tear a lot into the grass. Their dogs would eat eggs, and were not trained well and would be a danger to the birds. (And potentially to the people too because they would recourse gard egg gathering trays, injured birds, poop and eggs) I don't know if they kept them with the birds. I like this more spacious design, but you would need dogs for sure.
Oh yes. There are so many different ways to do things and then different more so depending on the farmer. That’s my favorite reason for this series and talking to so many farmers, we can see all the different ways to do things.

Focus changed from eggs to meat... funny, I'm by myself on a 125x80 lot in the subs as well, and also started with egg layers. I have 4-6 depending on timing and now do 10-12 meat birds 3-4 times a year, also depending on timing and freezer space. I won't be going big of course, but its interesting how eggs seem to be the gateway to meat for some. I just wasn't going to leave my ability to feed myself to supply chains and an inept government. I'm working on my own dual purpose heritage bird so I won't even need hatcheries if things get bad.
What a great way to be self sustaining!! Egg layers do seem to be the gateway haha. Are you selling the extras at all or is it just for yourself??
@@BreakingNewRoots Just for myself for now. I'm carnivore so they don't last very long. I need about 5-6 birds to keep up, really. Also forgot to mention, I actually use meat birds (Freedom Rangers) as layers. I'm getting about a dozen every 5 days from 4 birds, which is very good for a Cornish based bird; which that batch of rangers happened to be. My two starts are 13 & 11.5lb. :o)

We do have nesting boxes but unfortunately, a small percentage of the hens still lay on the ground.

With the layers, they can roll the sides down. It will stay quite warm. However, I can’t speak to their moving abilities. Definitely worth asking in a follow up conversation!
I probably missed this, but where do they actually process their meat birds? I saw the freezers, but that didn't explain to me whether they actually do the butchering there, or hire it out to a local processor. and then bring the meat back.
And if they do it there, is that also a state or USDA inspected facility that they built on site?
Great question. They take it to a USDA inspected processor and then bring the packaged meat back for resale.
I love how the states law demands you wash the eggs. Thus making them spoil faster. All for the "economy"

How many chickens are lost to predators when out in free pasture ?
They have a LGD so their loss is actually quite low. The chickens are also locked up at night so that helps too.

You have good interview skills, so I felt it was worth mentioning the only thing that took away from your content. Maybe switching up your wording or a silent nod would show your engagement without giving you so much editing work?
Thank you so much!! That really means a lot! Your feedback was well received. But yes, I have changed up a little about my engagement and also our editing techniques slightly. That was an early interview, when we first started about 6 months ago. We have learned so much and will continue to learn more I’m sure but we really enjoy meeting people and authentically telling their personal stories. Like you said, we noticed too that a lot of game tours focus on the farm and a little less in the farmer. Our intent is to share more than just the products of a farm. ❤️

Thank you so much!! 4H is an organization that supports youth involvement through agriculture. It starts in grade 3 and goes through high school. The kids complete a project and are judged on its criteria. These projects can be many things from cake decorating and Lego building to livestock.

Love this but it’s not regenerative right it’s just free range? Or am I missing something?
It’s regenerative. The chickens are partly free range but as noted, they don’t tend to go far from their home. By moving their home forward a space length every day their manure can be focused in one area or another and managed so that they don’t return to a certain spot in a certain amount of time. This is for the layers. But for the meat chickens (which we didn’t get to see that day) they do not roam outside of their home so their manure is very concentrated and again moved every single day so as to not build up too much and not to return to that spot for an amount of time. The term regenerative can be somewhat subjective but is it commonly agreed that if the farm practices are adding to the soil, instead of removing from the soil, it is considered regenerative. It’s also good to note that each farm can manage their animals and pastures differently but have the same benefits to the soil and animals. We have seen many different management practices and styles through our farm tours, each one of them running a successful farm with healthy animals.

I admire the enterprise but aghast at the lack of knowledge of their products .The chicken is a forest bird so yes it will not go out without protection from sky predators,no matter how tempting .This lack of understanding creates the system that we have ended up now Monoculture and mass production .Where animals and birds survive but don't thrive

Do you have to wash eggs in America?
Yes and no. Varies state to state, but majority of the regulations to sell in a public setting i.e. grocery stores or even farmers markets, do require eggs to be washed. Most states allow selling of eggs directing off farm to consumer to not be washed, but there's regulation over it

As the owners and the farmers, you do not need to be answering the phone emails text messages get some good consultation from somebody because what you said is a signal that you’re not getting good mentorship. Hire somebody to do all that pay them three or $4000 a month that’s a going ratefor a good office manager. They’ll pay for themselves 3 to 4 times minimum in the amount of money that you pay them per month.
Oh absolutely!! And Joe might be on his way there. But also, I think it can be difficult for farmers, small business owners in general really, to see when it’s time to make that move

For me regenerative agriculture would mean regenerating the soil biome and growing on that land, so that animals like chickens can forage and create compost that helps that land's fertility. So for me having chicken tractors restricting them to a lawn without tree cover, keeping a limited amount of species or types of chicken and not having cockerels seems like a more humane thing but not specifically regenerative in terms of the earth and its biodiversity
That’s a great point. I believe there are many different ways that we, individually, can contribute to a better world. Some ideas are better for some than others. Personally, we tried to have chickens in an open area but an owl quickly realized how open they were and started feasting, we even had a guardian goose. I think for smaller flocks, an open area could work great, depending on surrounding predators.
@@BreakingNewRoots on my granddad's farm all manner of birds would convene under a big bush with all the roosters, geese, turkeys and everyone strutting about outside if any of them saw eagles or hawks circling about..
@@BreakingNewRoots certainly what they are doing here is so much better than factory farming and I'm glad to include them as a more large scale and less regenerative per se, while on the other extreme you have woods or jungles that can also be edible forests or the like, but that are more of a complete ecosystem that supports you as well, whereas this is reaching more people and less of a wild or naturally diverse place. For my chickens I definitely want a nice place with tree cover and maybe smaller scale tractors for them to hang out in..
Oh for sure! And this is why we love the journey we are on. We believe everyone has a seat at the table. I’m so glad you are able to do that with your chickens and that you are happy with where you are.
