Got an 06 SEL AWD. Currently at 165k miles. Almost fully loaded aside from heated seats, which I can definitely use here in PA. This car is amazing in the snow. Practically unstoppable. It did need some repairs, but very reliable. The only thing that bugs me is the automatic lights are way too touchy. But I can live with that
I got a clean silver, 2006 with black leather and was lucky enough to get a factory touch screen navigation. Bought it for $1200 off Craigslist and intended on this being my second car, while I buy something new. But I fell in love with this car and really enjoy not having a car note. Even in 2018, I still get compliments when it’s clean. Plenty of cabin space...I absolutely love this car

Plenty of room, front/side sir bags , moon roof, with a massive trunk.I change the oil regularly, just had transmission fluid changed for 2nd time, have flushed radiator, I put better brake pads and rotors from Napa on it. I have about 138,000 miles now, mostly put on in first few years.
I drove one of these to 214k mikes, till rust got to it. It’s one of the best cars I ever had. We took this car on cross country camping trips and it was *far* more comfortable than even the large SUV’s we’ve been in. No worries about sharing cabin space with the luggage because the trunk was 24 cu Ft. Better mileage even with AWD, and interior space to rival a full sized truck. I once drive a 14 hour truck with no body fatigue. Oh, and it was very safe. It’s too bad. People are nuts about SUV’s, and that’s fine. But this car was severely underrated by the automotive press (‘Boring!’) because it was a safe, reliable, very comfortable family car and not a sports car. It didn’t sell as well as it should because I think it came at the end of the sedan era. But it was an amazing car.
Love mine too! 2007 SEL AWD. Approaching 187,000 miles. Had to replace the alternator recently. Oh well can't have everything. In the snow this car can't be stopped. Just change the oil regularly and keep up with other maintenance intervals. Would recommend to others. A certified pre-owned model would be the best bet.
you are so right - ours goes through the snow like a champ - even been in neighborhoods that hadn't been plowed - the AWD light on the dash came on once in awhile but not much - she is AWESOME!
Due to a mistake made by a mechanic and a substandard replacement water pump, I recently too the engine valve covers and timing chain covers off this car. The car has had mostly synthetic oil used in it but this engine shocked me in that it was by far the cleanest engine I’ve ever seen with this many miles on it (187,000), most of the internals literally appeared new. Even the intakes and valves were clean and smooth. That tells you the engine tolerances are tight, are correct, and that this engines computer management is flawless therefore burning fuel as clean and efficient as possible. Well made car.
We love our 2006 Ford five hundred. Fast acceleration and very smooth braking. Gracie (cars name) has a 3.0 V-6 with FWD that even works great in the snow and slush.
We have a 2005 Five Hundred AWD Limited. it has been the BEST car EVER - only one repair done on the a/c compressor - runs like a top - goes through snow like a champ - we LOVE IT and will keep it as long as possible. (Last year ordered a 2015 Taurus AWD - this too is an AWESOME car - nothing better out there for us!! we love it just as much!!)
I agree. My '07 has the 6-speed auto. Although the engine wasn't as powerful as other competing sedans in it's class for the time, I think the 6-speed transmission more than made up for it. It's certainly faster than my previous Dodge Intrepid 3.5L which was fast as well. Mine is going on 245k miles and still runs smooth.
My Ford 500 has been the best car hands down that ive ever owned 11 years and 136k later it still runs perfect and no leaks only oil changes tune up and struts. also bought a Mercury Montego and it the same deal a perfect quality ride way better that that 2015 Chrysler 200s that I own
These are really exceptional used cars for the money. I see loaded, Mercury Montegos in Premier trim w/AWD for around $6000 all the time. It's not a sports sedan like a 3-Series or an A4, but if you are looking for a great, luxurious, touring car with a lot of room, this beats the pants off a boring Camry-Appliance any day ;)
The Five Hundred/ Montego, and then Taurus/ Sable were slept on vehicles. Sure they were not performers, but they are sure as heck very roomy and comfortable.
This sure was one of the best years for Ford, with the new 500, as what it seems like. Handsome car indeed...and soo much of the new structural integrity, the car might as well had been a tank!
My Aunt’s 05 Ford Five Hundred SE just hit the 65,000 mile mark. 😂 Yeah you read that right. She’s its one and only owner since it came off of the production line.
Nov 2018, just bought off Craigslist for 2200, fully loaded n tons of room for my 6'4" spread. This thing loves highways n fingertip control is sweet. You sit up high in this luxurious beast too, luv it.
Its nice to get real perspectives of people who own the vehicles vs. auto sites that have them for all of about a month. I really am going to consider the montego. I really love the styling and i drove it and it just goes fine. I am currently driving an f150 and one reason is parents like the saftey of it. But the montego is so comfortable; and I really hope to get it. It seems like it will do pretty decent; alot of people say cvt suck; when i drove it it worked very well. I was impressed!
thanks for the recommendation. Im just going into college; 18 years old and my parents like the car especially for winter awd. not to mention that this car gets decent milage (epa rating, then again its all how one drives) and it is rediculous how safe this thing is! i love the interior room as well. My grandparents have a crown vic and this has more interior room. I really will consider this now; plus i love the exterior/interior quality; engine seems a bit underpowered however.
Oh yeah, driving this car in the winter was no problem. When any kind of sleet or ice was on the road, the AWD kicked in when my tires barely started spinning. I have a 2 year old daughter and have a car seat in the middle of the rear bench seat. I can still fit 2 people on the sides comfortably and when the car seat is not there, I can easily fit 3 in the back with lots of room for all 3. For the room and fuel efficiency of such a big car, not to mention safe too, I would recommend it.
I have a 2007, had 72,000 when I bought it. Excellent car, gas mileage is 24 city and 31 highway, it’s a very comfortable car to dive and ride in, lots of trunk space. It’s a great car.
another thing; my parents drove a 2005 five hundred and bought a fusion instead; the 500 didnt seem to have much power but for some reason when i drove it this montego really was fine. Maybe it was just because it had been a rental and beat on alot or what but i was surprised with the montego. Appreciate the responses by the way; helping me decide what to consider!
Bought my 2007 2 years ago from a local dealer here in Maine, one of the first things he said was... I just replaced both sub frames with new ones(black paint still on them)... wanna see?... Hell ya... up on a lift it went. I looked it over.. and over again.... 135,000 miles has done this girl well. Long story short, he was asking 3000, well maintained for a car this old... Sold, what a solid car. Would buy another.
No problem. Yeah I love this car. I have a few videos of it on my page. Good gas, comfy, safe, and tons of room. And take it from me personally. About the engine being "underpowered" or "underrated", my friend has a 2007 Chrysler 300C Touring. V6 rated at 250hp. Time and time again, my 500 smokes his 300. Though its only 203hp and 207tq, the CVT makes up for it with a constant power flow. The 500/Montego's are awesome cars.
Why would I want the feel of a "regular" transmission? @ 80mph, I do 1800 RPM. And for merging onto lanes or when I need it, when the pedal is down, it stays at a constant 5800 RPM or so. Gives me efficiency and power when I need it.
My friend's dad has one of these, and they're amazing! It's like riding on a marchmallow, and the seats are so comfortable. And the seats are so high, it feels like I'm riding in a much larger car!
I don't know where people get the idea of CVT and/or AWD Montego's and 500's getting bad gas mileage. It all depends on how the person drives. I live in Texas, and on a full tank, I went from Austin, to Llano and back plus 2 weeks daily driving, 20miles+ a day from work to home and still had more left over. For highway driving, @ 70-75mph I am at 1700ish RPM's. So I would say it is pretty good for such a big car with the CVT. And I drive with a somewhat heavy foot.
And then the 500 name went away and became the Taurus. It should have been that was from the begining. However I do own a 2007 Taurus and that car is great.
I feel like this could've been its own thing, but they didn't promote it well and of course molded it into the Taurus for the 2009 year.......the Taurus and Taurus X .......and the Car/wagon craze began lol
If you don't really have to shift in an automatic transmission, what's the point of making the CVT, which doesn't even LET you shift? Even though I myself don't shift when I drive, I still think the CVT was a bad idea.
I love mine. She's getting ready to click over 100,000 miles. And thank the Lord I have had NO problems with the car. Was thinking about selling it to get another Ford F-150 but can't see in getting rid of a good problem free Ford 500.
@MaestroTJS the cvt's are unstoppable, every test technician I've talked to was amassed they couldnt kill it. in 08 they did away with the cvt in favor of a bigger engine, a mistake in my book. I would personally look into the sho model and the ecoboost models
Barath Vedant Styling and them being underpowered. The styling was too bland for a ‘new’ car at that time, and they basically put the same Duratec 3.0 that was in the 1996-2005 Taurus in the Five Hundred, which was a lil weak for that heavy of a car. Plus, it was just a bad idea at that time to completely kill off the Taurus, as they could’ve easily saved it, but they were too focused on investing in SUVs and trucks. They did good w/ the the 2008-09 Taurus rebrand tho, those sold pretty decent.
@Homecountry Oh this car definitely had fans, and I liked it, but Ford really didn't need to keep buyers, they needed to draw new ones and new buyers wouldn't be interested in a old school 3 box full size sedan.
They compare the interior to a crown vic. I can tell you that I have ridden in and driven my parents old 94 crown vic, and ridden in my parent's 07 ford five hundred. Tho the numbers might say otherwise, tge crown vic definitely had more room. I'm 6'5 and have ridden in the front and rear of both cars. The vic is bigger. My head touches the ceiling in the five hundred too.
i am currently looking at an 05 montego, is the cvt/awd really that bad on milage? i am looking for soemthing that gets good milage but its nice to drive and somewhat fun.
@ghost1103 I know wat u mean when they launched this car they bashed the Taurus alot compareing it 2 this car and the Fusion saying it was OUTDATED..But when the 500 didn do so good in sales they started bashing the 500 and started the "OH WE NEED THE TAURUS BACK"....To me i didn think the taurus version looked at home with this body style it needed to be its own like it was b4....IM a GM guy but when ford made the 00-06 taurus they hit the mark they are very dependble cars..GOOD JOB FORD!!!
wow thats really good. I am just asking i really do like the car alot. would you recommend buying one? its really nice fully loaded 77k miles and life time warranty (ford certified as well) for about 10k.. i could get it probably for about 9-9500. But im just asking because i need a good winter car (awd is nice) and i just heard they get bad milage. i will be doing mostly highway driving but with some city so if i can make a tank last 1-2 weeks thats perfect. (400-450ish miles)
Ali I just got mine for 1000 bucks lol I love it!!mine has the 6 speed and it is fast and sharp. I drove the cvt version and it just felt off to me but with the 6 speed it is great !
Does anyone have any personal experiences regarding reliability on this and the '08+ Taurus? I like everything about the car but have read some bad things regarding the transmissions.... I'm surprised no one has mentioned how similar it looks to the 1998-2005 VW Passat. It seems they didn't do particularly well with the car, which is a shame. I would probably buy it for the safety factor alone.
My mom bought one new in 2005 traded a 2000 Taurus. I thought the Taurus was a better car. The dead pedal area where you rested your foot was narrow and uncomfortable.
definately.....althought they just fixed everything that was wrong with the five hundred and brought back the taurus name it was needed in order to show people that great things were to come from ford ya know?
You're obviously an inexperienced driver.. That car is big and heavy .. I would say 270+ is more like it for this vehicle .. But as you can see that why this car did poorly.
I sure miss my 500, but I couldn't see spending $3,700. plus tax to rebuild the CVT. I needed reliable for work and I got a Toyota, its good but has no character, no class and can't fit 5 big guys and a massive trunk full of luggage. R.I.P. my Ford Five Hunderd. I spell it that way because that's how it was when I bought it and I left it that way. LOL I owned a one of a kind Ford Five Hunderd.
To all those saying this is a good car, well, I wanna live where you do! Obviously the climate where you are, and road conditions are better for this car. We here in the midwest with our typical bombed out roads, see these things breaking down all the time. Front suspension failures, electrical problems, emission component problems, and now rust plague these cars around here.
Adam Trombino I'm in the Midwest never had issue with mines. I paid $750 for mines and been driving it 2 years besides brakes I haven't had to do anything yet. Maintenance on cars is to be expected.
so if this was based on the xc90 and the decade old xc90 platform got a good rating on the iihs small overlap test then I bet this would have got the same rating too. if that was the case then it goes to show you how far Volvo was in safety, when cars today still can't get a good rating in that crash test.
I used to see these everywhere, what happened? Did Ford gather these up like a heard of Buffalo and chase them off a cliff? They literally disappeared. Well.... Thanks to who ever did. Day and Night difference from the new Taurus or Fusion.

@ynkno13 The current Taurus is a heavly revamped version of the Five Hundred.
Technically, it adopted the looks of the Five Hundred since its sales failed miserably. The Five Hundred was intended to retire the Taurus nameplate
@treyis2crazy The ride is just so damn comfortable though. And it can still bend around corners
wow thats really good.
I just bought one of these off craigslist.
Ali I just got mine for 1000 bucks lol I love it!!mine has the 6 speed and it is fast and sharp. I drove the cvt version and it just felt off to me but with the 6 speed it is great !
Ali I got a 07 with 169k on it
1,000? still run and drive? how'd ya find a deal like that?
I got mines today love this car
Tierra Benson what year and how many miles you got bro
The 6 speeds major flaw is it only lasts to around 80k miles.
I have an 06 with 157k on it. I love it!!!
Ive been tboned rear ended 3 times just took some wood screws screwed the bumper back on and kept rolling cars a tank
@darkchild8 any diff between years like 07
Does anyone have any personal experiences regarding reliability on this and the '08+ Taurus? I like everything about the car but have read some bad things regarding the transmissions....
I'm surprised no one has mentioned how similar it looks to the 1998-2005 VW Passat.
It seems they didn't do particularly well with the car, which is a shame. I would probably buy it for the safety factor alone.
Is this a good car too have? ?
MOST definitely!
Doe Boy without question!
Did you get one?
no
Yes but don't get the cvt
I've got a friend who drives a five hundred. Sad he moved back to Illinois
@wtl1964 not really only slightly different features like maybe the rims.
My mom bought one new in 2005 traded a 2000 Taurus. I thought the Taurus was a better car. The dead pedal area where you rested your foot was narrow and uncomfortable.
Is this a good car for a first time driver
Yeeeeeees
I bought mine when it was five years old and had to replace everything in that car. Eight years later, I just got rid of it. 😁😁😁
I have a Ford Freesteyle CVT, the transmission is broken. 6 months under renovation. The most unsuccessful transmission CVT ..
If they had a V8 it could've been the new Crown Victoria.
Getting a modern crown Vic vibe with this
OMG I wish I had this car!
I have a black Limited with 74,000 miles in mint condition. It’s faster off the mark than my BMW 745i and just as luxurious.
got a 2005 limited awd cvt with only 100k on it in march 2021 i love it bro got a crazy deal
I loved mine
how reliable are those cvts?
A ton more reliable than the automatics. I've heard the automatic needs a complete rebuild after 30k miles
@@thelonelywolf88 sitting on 180k 6 speed treats well
Yea. We got an 05 a year ago for $300. Has 175k but its alright.
6-speed and cvt? thought in this day it would have been a 4-speed or maybe a 5 if lucky
definately.....althought they just fixed everything that was wrong with the five hundred and brought back the taurus name it was needed in order to show people that great things were to come from ford ya know?
It was a great car but it didn't sell well, it got replaced by the resurrected Taurus.
That doesnt look like the previous Taurus! Dummies! Great car!
Whats wrong with CVT?
This was my first car.. LOL
200 hp is weak? I thought that would be plenty for a small car
You're obviously an inexperienced driver.. That car is big and heavy .. I would say 270+ is more like it for this vehicle .. But as you can see that why this car did poorly.
Id have drive one to be sure but you might be right they probably should have put their 4.0 in it rather than the 3.0
I had one it handled ok power was decent it didn't lack power but it was pretty tame but had a nice ride passing was a breeze
IMO the 3.0 is adequately powered as i have a 2006. when they renamed the 500 the taurus in 08 it got a larger 3.5 with 263 hp
+lounge room tv I have a Ford Five Hundred. and when I mash the pedal it goes.
@ 3:44 . Hey man you shouldnt be swerving like that, there's a cop sitting rite there.
LOL I owned a one of a kind Ford Five Hunderd.
shame. since it basically was a volvo with ford badge. it looks like a safe tank
It was ment to replace the outdated crown vic instead of the taurus
no - it was meant to replace the Taurus.
well the ford five hundred is a fullsize car
It should've replaced the crown victoria.
cool a chevy malibu
I should have bought a new one.. my used Montego was a lemon...
Машина супер
so if this was based on the xc90 and the decade old xc90 platform got a good rating on the iihs small overlap test then I bet this would have got the same rating too. if that was the case then it goes to show you how far Volvo was in safety, when cars today still can't get a good rating in that crash test.
I used to see these everywhere, what happened? Did Ford gather these up like a heard of Buffalo and chase them off a cliff? They literally disappeared.
Well.... Thanks to who ever did. Day and Night difference from the new Taurus or Fusion.
i see them everywhere where I live AWESOME cars - trouble free!
The five hundred should've replaced the crown victoria
Remember the Scorpio? Thats what it looks like. Just newer.
I traded in my 92 grand marquis for a ford 500
Had a Ford Freestyle 05, CVT trans JUNK.
How did you fix it? I have a Ford Freesteyle CVT, the transmission is broken. 6 months under renovation. Horror and rage.
Priora as five hundred
Then they ruined it and molded it into the Ford Taurus and the five hundred was gone....
Problem with this car was simply that it was kind of dull. Nothing special. Can't get new buyers on that. Not to say I don't like it.
