- The Poenari Fortress is placed on the top of Cetatuia Mountain, at 25 km north from Curtea de Arges. Its name was given after that of a village found at 6 km distance. It is also known as "The Fortress of Vlad Tepes" or "The Fortress of Negru Voda".
Initially the nucleus of the fortress consisted of a squared tower (the external sides: 8,15m x 8,5 m the inner sides: 4,30m x 4,60m). It is considered to be built in the first half of the 14th century, during the reign of Basarab 1 (1324-1351/1352), the founder of Walachia.
The fortress was built directly on the rock. It is made of mortar pasted crude stone. It had three wooden Floors. Its roof was shingle covered.
I have always wanted to see Poenari Fortress. Thank you for this great video. Even if I had the financial means to travel to Romania, I can not walk well enough to ever climb the stairs. Your video is the closest I will ever get to experiencing Peonari Fortress.
Beautiful mountains and valleys.
Excellent video, very detailed with diagrams of zones visited. I can see in detail all the inner space, thank you a lot.
Thank you for sharing this! (My legs are aching just watching you climb those stairs! 🤣) I'm listening to The Historian (awesome horror novel centered on Vlad Tepes) and there is a scene involving this castle in it's current state. It was cool to see what it really looks like! ☺️
Va multumesc pentru ajutorul domneavoastra eu sunt din Rumania 🇷🇴
Excelente Vídeo!!! Um muito Obrigado do Brasil.
This is just the right information I needed! Thank you! Wonderful video!

Wish someday I can visit Rumania.
Every journey begins with the first step.😩
thanks for sharing Edward Rozylowicz
It's a 2 hour drive I guess. I'd recommend to visit Poenari Castle first and head further to Bran after that. There are lots of campsites over there.
I can't believe it said "Sunteti Aici" and subcaptioned "You are here" on that sign.
I mean, it could have been russian, serbian, ukranian, languages of bordering countries, but no. English. I love Romania a little bit more now.
patriots ...give it back to me , please.
The castle became ruins after Simon Belmont defeated Dracula.
XD
Great video. Any idea where I can find info on if this castle was ever attacked and what kind of difficulties there would have been trying to scale these walls?
A look down from a high point on the whole castle would have been nice. Still a good video. And usually these "tourist" videos aren't very well made. Particularly when you have loud wind noise.
Supposesly it was taken by the Turks during Vlad's second reign. And his wife jumped to her death rather than be imprisoned
How far is Bran castle from this place. Are there any hotels in Poenari?
I know, bro' ! But. is Tepes, not Topes... :) And, for accuracy, Ţepeş
Who the f*ck is Vlad Topes ? [ 00:26 ] :)))))
