- In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 2004 VW Phaeton. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.
The Phaeton is one of those cars that looks completely normal to most people, but to a car person will make them stop whatever they're doing and just stare in awe.
yeah, excellent car. too bad most idiots disregard them outright. the chinese realise its value. Now they get it as phideon.
This is the kind of car that gives Mercedes, BMW, and Jaguar a run for there money, and shows them what a luxury car should be.
Charles Earle it looks so boring tho
Understated and boring is exactly what some prefer. But clearly, it did not sell as well as VW had hoped in the North American market.
Gixxeff 750 Compared to what exactly?
The Phaeton is one of the most under-rated vehicles in the automotive world! I always thought that this was a wonderful car.
Tony Wise youre right, if audi doesn't have A8, phaeton will be much more popular.
+Tony Wise Its sad that a really beautiful car was a low sales.
+Roberto Demarco its unfortunate that people shy away because of it not having a prestige logo
I totally agree.
Roberto Demarco it's a boring car
Still impressive looking after more than ten years!
Nice looking car
A shame the American public didn't take enough interest in this car. It was so sophisticated in many ways. The only thing they did wrong was not borrow Audi A8's space frame for the chassis. But this car is essentially the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.
Joe Black In what way is this a pile of junk?
Exactly that’s why I call Americans American’ts
The Audi A8 and phaeton doesn't share the same chassis?
@@rafapenson 7 year old comment. Not sure lol. I know Audi A8 used space frame and was lighter weight than Phaeton.
This car is freaking nice even for today's standards. It has aged really well
This is one of those cars real car guys know.
Yes
Yup
@@carlosc30 YES!!
@@carlosc30 hi
Yea I used to mistaken it for a passat but after I got to know the name I somehow remembered
Ahead of its time. more luxury than cars of today. 10 years later.
full led tail lights and cars today are still being made with not even half of these features. its insane lol
yeah me either this is such an underrated car
20 years now
It's funny that a 2004 vw phantom is still more advanced than most American cars today
in fact yeah :D
+MrABedRules how much can you get a used one With good milage
+Fedrick Santos $8000-9000.
It's $90,000 car that looks like a cheap $14000 car though.
I've seen the V8 variant with under 100,000 miles for 5,000.
I'm not a Volkswagen fan by any means, but this truly is one of the most impressive cars I've seen, especially with the kind of technology it's got. Vent controls like that may seem like over kill, but the idea and technology behind the entire car is just amazing.
Proof that VW makes the best cars in the world. The Phaeton is highly underrated.
totally agree!
I recently discovered it....I now own one for 12 grand, mint condition v8 2004, couldnt be happier
If you include ALL the VW Motor Group brands you COULD argue that (VW, AUDI, PORSCHE, BENTLEY, BUGATTI, LAMBORGHINI, SEAT and SKODA). But that's not a fair argument because all the major ones are very independent. Is VW the best in the world as a stand alone company? No. NOPE. And NOPE AGAIN.
marc1093280 if it was so great how come no one bought it?
Any company that can single handedly engineer and create the Bugatti Veyron is a good one.
The fact that Welcome to the Family came on just gives me another reason to want one
Me too, and I have a 2015 VW Passat which is very nice, but now I would like to look into purchasing one of these. I wonder how many are floating around today?
Not to many they are a pretty rare car especially w12
Yep, there's only one for sale in my state. Makes me want one the more.

This car was light years ahead of its time..... Only true car enthusiasts can pick out a Phaeton on the road and appreciate the amazing engineering put into it. I saw a Phaeton just yesterday but I couldn't get close enough to see if it was a W12...
for a 2004 this Car was way ahead of its time 🖒🖒
wow incredible options for 2004
Navid Ettehadi Indeed, I was at a car show last week, and I noticed that many of the features this 11 year old car has, are only now becoming available as (often overpriced) options on mid size models.
let me be honest: people around the world (specially Americans) were stupid to prefer Mercedes-Benz s600 to this masterpiece just because of the brand's name. it's a car that remains modern, feels modern and looks modern even after 20 years. but when you look at a 2004 Mercedes-Benz s class you say: this is an old Mercedes. it was the last masterpiece of ferdinand piech before retirement. he is ferdinand porsche's grandson.
As one man said, "Don't think of it as the people's car, rather the people's limousine."
Really looks like the best 2004 car money can buy, including A8, BMW 7 series, etc. This thing is luxurious as hell and does 200 mph...that's insane.
Such a special car and a shame VW gave it the same key as a Golf 😂😂
The first Veyrons had the same key with a Bugatti logo. 😂
all VWs of the same generation have the same key, it works well and at least you don't need a specific part for every single model, think about it it's for our own benefit.
Audi a8's from that generation have the same key as well. And as someone else said its a greatly designed key. My dad owned an a8 from that generation and I love the key.
Cesar Hanson what in the fuck does a key have to do with anything. please explain you fucking idiot cesar salad
Okay I have to post another comment. After watching the entire video I am dumb founded by how innovative this car is, and it was made seven years ago! Thank you so much Kyle for this awesome find!
A fail here in the states for "luxury car" market because it said VW on it but I've always had a thing about liking those possibly because it looks simalar to the passat at the time and would be a good sleeper if it didn't say W12 on it the passat driver would be confused when it zoomed away; I'll love that car forever.
Don't they make a w8 passat? Those are pretty fast. I think this car has way too many cylinders and not enough power.
That W12 , sounds so smooth I bet you if you put a glass of water on top or near the intake manifolds there's going to be practically zero vibration
Those trunk hinges though....
They are from the buggati veyron
Phaeton's Are Some Underrated Bad Ass Cars😭😭💖💖💖💖😍
Jahseree Bohanan Has to be one of the most underrated vehicles.
Wow this is the first time I've ever seen the Phaeton. I usually go for name brand cars like Mercedes and BMW and this honestly surpasses both the S Class and 7-Series of its same year. This is Bentley-type luxury and I love the unique detail on ever inch of this car. I'd get myself a W12 of these if I would find a good one around me but sadly they are extremely rare, even the base V8 models are hard to come by. After all.... I think this was 20 grand more than an S and a 7 at the time so that may been the reason there are so little because people would spend 20 grand less and get a name brand s class recognizable on the road. But for me with that same mentality, I really like this car
VW actually owns Bentley, so the electronics and the W12 engines are actually VW engineering, let's not forget that those are the same guys who engineered the bugatti veyron, unfortunately people tend to hate on VW because of the american spec cars they get in the USA, they don't know that the European versions are a completely different experience.
i'm the only one who hasn't seen this car in real life????
I seen one yesterday. I thought it was a Audi.
it looks like a passat, so may have missed it.
I'm going to try to buy one....for a commute car....for around 7,000$
*****
Buy one not as a daily driver but investment. If kept in mint condition with low miles these will start to appreciate in a few years. Especially the W12 version.
***** We have a clueless kid over here.
A piece of advice, if you want to be a car enthusiast you need some minimum knowledge.
the cars are depreciating for some obvious reasons, not everybody like it but not a single car lover thinks the VW Pheaton is "junk" besides you.
And if you can't see even those reasons, I suggest you move on an go find another hobby, because the car world is clearly not for you.
this car is awesome i have a jetta vr6 and its got a lot of kick but i can't even imagine how fast this is
Holy crap. All the features... and thats especially alot for a 2004 car!
What a beautiful car!
I believe that's an ash tray, not a CD player.
LOL he meant the CD player before he went to the ash tray, his brain got some lag XD
That aside, for that small moment I thought how would be like crushing up a CD and throwing in there. Heh such strange thoughts
This car was so ahead of its time
Wow this is one of the nicest cars I have seen I would buy it if I had the money
You can find mint condition Phaetons for 15 k
When i first got this car (my dad) i wasnt really a fan of it however i started learning about the gadgets and what not. Much more advanced than a lot of cars these days
Excellent presentation, especially on the beautiful interior. Overall, this car represents the
Bauhaus Design very well. As a retired Human Factors Engineer (ergonomics, etc.) I find the
instrumentation layout quite nice and efficient. Does anyone know how reliable these cars
have been?
Not very reliable as far as I know. I even read that the W12 engine tends to drink lots of oil once it reaches about 100,000km.
It pisses me off as I'd really love to own a Phaeton. They're excellent cars to drive.
as long as you don't get the W engine it's great, VW electronics and mechanics are very reliable.
I love the wooden piece that opens and closes to cover the AC vents. It's so original instead of just having a little wheel to open/close the vent
I bought one of these about 3 months ago and put cutouts right after the header and it sounds hilarious. I've one to so many car meets and no one knows it's me
If you want to know how it feels to drive a Bentley but don't have the money, this is the car you should buy. Excellent value!
Enormous...amazing ...because its easy and few expensive(quality/price ratio) to drive a phaeton w12 for all days using. .. and if you can found it because its rarely... for a fraction of Bentley price you have this car in perfect condition...
Phaetons are nice, my grandad has one, it's not long until he goes to heaven and I'll get the phaeton:)
+its_ tristan wtf lol
+Brian2094ify haha they're just nice cars 😂😂 & I'd rather let my grandad go than letting him suffer any longer in the hospital tbh
I am very sorry about your grandfather's condition, but you should never talk about him like that!
Senior Lopez so did you get the phaeton?
Did u get the car, heartless prick?? xD
Those trunk struts are BEAUTIFUL. This entire car is BEAUTIFUL. I desperately want one.
The amount of Engineering is amazing
We're talking about he same guys who engineered the bugatti veyron.
Sad thing is this car is only worth 7000$
No, I disagree, it's fantastic, more people can afford it this way, considering the maintenance costs it would help a bit getting the car for a low price even if it's unfair towards it ;)
one of the best cars ever produced...hands down
Holy shit this is 2004 VW??? Its nicer than a my 2004 Audi A6 Quattro
It also cost 100k$ when brand new
$100k? Only thing nicer than the 04 Audi A6 Quattro is the color LCD. I wouldn't pay $100k for it, you can get a new Audi A8L for that price, much nicer and more reliable.
It was basically an Audi A8 W12, but ,much more discreet
And I have an 03 RS6 and while that's much faster this thing blows it out of the water in terms of fit and finish and luxury
Vee Langer
Oh Word!?
Will ALWAYS be one of my favorite cars. I dream about owning one
Secondhand, you can get these for 16k euros. And for that kind of money, you can even get it with an extended wheelbase. I love the Phaeton.
+appelpower1 I've seen them for $13k in Seattle with a W12. Problem is, the maintenance costs will drain your bank account.
KirillVL Unfortunately, they will. But anyone who has a 25k budget can get one of these instead (still great value) and use the leftover money to keep it running for a few years.
13k? 16k?? Where do you guys live? You can get one with 5k
Roger That I was looking at one with a W12 several years ago, so yeah maybe they are cheaper. $5,000 for a w12 Phaeton means that the car probably needs some major work done.
Roger That Here, you can get a 3.0 TDI with 300k kilometres (mind you, this is a very reliable car) for five grand. But the W12 is a bit more expensive than that.
EPIC! Love the Phaetons! no one appreciates how nice they are!
Good and terrible car at the same time. The W12 engine and attention to detail are amazing, but at $100,000 you're not paying for the car, you're paying for the logo. The rich don't want to drop their money to be seen in a Volkswagen. If this had a Mercedes or even Bentley nameplate instead, this car would have sold like hotcakes. Arguably the best car in the world when it came out in 2003 that nobody wanted.
The good news is that after all these years, it's become a more affordable option for people craving luxury that don't want to break the bank.
I agree, only because Volkswagen carries mostly compact sports sedans that less likely carry the luxuries of a S-Class or 750Li...
Philip Jackson Until you have to fix it, remember its still a $100,000 car with $100,000 car problems. So repairing this beast will eat your wallet to pieces if you're the average Joe.
***** I don't know what they has to do with repair cost of the car, also no the Phaeton didn't come with a stick, it only came with an auto.
Are you sure? Because I just checked and I don't see any that came with a stick or FWD, big Luxury cars like this don't usually come with manual transmissions. Do you have a link because I'm curious if you're getting it confused with the Passat by mistake.
Thank you man ... I have always loved the quirky luxury cars over my life time and this is one I never knew about.
This car was waaaaaaay ahead of its time!!!! The outside is pretty ugly, however the inside is beautiful. I can't believe all the features on this 04 VW!!!!
More like manufacturers these days are deliberately letting out loads of features and then they include them in high end trims saying its a wow feature when in fact its been there all time along... Greedy bastards
All those features!!! That's just an amazing car. Nice review ,Kyle!
Man this car screams for some cooler wheels, dark tint, and a suspension tuck
hell yes!!!!! just made my day kyle, wanted to see you make a video on this car in this configuration for SO LONG!!!! awesome man, love you long time!!!
That NSX 😱
I like how the wood grain lifts up to reveal the vents when you start the car. I have personally never seen one of these. They're cool.
Avenged Sevenfold !5:48 where do you live where they actually play good music on the radio?
NC it seems
This boy is a real auto mobile enthusiast. I wish he can buy whatever car he is dreaming to get. He deserves it.
I don't understand why some people would not own a Volkswagen. What is wrong with owning a VW? "The Logo" what is wrong with the logo? Why can't VW have expensive models? I'm a proud owner of the rare VW Corrado VR6 why should I be embarrassed of its Volkswagen badges?
Why can't VW be a worthy Make? They been in the business since the 30s way before Nissan Honda and Toyota. Just don't understand the hate for VW. All you VW or German car haters continue to drive your cheap everyone and everywhere Toyota and Honda.
The price for a Phaeton is in the class nearly to Mercedes/Audi' prices. Many want to have the grat image, a VW has lower image than Mercedes/Audi. Though the Phaeton is more exclusive than S-Class/A8, considering he stands on Bentley's Platform and is made in a manufactury. He offers luxury and exclusivity as wanted in the highclass.
***** Phaeton has had massive depreciation. You can pick up base models for 6k. W12 premium for 14k. BEST deal in luxury vehicles. Top Model was 112k New.
Grant .Pantling
Yes, indeed. The massive depreciation is sad for the owners, but for the ones with lower budget and interest in luxury cars a preowned Phaeton an good opportunity. Furthermore Phaeton is available as V10, wich is not often to find.
Not really hate, its just that this is their top-of-the-line luxury car when they're not really known for luxury...more like fun, convenience and stuff...what if Volkwagen made a 2015 Volkwagen V8 Coupe 465hp RWD pony car, that competes with the new Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger? It would seem kinda weird considering that they aren't known for those types of cars.....................hope this helps! :)
VW is shit.
The corresponding model of Passat of that era was a nice car, the last one to be built in Germany for the NA market. It did had problems with the engine head and turbo when non synthetic oil was used (1.8T engine), costly suspension arms, door lock actuators, etc. The 1.8T engine was really weak in city but great for overtaking. For a german car, it was really well made with great driving position and handling on the highway. I suspect the Phaeton to be even times better which should actually be quite impressive.
This was a real competition with Mercedes
CloroxBleach and bently
Thanks to you Addy VW's still rollin' strong in this day and age and I myself have a People's car, the Passat.
I didn't pay attention to the year when I clicked on the video I just saw a pretty Volkswagen, and when you said 2004 I thought "no way, it looks at minimum of 2009." This is a car I could see myself driving. Thank you Kyle. Happy New Year
This car can reach a top speed of 201 mph delimited, as said by Jeremy Clarkson. I hope that's true.
well youre an angry little shit arent you
Gabriel Alvarez basically a highway Cruise missile
This is a great car! The bentley continental flying spur is build on the same platform, when you look at the interior the gps and the buttons on the seats are exactly the same just that there is a little more chrome in the bentley. The chassis is the same, the engine too. But the Bentley has to turbocharger which help it to perform 560hp an the 4wd is the same too.
Nothing says European car like not being able to see any part of the engine.
*German
George Jordan I'm gonna let you in on a secret. Germany is part of Europe.
lynchburgcsi57 I know kid, but but Britons nor Italians would fucking cover up an engine.
George Jordan Untrue.
lynchburgcsi57 No.
that w12 engine is an amazing engine, its an amazing car!
these cars are well slept on, only because of the Volkswagen badge.
i absolutely love that exhaust set up
once you need to maintain it . it will properly bankrupt you . just like Audi , BMW , and Mercedes Benz . nice look advance auto mobile that will kill your wallet if you don't have enough money on you . unfortunately i love it !!!
you just tell them it's a passat XD
+abd bach true. Lol
+abd bach honestly it might even work.
I would LOVE to own one of these. Thanks for all of your in-depth videos!
good song lol
Impressive! The Phaeton really is the automotive equivalent of ShamWow - you just have to say "wow!" every time.
Avenged Sevenfold at 6:03!!!
Love that sog when he turned on the radio: "avenged Seven-fold, Welcome to the family"
Unexpected car from vw!
shut up , when you'll make your own car then you can say about other cars are shit.
Can everyone stop fucking fighting on my comment? Thanks
I have an 04 Beetle. It's crazy how the interior parts and controls are familiar because of that... like I have the extreme bare bones version of this.
This isn't an '04. '04s didn't have the wood around the center console cup holders like this one does.
some Mercedes and Jaguars have been doing that since 70s... learn more about cars kid (:
+escobar 370gt What the heck are you even talking about? I was talking about the VW, not some old Merc.
Spitfire599 obviously you don't know about cars... VW has been having that way far back from "04s" Mercedes and Jaguar was an example ... Learn more kid
+escobar 370gt Okay, you're obviously a thick-headed moron who has no idea what I'm talking about. I know that VW and all those cars have been doing that since the '70s. What I mean is that the 2004 Phaeton had leather material around the cupholder area, where as the '05 and '06 had wood. Think before you open your god damn mouth.
Spitfire599 didn't ready you message but cool story kid learn more about cars (:
Nice Review as always Saabkyle..
Quick non car related question to all.
Which song was that on the radio, I really liked it..
It was a mistake getting rid of this model
They didn't
Is it still called the same or what is It now?
Mr. Myrrh E. Povich-Chung lol you don't know the full story I guess, the lose around 28k on every phaeton they sell, R&D costs them 1billion dollar and there goal was to sell at least 20k of them a year. Amazing car though
Bentley continental is a 2dr Pheaton technically.....engine is exactly the same!
avivmaks lk
jesus fucking christ I said it has the same engine and your talking about turbochargers!
That has to be the most feature pack car you have reviewed yet! Great review, getting all the functionality in. Happy new year as well!
no doubt it a beautiful car, unfortunately its the most problematic VW ever made!!
And has one of the worst depreciation!
FuZionSniperzZ
Uhhhh no? saw one for sale in BC Canada for $25k, please tell me any other 2004 still worth that?
Lol.. It was a 100k car.. They are a mechanical nightmare especially the 12 cylinder version
Nathan S They even mentioned it being one of the worst on auto trader...
Al B Do you know what other problems the car potentially has? Many models I've seen for sale have a millage of over 200.000 KM and some even go up to 500/600K. This is usually a sign that this is a dependable car (because worn down, high millage cars are usually shipped to eastern Europe where they don't take vehicle quality checks as seriously).
I'm considering a 2003 4.2 V8 Highline model with 128.500 KM on it at 12.000 euro's (16.000 dollars).
this is one of the most if not THE MOST under rated car.
CLOSE THE DOOR!
I am totaly speechless! May the New Year give you great joy, Happy New Year to you and your family!
poor mans Audi a8 :D
Couldn't be more wrong
The Phaeton was actually positioned to be above the A8 in terms of luxury. The Phaeton shared its chassis with the Flying Spur and was more refined than the A8, the A8 was positioned to be the sportier luxury sedan like a 7 Series.
This is my 3 month Anniversary to being subscribed. Have a happy new year!
Why the quality is so much different from VW Polo 2017. They are from the same VW, arent they?
it looks like the car has a passive entry system? Does it have the touch unlock handles? And does it have keyless start? thx
This car was way ahead of its time.
Damn look at this car... Almost 10 years old and it look like vw just commercialised it! Definitely getting one when my car reach 250 000km's.
Looks better than a lot of cars on the road today
Happy New Year Kyle! from one of your best subscribers and top viewers
I love how the song that comes on first is one of my favorites
This is one handsome car. The trunk hinges are my favorite simply because they are so beautiful... Don't judge me.
This car is criminally underrated
This car was ahead of its time.
Ultimately the best car on this earth!
Really liked this car, I was out in the UK the other week and my car for the week was this and it was awesome.
Hey Kyle, how come they don't sell the Phaeton in the USA? My old man wants to buy a new full size volkswagen sedan, but all they have is the CC.
Do all cars in America have to have that continuous chime when the door is open when the engine is running?
I have been putting work/interest as an enthusiast with cars since 7, and Audi is my #1 car, in my opinion most solid engineered German, been doing amazing, stepped up their game since around 2007 +, but for the MSRP that this Phaeton carried, why I would not buy this ? and what is my (personal) reason? this is a Flagship luxury full size Sedan that is just simply outstanding, now I do not know about the maintenance and parts for this vehicle my guess it will cost less than a full on Audi A8L or etc, but still as much as the higher model A6 with the V8 perhaps which I can't guarantee, I might be wrong. BUT what I am saying is it cost more to purchase than your average Audi. With maintaining for similar prices, why not just go for the Audi, I'm beyond humble and do not, at all show-off but I have to mention why pay for a 100 Large for a vehicle along with the price up keep to own, when people, & trust me the average majority will see it maybe as a 40K affordable/luxury German Sedan for the middle class joe, for example, I wouldn't want to spend around $100,000 Dollars on a car and have it mistaken for a 40,000$ passat, give or take, more or less.
This video made me buy my own Phaeton :)
Hey, do you know if parts for these phaeton's cost much? was looking to get one but wasn't sure of the cost of care.
What a fantastic car! Thank you for doing this review.
i get to drive this all the time and i love this car.. very luxurious feel and i like the Bentley instruments in there... puts the power down too
Happy New Year first kyle! in 2011 u will get a very nice collection of cars,it's a very nice Volkswagen by the way, keep going!!
