The Phaeton is one of those cars that looks completely normal to most people, but to a car person will make them stop whatever they're doing and just stare in awe.
I'm not a Volkswagen fan by any means, but this truly is one of the most impressive cars I've seen, especially with the kind of technology it's got. Vent controls like that may seem like over kill, but the idea and technology behind the entire car is just amazing.
A shame the American public didn't take enough interest in this car. It was so sophisticated in many ways. The only thing they did wrong was not borrow Audi A8's space frame for the chassis. But this car is essentially the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.
If you include ALL the VW Motor Group brands you COULD argue that (VW, AUDI, PORSCHE, BENTLEY, BUGATTI, LAMBORGHINI, SEAT and SKODA). But that's not a fair argument because all the major ones are very independent. Is VW the best in the world as a stand alone company? No. NOPE. And NOPE AGAIN.
Okay I have to post another comment. After watching the entire video I am dumb founded by how innovative this car is, and it was made seven years ago! Thank you so much Kyle for this awesome find!
Me too, and I have a 2015 VW Passat which is very nice, but now I would like to look into purchasing one of these. I wonder how many are floating around today?
This car was light years ahead of its time..... Only true car enthusiasts can pick out a Phaeton on the road and appreciate the amazing engineering put into it. I saw a Phaeton just yesterday but I couldn't get close enough to see if it was a W12...
Navid Ettehadi Indeed, I was at a car show last week, and I noticed that many of the features this 11 year old car has, are only now becoming available as (often overpriced) options on mid size models.
let me be honest: people around the world (specially Americans) were stupid to prefer Mercedes-Benz s600 to this masterpiece just because of the brand's name. it's a car that remains modern, feels modern and looks modern even after 20 years. but when you look at a 2004 Mercedes-Benz s class you say: this is an old Mercedes. it was the last masterpiece of ferdinand piech before retirement. he is ferdinand porsche's grandson.
Wow this is the first time I've ever seen the Phaeton. I usually go for name brand cars like Mercedes and BMW and this honestly surpasses both the S Class and 7-Series of its same year. This is Bentley-type luxury and I love the unique detail on ever inch of this car. I'd get myself a W12 of these if I would find a good one around me but sadly they are extremely rare, even the base V8 models are hard to come by. After all.... I think this was 20 grand more than an S and a 7 at the time so that may been the reason there are so little because people would spend 20 grand less and get a name brand s class recognizable on the road. But for me with that same mentality, I really like this car
VW actually owns Bentley, so the electronics and the W12 engines are actually VW engineering, let's not forget that those are the same guys who engineered the bugatti veyron, unfortunately people tend to hate on VW because of the american spec cars they get in the USA, they don't know that the European versions are a completely different experience.
A fail here in the states for "luxury car" market because it said VW on it but I've always had a thing about liking those possibly because it looks simalar to the passat at the time and would be a good sleeper if it didn't say W12 on it the passat driver would be confused when it zoomed away; I'll love that car forever.
I didn't pay attention to the year when I clicked on the video I just saw a pretty Volkswagen, and when you said 2004 I thought "no way, it looks at minimum of 2009." This is a car I could see myself driving. Thank you Kyle. Happy New Year
all VWs of the same generation have the same key, it works well and at least you don't need a specific part for every single model, think about it it's for our own benefit.
Audi a8's from that generation have the same key as well. And as someone else said its a greatly designed key. My dad owned an a8 from that generation and I love the key.

hell yes!!!!! just made my day kyle, wanted to see you make a video on this car in this configuration for SO LONG!!!! awesome man, love you long time!!!
KirillVL Unfortunately, they will. But anyone who has a 25k budget can get one of these instead (still great value) and use the leftover money to keep it running for a few years.
Roger That I was looking at one with a W12 several years ago, so yeah maybe they are cheaper. $5,000 for a w12 Phaeton means that the car probably needs some major work done.
Roger That Here, you can get a 3.0 TDI with 300k kilometres (mind you, this is a very reliable car) for five grand. But the W12 is a bit more expensive than that.
This car was waaaaaaay ahead of its time!!!! The outside is pretty ugly, however the inside is beautiful. I can't believe all the features on this 04 VW!!!!

$100k? Only thing nicer than the 04 Audi A6 Quattro is the color LCD. I wouldn't pay $100k for it, you can get a new Audi A8L for that price, much nicer and more reliable.
Enormous...amazing ...because its easy and few expensive(quality/price ratio) to drive a phaeton w12 for all days using. .. and if you can found it because its rarely... for a fraction of Bentley price you have this car in perfect condition...
Good and terrible car at the same time. The W12 engine and attention to detail are amazing, but at $100,000 you're not paying for the car, you're paying for the logo. The rich don't want to drop their money to be seen in a Volkswagen. If this had a Mercedes or even Bentley nameplate instead, this car would have sold like hotcakes. Arguably the best car in the world when it came out in 2003 that nobody wanted.
Philip Jackson Until you have to fix it, remember its still a $100,000 car with $100,000 car problems. So repairing this beast will eat your wallet to pieces if you're the average Joe.

The price for a Phaeton is in the class nearly to Mercedes/Audi' prices. Many want to have the grat image, a VW has lower image than Mercedes/Audi. Though the Phaeton is more exclusive than S-Class/A8, considering he stands on Bentley's Platform and is made in a manufactury. He offers luxury and exclusivity as wanted in the highclass.

Mr. Myrrh E. Povich-Chung lol you don't know the full story I guess, the lose around 28k on every phaeton they sell, R&D costs them 1billion dollar and there goal was to sell at least 20k of them a year. Amazing car though
Spitfire599 obviously you don't know about cars... VW has been having that way far back from "04s" Mercedes and Jaguar was an example ... Learn more kid
+escobar 370gt Okay, you're obviously a thick-headed moron who has no idea what I'm talking about. I know that VW and all those cars have been doing that since the '70s. What I mean is that the 2004 Phaeton had leather material around the cupholder area, where as the '05 and '06 had wood. Think before you open your god damn mouth.
once you need to maintain it . it will properly bankrupt you . just like Audi , BMW , and Mercedes Benz . nice look advance auto mobile that will kill your wallet if you don't have enough money on you . unfortunately i love it !!!
Al B Do you know what other problems the car potentially has? Many models I've seen for sale have a millage of over 200.000 KM and some even go up to 500/600K. This is usually a sign that this is a dependable car (because worn down, high millage cars are usually shipped to eastern Europe where they don't take vehicle quality checks as seriously). I'm considering a 2003 4.2 V8 Highline model with 128.500 KM on it at 12.000 euro's (16.000 dollars).
The Phaeton was actually positioned to be above the A8 in terms of luxury. The Phaeton shared its chassis with the Flying Spur and was more refined than the A8, the A8 was positioned to be the sportier luxury sedan like a 7 Series.
The most over-engineered car possibly ever, but what a great car! I think a V8 Phaeton with limited frills and fancies would do me just fine though, this W12 beast is a little imposing! People are always saying that they don't understand why VW made this car when they have the Audi A8, but the A8 has always been about relatively light and sporty luxury whereas this car is all about pushing the engineering limits, so I agree that it deserves a place in the world.
The Phaeton is one of those cars that looks completely normal to most people, but to a car person will make them stop whatever they're doing and just stare in awe.
yeah, excellent car. too bad most idiots disregard them outright. the chinese realise its value. Now they get it as phideon.
This is the kind of car that gives Mercedes, BMW, and Jaguar a run for there money, and shows them what a luxury car should be.
Charles Earle it looks so boring tho
Understated and boring is exactly what some prefer. But clearly, it did not sell as well as VW had hoped in the North American market.
Gixxeff 750 Compared to what exactly?
The Phaeton is one of the most under-rated vehicles in the automotive world! I always thought that this was a wonderful car.
Tony Wise youre right, if audi doesn't have A8, phaeton will be much more popular.

Mr. Myrrh E. Povich-Chung lol you don't know the full story I guess, the lose around 28k on every phaeton they sell, R&D costs them 1billion dollar and there goal was to sell at least 20k of them a year. Amazing car though
Bentley continental is a 2dr Pheaton technically.....engine is exactly the same!
avivmaks lk
jesus fucking christ I said it has the same engine and your talking about turbochargers!
Sentient Organic Lifeform the audi A8 replaced this basically.
i absolutely love that exhaust set up
This isn't an '04. '04s didn't have the wood around the center console cup holders like this one does.
some Mercedes and Jaguars have been doing that since 70s... learn more about cars kid (:
+escobar 370gt What the heck are you even talking about? I was talking about the VW, not some old Merc.
Spitfire599 didn't ready you message but cool story kid learn more about cars (:
This car is criminally underrated
once you need to maintain it . it will properly bankrupt you . just like Audi , BMW , and Mercedes Benz . nice look advance auto mobile that will kill your wallet if you don't have enough money on you . unfortunately i love it !!!
you just tell them it's a passat XD
+abd bach true. Lol
+abd bach honestly it might even work.
Damn look at this car... Almost 10 years old and it look like vw just commercialised it! Definitely getting one when my car reach 250 000km's.
CLOSE THE DOOR!
Awesome car
Kyle , top shelf of the Volkswagen and you know
I Like IT.
no doubt it a beautiful car, unfortunately its the most problematic VW ever made!!
And has one of the worst depreciation!
FuZionSniperzZ
Uhhhh no? saw one for sale in BC Canada for $25k, please tell me any other 2004 still worth that?
Lol.. It was a 100k car.. They are a mechanical nightmare especially the 12 cylinder version
Nathan S They even mentioned it being one of the worst on auto trader...
This is one handsome car. The trunk hinges are my favorite simply because they are so beautiful... Don't judge me.
poor mans Audi a8 :D
Couldn't be more wrong
The Phaeton was actually positioned to be above the A8 in terms of luxury. The Phaeton shared its chassis with the Flying Spur and was more refined than the A8, the A8 was positioned to be the sportier luxury sedan like a 7 Series.
I like how the wood grain lifts up to reveal the vents when you start the car. I have personally never seen one of these. They're cool.
Happy New Year first kyle! in 2011 u will get a very nice collection of cars,it's a very nice Volkswagen by the way, keep going!!
Love that sog when he turned on the radio: "avenged Seven-fold, Welcome to the family"
This car was way ahead of its time.
The new 2011 model year looks even better. Its the Best looking new Luxury car on sale today.
Happy New Year Kyle! from one of your best subscribers and top viewers
