    for a doom metal pedal board you could just use a big muff (as the pedal board) and tape a tuner on to it

    If listening to a band like Weedeater has taught me anything it's that there is no such thing as too much fuzz. So I think the pedalbard needs at least two or three more fuzz pedals.

    In the 60s/70s/80s, delays and reverb usually drove the front of an amp. Effects loops were usually parallel or non-existent. This is key (rvb/dly>overdrive>amp) if you want an authentic stoner sound that has become pretty uncommon these days. It's perfect for drony, slow riffs, as well as my bloody valentine/ sigur ros style washes. It's an effect that forces you to play a certain way and I love the way it sounds! Love this channel, too! Keep it up! 🤘🤘

    I use distortion, fuzz, reverb, delay.. But, I also use an EQ. I think EQ is way too underrated for getting a sound nice and deep. I actually use two EQ pedals, that way I can get two different settings or double them up.

  • @radishlive
    @radishlive 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So I'm actually really proud of the way i have my amp and pedalboard setup so I wanted to offer my insights into my thought process behind the setup. The pedal chain goes like this Guitar -> Chromatic Tuner Tu-3 BYPASS OUT -> INPUT NS-2 noise suppressor SEND -> Famicomp Fuzz/Compressor -> Input Randall RX120D Send -> MT-2 Metalzone -> Behringer Ultra Chorus -> RETURN NS-2 OUTPUT -> Solidgold Electroman Delay -> EHX Cathedral -> Return Amplifier. My board is powered by an isolated power supply. I have spent many hours tinkering with all the possible combinations I could put this board in and have settled on this as my mainstay. My logic primarly is I want the NS-2 to include the entire pre amp chain inside of it's own loop for noise supression purposes. This allows me to put my time effects outside the suppressor just before the signal goes to the return on the amplifer which serves as the power amp in. My famicomp is my secondary fuzz distortion, the metalzone is my high gain clarity distortion these two dont sound good together so i use one or the other. The famicomp doubles as a compressor and is designed to go at the beginning of the signal for the fuzz effect this allows me to cleanup the overloud parts of my playing and bring up the pitch harmonics and tapping so they are more audible. The ns-2 in spite of the bad rap it gets is instrumental to keeping all these effects clean and my amp from feedbacking. it also serves as my mute pedal. The chromatic tuner is bypassed and is on all the time it cannot mute. The metalzone also gets a bad rap but it is actually a really good high gain distortion. It is designed to go inside of the effects loop of your amp after the preamp section but before the time based effects this is where i feel the pedal really shines as it really gives a full heavy distortion sound. putting this pedal in front of the preamp is awful, wonky, inconsistent and feedbacky and is the reason why many people hate the pedal. Sorry for the long winded comment. Many of my effects are on the cheap side I think my most expensive pedal is either the famicomp or the cathedral. You would be surprised how much mileage you can get out of cheaper common effects pedals.

  • @BatEatsMoth
    @BatEatsMoth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I play bass, and I put my chorus and echo before my dirt pedals. I've noticed that the effects blend together better that way. If I put the echo after distortion, there's too much distinction; the distortion sounds too separate from the echo, and the echo is dynamic-independent (i.e. slapping back all the time). If I put the echo before distortion, they blend together better and the echo becomes dynamic-dependent, so I can get a general reverb sound most of the time and trigger the slapback where it has the most effect.
    For example, sliding my fingers on the strings triggers it, or palm muting in the right places. You can hear what I'm talking about in this song: th-cam.com/video/QX0sJ2B7OMU/w-d-xo.html
    You don't hear the slapback anywhere else except the slides. It also colors the distortion in an interesting way that I wouldn't get putting the echo after distortion.
    Pete Thorn did a video about the difference pedal order makes: th-cam.com/video/sTIHC86sDZo/w-d-xo.html
    He uses Van Halen as his example. I used to wonder the same thing about EVH's sound; how he could go from a general reverb sound to a slapback sound just from a riff change.
    I also put my chorus before my echo; I haven't tried echo before chorus yet because I'm happy with the way it sounds now, but I just might try switching them.

    I’ve got an Orange or15 with an EQD Black Ash fuzz, EQD Speaker Cranker, a RAT clone built by my friend Eric from Strange Effects, and Dunable’s Complete Distorter all running into the front. I’ve got the amp’s gain at roughly 10 o’clock. In the effects loop I’ve got OBNE Dweller, EHX Memory Man w/ Hazarai, Source Audio Ventris, and OBNE Darkstar. The sonic palette is great.

    Latest setup for gigs = guitar>overdrive boss sd1> input of amp1 Peavey deuce vt>preamp out> 7 band eq boss ge7> stereo effect Mimiq Doubler>> dry amp1 return/effect amp2 return. Both amps are Peavey Deuce VT converted to head units.
    At home the setup changes by the hour. I'm always fucking with shit. Sometimes I feel less is more while other times more is more. Great video. I've been playing with stacking overdrives and boost into distortion pedals. You definitely have me some clues as to why my fuzz pedals sound squished to me. I'll have to play around some more.

    I have 2 reverbs on my board. One set to a short setting and one set to medium. Give a really ethereal space to cleans, but when it's dirty it makes almost like an old microphonic sound but is under control.

  • @k1ll8oi62

    Also, when all my stuff is set up, I have my guitar ran through an old peavy 12 channel mixer, with a 15inch peavy stage monitor, an Acai (?) 10inch speaker with a horn, and my little crate 125watt bass combo amp. At one point I had my two 12inch subs from my car hooked up as well. I called it my "poor man's rig."
    Used a boss ME-6 multi guitar effects pedalboard. Didn't sound the best, but it was very wide and loud.

    The huge reason to put your tuner after your drive section is if you use Boss tuners - like so many - is that it’s always buffered, even when bypassed. Lots of fuzz pedals don’t do so well with it in front.

    This is an awesome look at setting up a board for Doom, Sludge, and Drone style metal. For my band, this is my setup: Walrus Audio Missner overdrive, into a Fuzzrocious Demon, into Big Muff Triangle, those go into the front of the amp, then in the effects loop it goes Boss Space Echo, then into a Behringer Reverb, then at the very end i have an EQ pedal for controlling volumes when needed. Funny enough, one of my favorite settings is having the overdrive, Demon, and Big Muff all on at the same time XD It's one hell of a nasty tone. Stacking is fun hehe

My band covers alot of different musical genres- folk rock, Psychedelic, blues, funkier stuff, and of course some stoner rock for good measure. The way I have it set up right now is: Guitar>Wah>Tuner>Envelope Filter>Analog Octave Up> ABY box (This where things get weird/difficult) To Fender: Stomp Under Foot Rams Head>EQD Hoof>JHS Calhoun>Coppersound Gravity Bomb>Phaser>Univibe>Echo>Reverb/Tremolo. To Orange: Orange Two Stroke Boost/EQ>Way Huge Aqua Puss

    Just started my first pedalboard, and it is of the Doomiest variety.
    It's pretty simplistic so far, but I've been playing around with these pedals, rearranging the order here and there:
    EHX Russian Big Muff Pi
    EHX Pitch Fork
    Fender Pugilist Distortion (not the biggest fan of it, but the bass boost switch definitely comes in handy...we'll see)
    Gamechanger Audio Plasma Pedal (High Voltage Distortion Unit) and that thing is deadly, I absolutely love it.
    Deciding on the right reverb/delay, but most important in my planning now is finding the right Octave pedal.

    Simple is sometimes better. If I was still gigging this board would cover the basics for me. At home now just messing around my board is almost out of hand! Pedals in order, Wah, Fuzz (diy kit Sriracha Fuzz), DOD Fx 55B as overdrive, Boss DS-1 as Distortion, Tuner, Danelectro Tremolo and Chorus, Ibanez flanger, Delay 1 set as slap back, delay 2 long delay. Both delay pedals are DIY kits. Once in awhile I'll throw on my Danelectro Free Speech talk box. Great video! Cheers!

    I’ve simplified my setup. I used to use a modeler with probably a dozen sounds and it was good....not great though. I’ve realized that when you make an absolutely killer sound with a modeler it sounds great in isolation but with a band it all disappears. So, I picked up an Orange MicroDark. While it isn’t a sound I would have chosen before I realized it’s a sound which has the frequencies needed to cut thru bass and drums. It’s sound doesn’t get buried in the mix-it adds the mids that are so important for guitar.
    I use a boost (Behringer SF300 in the boost mode-best deal on a great boost plus you get fuzz as well) into a noise gate into the MD fully cranked and it’s amazing.
    Could you do a pickup shoot out sometime? I’ve mentioned it before but a huge part of my sound is my pickups-Gibson Tony Iommi (He’s your friend) pickups. They sound better than anything else I’ve ever heard. You should really hunt some down and put them in your Doomcaster. If you don’t like them I’ll gladly buy them from you.
    But that’s not going to happen. I mean, it’s Tony Iommi’s signature set-he’d never steer you wrong.

    Hello from Skellefteå! I like the fact that you instruct people to dial in their clean sound and build on it from there. I use a modified HiFi amp (an old Carver 275) as my amp as it’s a crystal clean Class A amp with ridiculously low THD (in part due to the fact it’s using 12AU7’s in the front end). This is a stereo amp so one can have all kinds of fun with it when using an ABY box (sadly it’s not possible to run the amp channels out of phase with each other as the share the mains but perhaps there’s a pedal that can do that for some extreme stereo guitar fun). Anyway, I truly believe in using the cleanest amp possible with dirt pedals. I also use 12AU7’s in V1 and V2 positions of my old Plexi Super Lead if and when using it for dirt, doom and sludge. I also use a pedal switcher and place a EQ pedal in front of each fuzz or distortion pedal as the Carver doesn’t have any tone shaping control as it was meant to be used with a HiFi EQ. When using my pedal board with my Plexi, I set Presence to 0, Bass to 10, Middle to 0, Treble to 6. I plug my guitars into the bottom input of the High Treble channel and the jump the two channels’ top inputs together. I typically use a Mesa OS bottom cab and an early 80’s Marshall JCM800 1960B cab loaded with G12-65’s; the combo is pretty monstrous although I would like to add a 15” speaker to the setup but I digress.

    Interesting to see the tuner and octaver placed after the dirt pedals. Will try that. What about a compressor? Still before the dirt? Also, I use a Way Huge Saucy Box HC (hard clipping) overdrive as a boost but have been placing it after the fuzz/distortion. Maybe an actual dedicated boost pedal is better before all the dirt?
    Signal chain: Boss TU-2, MXR Dyna Comp (JHS Dyna Ross mod), TC Electronic Sub n Up, Hovercraft Ionostrofear fuzz, Mooer Black Secret (rat; no longer working), Way Huge Saucy Box HC, Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret mkIII, input

    Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh Supreme is the fuzz for me. It has tone controls to keep the highs intact and several clipping semiconductor options for infinite sound tweaks. It is also clean and defined enough to work with synths. Big muffs were the standard there for a while and everything was compared to those which is what I did. The pedal choices between now and even the early 2000's has exploded and newest developments hold me back from finishing my pedal setup..still looking for an insane reverb. The newest have tails, shimmers, modulations, etc integrated along with the reverbs. I'm not a pedal freak and have chosen carefully over the years: BAT pharaoh supreme, Boss HM-2, fulltone deja-vibe, malekko 616 delay, ehx grand canyon delay is the current pedal chain fwiw. ( I have an original crybaby and a Mel9 that get added when I need them.) haha, you mention Swedish death metal=HM-2 turned all the way up. I use it mostly for weird tonal control with dist low BUT I can buzzsaw if I want to. Nothing remotely sounds like the HM-2 besides clones of course

    Love this video!! My board is a bit different comparative to standard boards for things like doom and sludge - I'm using the Boss MS-3 and 2 different fuzzes (DOD Carcosa and DeviEver Hyperion) and some tricks in the MS-3 with both a boost and Drive setting, like you mention to give some clarity, as well as a BE-OD from Friedman for some super high gain stuff. I'm a huge fan of also using some phase and reverb/delay. I mostly use some tricks to get between different sounds super fast and snappy so I can get some nice textures (Like Elders Reflections of a Floating World album)
    Excited to see more!!!

    Killer video! Thanks so much discussing where best to place a tuner. I think Boss TU-2's and TU-3's have buffers, so as per your very first suggestion, I'll definitely be putting mine last in the chain.
    Did you ever consider making a video discussing the guitars and pickups you originally used when designing your pedals? I for one would be very interested to learn if you tweaked the circuits for PAF, P90, Super Distortions, Single Coils, or whatever. Doom is pretty Humbucker centric, but I think your pedals are fantastic with Single Coils as well.
    Cheers dude!

    I'm confused why you suggest placing the tuner after the dirt pedals. Wouldn't having the tuner up front allow for the same muting functionality, but with a cleaner signal going to the tuner? Is it because the dirt pedals are producing feedback on their own, without any guitar input?

    Very useful and interesting video! I would like to ask if the " tuner/killswitch" method is done in that way in the video just because fuzzes, germanium boosters and distortion don' t like a buffer before them or because in that position the signal shutdown is more effective! I' ve got a quite odd guitar rig( wah and analog delay in front of the crunchy amp) and i was asking myself in which placement the tuner will do that better, thank you!

    • @FuzzlordEffects
      @FuzzlordEffects  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and yes. After the fuzz to keep the buffer out of the way. Also, after the fuzzes and dirt for a true mute. Sometimes when you have a few high gain pedals on, they will still be making amp feedback when you hit the tuner as a mute (;
      Thank you for watching,
