Found the first sg style guitar I’ve ever enjoyed playing, today. Fell in love with it and now buying it. I’ve always been a thrash and groove metal guy and now really getting into doom. I love this channel. There’s some fuzz lord pedals I definitely would like to buy at some point. Great content. \m/
I like both Les Pauls and SGs. Spent most of my time playing an SG so that feels like home, the slightly darker tones and the higher fret access definitely influenced my play style. But the Les Pauls have a bit more snap and definition and a great classic look and feel. Can’t go wrong with either one! Love the content Jason, keep it up! Watching from Vancouver, WA 👍🌲
wanted to comment something like this but no point commenting the same thing again. love my sg but so hard not to say the les paul... btw, i have a "vintage" brand sg, made in china, but such fantastic quality feel to it... and plays nice as well. the great thing about it is it has a slightly offset body, like an esp viper, which looks a little worse but while playing you can barely tell because of the way the guitar is slanted on your body, but totally fixes any neck-dive issue (especially when you have a little wider strap, like a bass strap. at the same time, it has the 2-volume 2-tone setup, unlike esps. so to me, best of both worlds.
Here from Australia Becoming a massive SG fan. Players like Jus, Buzzo and Iommi have really gotten me into SG's for the Doom aspect but seriously adore what versatility you can get out of them in general. Everyone from Zappa, Santana, Robby Krieger, Chino Moreno and Angus Young... really digging the idea of getting one as of late just from the array of sounds you get from that lineup of musicians using them right there! Currently got an LTD Sparrowhawk and loving, both, the precision and dissonance that thing can provide when trying to attain either of those sorts of tones but thinking something with a smoother and wider "vocabulary" if that makes sense... and I'm vibing the SG. Also open to anyone who may have some helpful tips for me too. Cheers! PS: Loving the channel's content. Really helping me out in my search!
Hei. I'm from Norway. I love SG's. I fell in love with SG's when I was like 13-14 years old. My wife bought me my first Gibson SG Special on my 30th birthday. I'm 36 now and the guitar is starting to show a lot of wear.. Love it....
Epiphone SG was my second guitar. Loved it. Neck diving was rarely a issue. Easy to play 30 minute sets with a few jumps in the air and not skipping a beat. Real problem, it was too sweet and stolen out of my studio. That's when I found "the Paul" by Gibson. Lighter weight with same heavy mahogany sound of a Les Paul. Lighter on the wallet too. The Con: that damn pickup switch above the strings. I would use it as a killswitch between songs but most of the time it was accidentally hit while playing live. Not a good spot for aggressive players. Great Doom guitar not typically talked about: Jazzmaster HH. Larger neck scale, beefy Alder body, switch is out of my strum path, and you don't have to buy a dozen solo G strings.
I have one. Its pretty awesome sounding - very dark and saturated with sparkly highs because of the doubled strings. However! It weighs a ton. Its solid mahogany, thick and large, and and makes a Les Paul seem light by comparison.
While I favor my 7-string violin, I do have an AXL 1216 Badwater Crackle Blue with an SD Screamin' Demon in the bridge. It's an all mahogany (except for the fretboard), Les Paul style, beast. I think it's kind of a shame they don't make them anymore. They were a real nice bang for your buck. I keep it tuned in Drop-B with either Ernie Ball Cobalts or D'Addario NYXLs for tonal clarity. I do eventually plan on putting a Lollar Single Coil for Humbucker in the neck. It's a P-90 style pickup with noise cancelling reverse polarity coils. They sound beautiful. I highly recommend you check them out.
Oh, I should also mention that the issues you have with the Gibson Les Paul's, Jackson has fixed with their LP style guitars and have graphite reenforcement rods in the neck. The ESP Eclipses are really awesome too and have carbon fiber rods in the neck but, don't have the tight headstock shape of the Jacksons.
I used to play a les paul. And I really loved it. But the short scale length did start to become a problem in my C-standard tuning. I personally hate the look of SG's, but playing a couple I found I really like the feel of those. But now I found a 1979 ibanez st50. Which is an HH guitar with a mahogany body and a set neck. And best of all: 25 and 1/2 scale length 😁! As for my favourite player. In mastodon Brent used a lot of SG's and Bill used a lot of les pauls and I love their music. I'm watching from Belgium and have really been digging your channel! Keep it up.
Lower tunings sure can be tricky on LP scale length. I like to play in B oon my Tele and can never get LP scale below C without issues. Cheers Pieter and thanks for watching!
A great solution to the G string SG thing is to take the string backwards through the tailpiece, and wrap it overtop the bridge. Stops that whole issue of tuning stability. A trick I learned from a number of pros. I’m from West Virginia btw. Love your channel! So much valuable info to pass on to younger guitarist, and even teach a thing or two to some vets. I learn new things everyday. I love your pedals. Wanted to purchase one, but sadly they are sold out. Love that ProCo Rat Clone!!! Awesome pedal, as well as the FU-2! I play an SG, and you wouldn’t believe how good it is if I told you the brand. Do you remember when Gibson put out the Maestro SG’s. I got one for ten dollars. Dude I swear after modding a couple things that guitar is sick! I’ve had legit Gibson SG’s before that didn’t sound as filthy as one of those do. It’s seriously a sleeper of a budget guitar. Yea it sounds crazy! Just check one out sometime. They kinda have a cult fan base now. Some are selling for well over a 100$-200$ on reverb. Excellent modding platform with correct Gibson style headstock. The LP junior version is infamous now as well.
Hi, I’m from St. Paul MN, I used to be a big Les Paul but a few years back I bought my first SG and fell in love. Another SG player I love is Pepper Keenan from COC though not specifically doom metal Pepper’s tone is flawless
Les Paul: Kyle Shutt of The Sword SG: Dave Majury of Slomatics Note: I know that SG neck problem, dropped mine on an amp and cracked the neck joint... Managed to reattach it but never sounded the same again. SG is still my favorite style of guitar but I'm playing a Les Paul at the moment.
I've always been a Les Paul guy, looking forward to buying an SG in the near future, where I can build an unbiased opinion. Great video! Learned some more about the SG and I still want one! So... good job!! Cheers and much love from Canada!
Heya Jason, Dale from Treebender, outta Medford, OR here. I play a 61 SG reissue, and will never look back. I’ve always loved the shape, access to higher frets and weight if the SGs. Just gotta say, I appreciate this video, and all the videos you do. Keep up the good work friend. Iommic life complete.
I miss my SG i am a recovering heroin addict who is trying to save for another SG not easy in CA economy but i regret so fuckn much getting rid of my marshalls, jacksons, and SG with a host of effect pedals for measly amounts of dough some of my biggest regrets as 4 years sober but not much closer on being able to afford those again. I appreciate your channel showcasing a wide range of different priced gear i might have to downgrade to an epiphone but i was going toss in zombie dusters with a p-90 in the neck in my SG before it was sold years ago in desperation would have been tits. It's a bit daunting trying to rebuild some of my collection i use to have but know in no way am i going back to that lifestyle so i know that the extra money i make goes to other things then my arm now, but its just damn hard to accumulate again, but so glad that there are large networks of used and new gear and a host of DIY stuff out there with a ton of info even on youtube i might just build up my perfect doom guitar from scratch or a kit if i continue to struggle to save up for a new or vintage SG, I'd take a standard in a moment could be the most basic as i switch up humbuckers and pickups frequently anyway with hardware changes. Lately been researching a lot more DIY as i really want to build a custom resin epoxy sg some gnarly lace pickups maybe the dragonauts and a kahler tremelo. Here's a good example of a gnarly resin guitar dude even made a guitar out of concrete now that's some heavy shit lol th-cam.com/video/o8sRAclqoBg/w-d-xo.html do that to a SG and that shit will look satanic.
Happy you are recovering and good job on saving up for a new guitar! Epiphone s have become so nice and can get a used one in case for a really good price. Cheers!!
I've got something that's in-between the both: an Epiphone SC-450 Scroll. It's got a heavy mahogany body, but the accessibility slots of the SG to its 24-fret neck. Two humbuckers. Simple tone, volume control and pickup selector and a coil-split toggle. It sounds heavy and angry and handles heavy strings like a champ.
Saw All Them Witches in Atlanta a few years ago (I'm a south Georgian) and really enjoyed it..also got to see Dinosaur Jr., Ty Segall and the Freedom Band, and Dead Meadow all around that same time so it was a great era in my live music journey 👽🤘
I have 2 sgs a 50s tribute with p90s tuned to c , and a standard e flat tuning that came with classic 57s but I switched em out for 498t and a 490r . They’re both monsters . Love em
Just bought my first guitar, Epiphone SG Speacial with a sexy walnut finish, I don't know how to play much yet but that doesn't make it any less fun to play
I've got a customized black beauty les paul I use in a sludge band. Tho it's an epiphone and not a gibson, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It feels great in hand and with 3 humbucker slots to customize and a 5 way switch the tone possibilities are endless.
Hej! Watching from Umeå, Sweden. Never owned any Gibsons but my former band mate has a really beautiful sun burst Les Paul that I kind of envy him for. I've seen old videos where Mike from Yob plays a Les Paul, before he got the Monsons he's using now. His tone has always been great!
Great vid. My girlfriend just bought me an LP Standard for my birthday. It's a 2016 Limited Edition Faded Honeyburst Plain Top . It's a beaut. I have an SG too. It's one of the first run of the robots they made. I know people hate the autotune capabilities, but I found a guy selling it for about a few hundred bucks about decade ago and if you ignore the robot parts, it's still a beautiful SG Standard.
Chris from South Bend. Recently went out and treated myself on the relative cheap. Drove to Chicago for Bongzilla, bought some Boris and a Japanese copy of Sabbath live from Asbury park. Then picked up an old Epi SG standard in Cream for 120, then the other day a used Orange Crush 12 practice amp for 50. Primarily a bass player so its still something to try and learn, don't think I'll be riffing on my band's songs but maybe help in the demoing process
Greetings from KC Missouri! Two guitarists that I love and made me love Gibson! First the grandfather of doom, Mr Iommi and his SG and secondly not known as a doom metal player but a genius on the strings, Mr Page with his Les Paul. Funny thing is before I owned a Gibson and truly played them (being left handed is a curse). I loved the Les Paul. With that said, now since i own both I prefer the SG its more user friendly for my style and the sounds are deadlier in my opinion! I mean just listen to the end of your video! When you play that SG mind blown! Great video and I am a new subscriber!
What's up, Mike out of Memphis here. Weekly question wise: I had a 2010 gibson SG faded, but have never had a LP. The SG was awesome, great guitars & the faded series ring out loud like a bell. I sold it & ended up getting a deal on a black 2000 gibson es-335. The 335 is heavy (like LP weight) but I prefer that- it makes it feel substantial. Tone wise, it's very close to a LP & sustains for days. Handles gain crazy good. I do miss the SG though. Good call on the P90. I replaced the humbuckers in the SG with a set of SD Phat Cats. Tried those for a while & then settled on a set of BG Pure90s. Highly recommend BG Pickups.
Got one of those Epiphone SG 400 from Amazon coming this Saturday. Got it with a $90 coupon as well so the total came out to $350 including tax got that info from does it Doom so thank you for that. But stoked to be getting it. I got a pair of 60 2 12 strings that I'm probably going to throw it and I'm stoked. Hello from San Ramon California. And awesome Channel by the way keep it up
Hello, I'm from the San Francisco East Bay. I enjoy your program and presentation style. I own a Epiphone Les Paul Modern and a Epiphone Les Paul Jr. with one P-90. The guitars are tuned to open "G" tuning. I bought these guitars for playing Droning music. I am very happy with these guitars as they have great sustain and tone.
Favourite LP players: Matt Heafy from Trivium (my only guitar is his signature epiphone 7-string LP!), Bill Kelliher and Pete Adams from Baroness (Love his silverburst)
Old video but I still want to answer the question. When I bought my SG in 2012, I went to the store with 600 bucks that I got from my parents for my birthday as advance for Christmas and all the other holidays you get some money. So I went into the store to buy an Epiphone LES PAUL with EMGs. That were my requirements. LP shape and active EMGs. Of course they didn't have the guitar I wanted in stock. I kept looking around and saw the Epiphone SG Custom Prophecy EX with EMG 81 and 85. I thought well I give it a try. I hooked it up to a Marshall halfstack and I was blown away. I immediately liked how the guitar felt in my hands, with a very thin neck, 24 frets and easy access up to the 20th fret! and the EMGs... I loved it! Now this guitar has been my main guitar since then, it can play everything from metalcore, punk, death metal up to classic sabbath, kyuss and stoner, doom what ever. Never regereted getting this guitar. SGs rule!
@@FuzzlordEffects Yeah and I love it, I even did some mods to it over the years. As I wanted a pickup change I just took the EMGs with the electronics out and put in the passive PAF-style pickups with the electronics from one of my other guitars (LP copy) into the SG. It sounded okay but soon I wanted the EMGs back so I bought the EMG 57 for the bridge, which is solderless (to spare me the hassle) and has passive PAF qualities, and left the neck empty ever since. But now I grew tired of the neck slot being empty and I will finally get the EMG 66 for neck to make it complete again haha. This was also one of the last models to be an Epiphone made in Korea. And the build quality is really high.
I'm watchin from São Paulo, Brazil. I really like the way that les paul's look, and that unique sound of them, but when i'm going to play for 2, or 3hrs in a row, I always choose my SG. It feels a lot better on your back, and has that unique "punchy" sound. Here in Brazil we say that SGs have a "cracked" (estralado) sound.
Greetings from SLC. Love my SG. Just got a Gibson sig LP body/neck that I’m going to be slowly piecing together with all my preferred components and electronics. I did the same with my 60’s tribute SG and it turned out great.
It's a mix of everything, pedals do account for a lot of the sound. This pickup set is pretty nice and they have a great clean tone. I can def tell a difference between quality of sound from different sets of pickups.
from Tampa, FL. If I played a Gibson, it would be a modded Les Paul or a weighty PRS. However, I dislike short scale length as someone who always tunes down to D-standard or down/up a half step from D-standard. I think 26 to 26.5 scale length would be ideal, but there aren't many out there. My current favorite metal (death-doom) guitar is the MH-1000 from ESP. The mahogany body combined with high output pickups and an EQ pedal through a Marshall is excellent. Evertune bridge makes me happy too. Lastly, before going to Mayones, my fav. guitarist played a Les Paul: Blakkheim of Katatonia. great sustain.
@@NothingMatterz I know I've owned a half a dozen or more of both tgevP90's snd humbuckers. Ian plays two humbucker models and Guy plays a Park head and a Rickenbacker.
In my opinion the bridge and tailpiece helps the sustain too. You just can't get that same thick sustain with a floyd rose or 2 post tremolo like a strat.
Jon Nödtveidt (R.I.P) from Dissection always comes to mind when speaking of metal and Les Pauls! I play gibsons on B standard and use .68 .14 medium baritone sets. I tried them after finding that Amon Amarth was using it on their explorers, never went back after the first time i tried them! And i tried alot of diferent sets! On my experience flying v gives you all gibson benefits without the les paul and sg tuning issues probably cause string angle is diferent at headstock, no tuning issues here and i beat them hard!! Nice vid subscribed!
@@FuzzlordEffects yes they had to be filed, but i made the experiment first on a cheap guitar with same scale as gibson to see if i liked the strings. It has tension similar to .10 strings on E standard i cheked it out first on string tension pro and i even use those string sets on my ibanez prestige thin neck with no problem.
I have a Tokai Explorer with 10-52 Elixir strings and i can tune it to B standard without changing setup. It's still plenty tight enough for Crowbar and others!
Chiming in from MT, you can play any guitar and make it doom. The guitar I grab for doom now is an early 70’s Austin LP copy. Cheap as chips, did a lot to stabilize the body and make it playable. Tuned to C with cheap P94 pups. I get the sound I want from the SUF Demogorgon!
Tim Sult/Clutch has been rockin Les Pauls and SG’s on stage and in studio for 30 years. Without preference of new, old, vintage, custom shop or off the rack it is what he plays. I have a cool 05’ SG SPECIAL but I don’t play it much. After this vid I am gonna restring 12-56 and set her up and give her another try if I’m not crazy about it still I will put her back in the case to mummify.
I really dig Les Paul's tones more typically. I play an Epiphone Prophecy SG though. It has a Slim D profile neck with 24 fret board and EMG 81-85 array pick ups. With the grover tuners it rarely gets out of tune. Thinking of getting a dreadnaught and a lawler pickup though to see if I can get better lows. I am new to these videos, do you guys have fuzz pedal videos to cover the range of them and functionality?
Greetings from Minneapolis. I haven't played a Les Paul yet, but I've been lusting over a white Epiphone SG that the local guitar shop has. It just feels so comfortable to play and sounds amazing. I will definitely give the Les Paul a shot, though
Les Paul players: Scott from Neurosis and Shep from Weedeater. SG players: Brent from Mastodon and Vincent from Pentagram. Love both guitars, but I’m a Les Paul man. Peace from Atlanta!
Hey Fuzzlord! The first guitar I ever owned was an Epiphone Les Paul in cherry sunburst when I was 15, my buddy from school had an SG and I got to try it, mind was totally blown! Was way lighter and a bit brighter in tone. All in all it was more of my jam than I thought it would be. I went into some sort of existential crisis and started playing hollow bodies and thin ibanez, fender, esp guitars. Fast forward 16 years since I got the les paul. I Sold it for the price I bought it new and have no desire for another one. I find them to be the most beautiful guitars ever. Sadly we never really got along too well. My favorite player from around the time I bought my first guitar was Christopher Johnson from Therion. I realize now that different strokes for different folks is really a thing when it comes to guitars and if something works incredibly well for somebody else, it won't always be the case for you. The best advice I can give is to try out many kinds of guitars. You can play metal on a gretsch & country on a Dean Razorback, whatever works is best. Watching from tokyo japan, love your channel since you got me into building pedals. Keep on creating! Peace & love.
Brisbane, Australia here! And my favourite SG player around the doom/stoner genre would be Brent Hinds. He has a few in his arsenal along with the Flying Vs that look and sound great. My "one that got away" was a SG standard in black with the large pickguard that just played great but I didn't like the pickups and I had another Gibson scale humbucker guitar, so I traded it for a strat which I hated!
Los Angeles. Owned Les Pauls for years but I do own an epi SG junior and now that I straightened out the leaning wrap tail I’m considering rotating it into live duty. I did have to get a leather strap with rough underside to prevent the neck dive.
Hey Jason another awesome video. I'm playing a fender MIM tele at the moment in b standard with a pair of bare knuckle single coils, but i am soon going to be swapping the neck pick up out for my zombie dust doomster (p90). And when it comes to LP vs SG the SG wins hands down everytime in my opinion, SG's and tele's are by far my favourite body shapes. Cheers from bristol uk
@@jimm8594 I'm assuming you are referring to ZD pick ups? If so then yea man willie the guy behind them is a fuckin wizard, e he builds some of the nicest sounding pick ups for fantastic prices.
I was told that a Gibson SG from the early 1980s have thicker/heavier bodies. The input jack on early 1980 SGs is on the side of the body like a Les Paul, which is interesting!
@@CC-8891 from around '84-'91 He specifically played G&L from then on hes added mostly Les Paul's a couple EVH EBs and with in the last year a Explorer and a Flying V

Привет! I'm from Russia. I have neither Les Paul nor SG, unfortunately (I play more versatile Yamaha Pacifica with bumbuckers). I would like to play Les Paul because of Sunn, but I also like to play SG because of Electric Wizard. But in the end I prefer Les Paul, because it looks cooler and makes you feel badass, and this is all that matters!
Hell yeah. I can see how an SG would be perfect for doom/sludge metal. I absolutely love mine and wouldn’t trade it for anything! Cool video by the way
@@FuzzlordEffects I picked up a brand new 2020 standard (cherry) and yea it’s just amazing. The quality of it is perfect and it plays and sounds killer
Hey love the video! I have 3 epiphone les pauls and tho I think the SG shape is killer, it just feels odd in my hands because of the where the neck is situated in the body, it just feels "farther" away to me. Anyway ,cheers from Philly.
I have an Epiphone ‘61 reissue 50th anniversary SG with P-90s and a LP Traditional Pro gold top. I have not had that tuning problem with the G string. Maybe it’s a Gibson thing? But Tony Iommi is why I love SGs and when I was a little kid, Ace from Kiss caught my eye and loved his LPs. Must say I love my SG maybe more, but the LP has the humbuckers and love how they sound.
I got my first Epi-SG Classic with P90s to play stoner/doom. I know it's not as nice as the Gibson counterparts, but I really enjoy it and I like the bite of the P90s, especially with a detuned stoner tone with lots of bass. The hum can be a bit annoying, but I think it kinda adds to the 'wall of sound' type of feel.
Favorite Les Paul player- Matt pike Favorite SG player- pepper Keenan I prefer the Les Paul for the way it hangs on my body!. Greetings from Newfoundland Canada!
Hello from AZ! I haven't held an SG, but I have to agree w/Les Paul saying they don't *look* as good as the Les. I really like heft in most everything I get, so I went with a used epiphone special II LP (switch in the lower position, which is good, but the tone and vol control both pickups) with upgraded electronics off eBay, really pleased with what I got! The two horn look is just a little too "Hot Topic" for my style, but not dissing people who like it! Almost went with one because of Jus.
Great video! I like both guitars. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special in TV Yellow that I play in standard tuning. I have a Schecter S-1 Elite that is my SG stand in. I also have a Ltd Viper that I had a Bigsby installed. I have that damn G string issue on that guitar. I do have a Charvel Desolation DC 2 which is tuned to D Standard. To help with the nut issue, having a luthier install a new bone nut typically fixes the issue. Especially if they angle the slot towards the tuner on the D and G strings. Another thing to keep in mind is both SGs and Les Pauls twnd to have headstock breaks near tte nut as well since there isnt a lot of wood at that location (unless it has a volute or a dart).
Hi man. Commenting from Northern Ireland. I've just got a £100 Vintage (brand) sg to go with my Epiphone LP. Planning on using it for down tuning and to develop better guitar maintenance skills. Grew up in the 80's when it was all garish pointy super strats but I was into the classics. The images of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak LP cover made me love the Les Paul. A deluxe and a custom. Seeing an sg and LP in the one video it's hard not to think of Clapton's work in Cream. Stunning.
I’m from Williamsburg, Virginia. I prefer the les Paul. But I don’t tune lower than d standard on my les Paul because it isn’t worth filing the nut for thicker strings. David Gold from Woods of Ypres plays an SG. His also has the three humbucker configuration.
Brad Lee Stone I’ve put a seven string set and used the lower six strings and it worked okay. But it would go slightly sharp when I fretted a note on the lower strings. I mean slightly but it was enough to throw it out of tune with a second guitar track
Yeah filing the nut is always a scary deal and kinda makes the larger strings a permanent deal. Steve from Does It Doom uses fairly normal gauge strings and seems to make it work great. Cheers and thanks for watching!
My SG used to have 12-52 when i got it from a doom playing friend. It wasnt set up (dunno how he played it) so i filed the nut but only a bit. I think i can go with 10-52s for E standart. It went down to B standart with the 12s. Atm Im using ernie ball 11-54 in drop C cuz of my band and it holds great. Could go to C standart. Depends on your taste and how slack you want your strings to be. I tend to pluck hard so i like to have some tention. I sacrificed this guitar for lower tunings and keep an E standart cheap strat copy for jams with non doom friends :D. Anyways a new nut isnt that expensive so...
Hi from Mt Pleasant, MI. I can’t choose between the two guitars. I’ve had both, and find them both awesome. Anyway, your videos are really cool, and your products sound great.

such a nice feeling!
Here from Australia
Becoming a massive SG fan.
Really helping me out in my search!
they are so versatile!!!!
Hei. I'm from Norway. I love SG's. I fell in love with SG's when I was like 13-14 years old. My wife bought me my first Gibson SG Special on my 30th birthday. I'm 36 now and the guitar is starting to show a lot of wear.. Love it....
Cheers and thanks for watching! That was really nice of her and rad you are wearing it in!
Jason
Epiphone SG was my second guitar. Loved it. Neck diving was rarely a issue. Easy to play 30 minute sets with a few jumps in the air and not skipping a beat. Real problem, it was too sweet and stolen out of my studio. That's when I found "the Paul" by Gibson. Lighter weight with same heavy mahogany sound of a Les Paul. Lighter on the wallet too. The Con: that damn pickup switch above the strings. I would use it as a killswitch between songs but most of the time it was accidentally hit while playing live. Not a good spot for aggressive players.
Great Doom guitar not typically talked about:
Jazzmaster HH. Larger neck scale, beefy Alder body, switch is out of my strum path, and you don't have to buy a dozen solo G strings.
Such a bummer that got stolen! Cheers and thanks for watching man.
The solution for that pickup switch is to loosen the nut, and turn it so it's horizontal.
Favorite Les Paul player: Jimmy Page
Favorite SG player: Tony Iommi
Honorable Mention Les Paul: Marc Bolan
Honorable Mention SG: Jus Oborn
That First Act that Pike plays though 😍😍
I know!!!!! Such a nice guitar
That 9 string beauty 🤘
That was a cool axe but he doesn't use it anymore.

And how could you possibly forget Angus Young with the sg and Jimmy Page on the les Paul

Let's not forget Adam Jones' gorgeous silverburst les pauls
The darker , mud sound produced by a combo of gibson pickups and 22 fret 24 3/4 scale length is what makes it good for doom.
Good point!
SGs are so good!
Les Paul: Kyle Shutt of The Sword
SG: Dave Majury of Slomatics
Note: I know that SG neck problem, dropped mine on an amp and cracked the neck joint... Managed to reattach it but never sounded the same again. SG is still my favorite style of guitar but I'm playing a Les Paul at the moment.
David is my favorite SG player right now. Such a brutal tone and new album is so good!
Cheers and thanks for watching!

The guitarist from Orange Goblin is using Gibson SG. Mat Pike also use a Yamaha SG and some weird Ibanez SGish guitar.
Cheers!
Its a Bob Weir model i believe, the ibanez
I've always been a Les Paul guy, looking forward to buying an SG in the near future, where I can build an unbiased opinion. Great video! Learned some more about the SG and I still want one! So... good job!!
Cheers and much love from Canada!
I hear this Eric Clapton guy plays a Les Paul from the band Eric Clapton
Hahahahahhahahaha best comment ever 😂
Heya Jason,
Dale from Treebender, outta Medford, OR here. I play a 61 SG reissue, and will never look back. I’ve always loved the shape, access to higher frets and weight if the SGs. Just gotta say, I appreciate this video, and all the videos you do. Keep up the good work friend.
Iommic life complete.
Hey Dale!
Nice SG! Thank you for the kind words and will keep them coming weekly as well as the new podcast (Fuzz Life).
Cheers,
Jason
Cheers!!
I use a P90 SG and a Semi Hollow ES style guitar for Doom metal. I like to break the rules
I'll be playing an SG G400 Pro as of Monday. Just ordered one on AMS. Alpine white. Thanks Jason. SG. AK.
That is so badass! Heard those are really nice guitars 💚
@@FuzzlordEffects LOL it's just like yours but not. Dohh.
Those are so nice!
I just got the SG Modern in Blueberry Burst. This thing just scream.
@@fullclipaudio sweet bro congrats.
Fairly new subscriber from Mount Clemens Michigan . I’ve always love my SG more than LPs! Thanks for the great videos
Thanks for watching Davey and gotta love SGs!
What's that guy from Saint Vitus...he plays SG's
Dave Chandler. Nowadays, he plays Schecter flying Vs.
Tim Sult from Clutch / Ben McLeod From All Them Witches vintage sg and lp heaven
Big Bends Nut sauce is great for lubricating your nut and helping the strings stay in tune especially when you bend the G string a lot.
Robby Krieger, the ulltimate SG player.
fck it IOMMI for me
krieger still good on his style
I have 2 sgs a 50s tribute with p90s tuned to c , and a standard e flat tuning that came with classic 57s but I switched em out for 498t and a 490r . They’re both monsters . Love em
Frank Zappa is my SG hero.
Greetings from Argentina!
Cheers Franco!
Love SGs. First guitar I ever owned, and still the most comfortable guitar I've personally played.
Just bought my first guitar, Epiphone SG Speacial with a sexy walnut finish, I don't know how to play much yet but that doesn't make it any less fun to play
That is so badass you got that and great attitude! Have you seen the does it doom channel yet? He does great lessons.
@@FuzzlordEffects No, I'll have to check em out!
Great video \m/ SG is a beast!
thank you!
No preference between LP's and SG's. I own 2 of each. I wanted to get one of each with humbuckers and P-90s because I like the tonal options.
Nice!
I've got a customized black beauty les paul I use in a sludge band. Tho it's an epiphone and not a gibson, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It feels great in hand and with 3 humbucker slots to customize and a 5 way switch the tone possibilities are endless.
Epiphone makes such awesome guitars! Cheers and thanks for watching.
Ah I will have to look those up! That just have been quite a few years ago. So cool you are seeing this all the way in Sweden 😬
@@FuzzlordEffects Obviously he still brings out the LP occasionally. Here's a vid from 2019! th-cam.com/video/cjq1p5fagso/w-d-xo.html
Great vid. My girlfriend just bought me an LP Standard for my birthday. It's a 2016 Limited Edition Faded Honeyburst Plain Top
. It's a beaut.
I have an SG too. It's one of the first run of the robots they made. I know people hate the autotune capabilities, but I found a guy selling it for about a few hundred bucks about decade ago and if you ignore the robot parts, it's still a beautiful SG Standard.
Brent Hinds of Mastodon, plays a SG but I don’t know what kind of SG
Cheers!
Thanks so much for watching and sharing! Cheers!
KCMO represent 9 months later lol
I don't have either, but I do have an early 80s Hondo II LP "homage". It's one of the few that came out just right. I love it.
Definitely got persuaded into getting an SG because of Zappa.
Badass
Hey Mike! Nice guitar! I really like havingn the P90 in the neck, this one is a Lundgren.
Cheers,
Jason
Got one of those Epiphone SG 400 from Amazon coming this Saturday. Got it with a $90 coupon as well so the total came out to $350 including tax got that info from does it Doom so thank you for that. But stoked to be getting it. I got a pair of 60 2 12 strings that I'm probably going to throw it and I'm stoked. Hello from San Ramon California. And awesome Channel by the way keep it up
That’s so awesome you grabbed one! They look so nice
I picked one up about a year maybe a year-and-a-half ago I love my pro 400
Hello, I'm from the San Francisco East Bay. I enjoy your program and presentation style.
I own a Epiphone Les Paul Modern and a Epiphone Les Paul Jr. with one P-90. The guitars are tuned to open "G" tuning. I bought these guitars for playing Droning music. I am very happy with these guitars as they have great sustain and tone.
Favourite LP players: Matt Heafy from Trivium (my only guitar is his signature epiphone 7-string LP!), Bill Kelliher and Pete Adams from Baroness (Love his silverburst)
That’s rad!
SGs rule!
That is an awesome story and so cool you still have that guitar!
Thank you for watching!!!!
Greetings from SLC. Love my SG. Just got a Gibson sig LP body/neck that I’m going to be slowly piecing together with all my preferred components and electronics. I did the same with my 60’s tribute SG and it turned out great.
Have you experimented with pickups in your LP and SG? What pickup specs (magnet type and outpt) would you consider more suitable for Doom and Stoner?
LP has a set of Lundgren pickups from Sweden. One is a p90 style and the other like a super distortion.
@@FuzzlordEffects thanx for the reply. I suspect you rely more on the amp and the pedals than the pickups themselves for the overall sound, right?
It's a mix of everything, pedals do account for a lot of the sound. This pickup set is pretty nice and they have a great clean tone. I can def tell a difference between quality of sound from different sets of pickups.
@@FuzzlordEffects what’s in the SG?
from Tampa, FL.
Ian MacKaye: FUGAZI: plays an SG..
Pretty sure he just plugs in direct with no pedals.
@@dreamwave_collective with the P90 pickups this guitar gets really loud and jangly. Rocking sounds, no need for distortion pedals.
That sounds like a great setup! Did you have to get the nut slots filed? Cheers and thanks for watching.
Jason
@@FuzzlordEffects yes they had to be filed, but i made the experiment first on a cheap guitar with same scale as gibson to see if i liked the strings. It has tension similar to .10 strings on E standard i cheked it out first on string tension pro and i even use those string sets on my ibanez prestige thin neck with no problem.
I have a Tokai Explorer with 10-52 Elixir strings and i can tune it to B standard without changing setup. It's still plenty tight enough for Crowbar and others!
Scott Kelly of Neurosis used Les Paul’s quite a bit. I don’t know what one specifically but from live clips I can definitely see it’s a Les Paul
The point is to talk about guitars popular in the genre. Talking about an aluminum neck guitar next time. Cheers!
Garry Jennings from the band Cathedral plays SG
Gaz is awesome!
Tuning stability issues can be easily fixed with a String Butler. Check them out.
Maybe I can do a video on one soon! Cheers and thanks for watching

Don't forget Victor Griffin!
Very cool first guitar! Can understand how a LP doesn’t always work well for everyone’s playing, but SGs just feel awesome.
He is such a badass! Thanks for watching Tom!
Los Angeles. Owned Les Pauls for years but I do own an epi SG junior and now that I straightened out the leaning wrap tail I’m considering rotating it into live duty. I did have to get a leather strap with rough underside to prevent the neck dive.
Nice!

Totally understand what you are saying! Cheers and thanks for watching
A string butler is a good fix for the extreme angle of the D & G strings coming from the nut to the tuning pegs.
I will have to grab one!
From Québec, Canada: SG all the way!
Cheers!
I love both guitars. One downside of the Les Paul is the infamous LP Burn you get on your picking wrist. Great vid dude!
Ah good point! Cheers Andy
i love my 24 fret hardtail ibanez super strat. thing dooms like its running out of style
I play a les Paul because of Matt pike and I play an sg because of Tim sult of clutch
Right on! Thanks for watching!
Love both , clutch puts on a good show
@@johnymartin5411 they sure do
Stunning.
Sounds like you have always had good taste! Cheers and thank you for watching!
Only a few models (cheaper SG's, G400's, a few others to my knowledge) of Gibsons have scarf joints
Thanks! I was mistaken and put a little correction note in description.
@@FuzzlordEffects You are awesome and you have an excellent channel brother. Thanks for the great content!
I’m from Williamsburg, Virginia. I prefer the les Paul. But I don’t tune lower than d standard on my les Paul because it isn’t worth filing the nut for thicker strings. David Gold from Woods of Ypres plays an SG. His also has the three humbucker configuration.
I put 12-54 gauge Dunlops on a SG , didn't really need to file the nut ✌
Brad Lee Stone I’ve put a seven string set and used the lower six strings and it worked okay. But it would go slightly sharp when I fretted a note on the lower strings. I mean slightly but it was enough to throw it out of tune with a second guitar track
@@Walmartshoez that's good to know thanks , so , I'm not going to increase my string gauge because I don't want to file the nut either 😉
Cheers Jonny and thank you!
Jason
I'm from Michigan, USA. I use an Epiphone SG. I never used to like SGs, I didn't see the appeal. Now that I own one, I love this guitar!
electric wizard is the best without a doubt
edit: in my opinion
Nope
Best prpduction? Maybe yeah but these tunes 25min ar the vert same riff, without nothing else in between bothers me a lot
Hi Jason, cool channel from the maker itself. Greetings from Argentina!
Thank you Nicolas!
i love SGs. i hate les pauls. it’s a weight thing, im a sissy 😂
my dad has a really early 70’s sg and it sounds great!
They are so comfortable (:
Atlanta, GA, USA - I’m an SG guy for sure. My first guitar was an Epiphone 1966 G400 as I was obsessed with Mikko Lindström from HIM. I’m now a dozen deep🤦🏻♂️it’s a legit problem.
Hahahahaha that’s badass!!! Dozen sounds like the right number
