    Both beautiful rifles. Hunting in the open, I think you made the right choice with the longer barrel. Wishing you all the success with your hunt.

    The M-95 with the 28 inch barrel has the best balance of all the 95s in my opinion. The pistol grip stock and shotgun but have got to make for more comfortable shooting. I find the Cresent but uncomfortable in calibers larger than 30-30. Both are wonderful rifles! Thanks for the video!

    I should think all the deer would be trying their best to get shot with such a classic rifle and cartridge.😁 Hope you get a big buck with your outstanding rifle!

    Interesting choice for hunting. I was led to believe the 30-40 Krag was an anemic cartridge as seen in the Spanish American War and the reason the military went to the 30-06. Perhaps the reason is the difference in performance on humans vs animals? What’s your take on it Mark? Will you fix/change the receiver sight on the carbine? Fun video! Thanks.

    • @thecinnabar8442
      @thecinnabar8442  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not the first time I've heard this comment about the 30-40 Krag being "anemic", but have never understood it. The ballistics of the 30-40 Krag fall right in between the two most popular deer cartridges of the 20th century (30-30 & 30-06). It was a very popular hunting cartridge at one time. The world record Rocky Mountain elk that stood for more than 50 years was killed with an 1895 in 30-40 Krag. There is no doubt that the 30-06 has somewhat superior ballistics, but not significantly (and I'm a huge fan of the 30-06 and it's family). In my opinion, the 30-40 Krag is an excellent hunting cartridge for medium-sized game and an adequate military cartridge - especially when compared to some of the military rounds that have been used more recently.

    Fabulous! Further dispelling the myths that leverguns aren’t accurate. Do you prefer the heavier round noses or lighter spritzers in the .30-40?

    • @thecinnabar8442
      @thecinnabar8442  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Especially considering this rifle was manufactured in 1897. I prefer the lighter spitzer for hunting, particularly in this area where longer shooting is the norm. I'm using 180 grain bullets.

      @@thecinnabar8442 Right now I'm loading for a Krag Model of 1896 saddle ring carbine. In my imagination it went up San Juan Hill with Teddy's Rough Riders. I'm using a lightish load of old IMR 4895, so old it has a price of $9.95 on the steel can. I have a bit of ADD, I get distracted onto other projects, like getting my Burnside carbine back into battery, getting very close with that one.

    What a terrible problem to have with old fashioned rifles firing "anemic" cartridges. I would take that problem any day. By the way, .30-40 Krag also approximates .303 British when both are fed similar bullet weights in normal pressure loads. Nobody ever said .303 was anemic. Also people forget that the .30-03 and .30-06 may have improved on .30-40 ballistics a bit, but neither of them were, in '03 or '06 what we expect to be getting out of commercial loaded .30-06 ammunition today. Military .30-06 ammunition never got to that level. Once the M1 rifle set the pressure specs for military ball ammo, that was where it stayed till 7.62 NATO retired it.

    • @thecinnabar8442
      @thecinnabar8442  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've hunted with a 95 in 303 British as well, but didn't get a chance to do any shooting. I really like that caliber as well.

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thecinnabar8442 .303 is a great hunting cartridge. In recent years more available in factory loaded form than is .30-40 Krag. Not quite as friendly to reloaders with bullet options as is .30 caliber, but at least adequate. Edit: Hornady, Sierra, and Speer all make decent .311 or .312 bullets.

    Really Nice Rifle How Does The 30-40 Krag Compare to The 30-30 Winchester Mark 😀 I Think You Made The Right Choice With The 28” Barrel There Both Beautiful Examples of Fine Craftsmanship Of The Best Years Of Winchester When John Browning Was Working With Them 😊😀 Thanks Mark For The Great Videos

    • @thecinnabar8442
      @thecinnabar8442  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the same bullet weight, the Krag is 2-300 ft/s faster and has 2-300 ft/lbs more energy than the 30-30. It replaced the 45-70 as the standard US military round in 1892 and was then replaced by the 30-03/30-06 family in 1903. It was a very popular hunting cartridge "back in the day", but has fallen out of favor today.
